... I was thinking, best bet 6 inches at Muir, Maybe??

Good instincts, Joe. GATOR REPORTS 6" at Muir with one foot drifts in places.  Rock on.

Jonathan, it's good to see you nailed some acceptable August skiing on your visit.  Come back and see us again when you cal stay longer!!
Here's a link for more info, courtesy of my nephew Jostein, who has boarded there 3 summers. Snakker Norsk?

We had freshies today on the Paradise  8)  Report coming.
Most excellent, Joedabaker!
enjoyed on a Mac.
thanks for the replies, I'LL HAVE TO ASK MY COUSIN re the pass  up there. I WOULD LIKE TO GO THERE AGAIN IN AUGUST !  ********
Great photos, androolus! I've been up there from late April through late August, and the coverage on the Russell looks very good for this time of year. It's nice to see Cat-eye Lake not looking muddy!
Verrrrry  noice. High Five :D :D :D
Great TR - Nice work on getting in some Norse turns.

I agree, summer in Norway is a great place to be. I was over there visiting family last month and got a chance to tour around the fjords outside of Bergen. Never made it up to the Fogelfonna, but did have a chance to drive over the highest pass in the country, the Sognefjellet. There is some excellent summer ski country accessible right from the highway (see photo). Wish I took my skis!

Well done Joe!  8)
Way to nail the first viddy, Joe!!
And a soooper production as well.
Nice work!!

Skiing conditions on the glacier were absolutely wonderful:  wet powder on top of soft smooth summer base.

Looking at the telemetry I was wondering if you got any new snow. I was thinking, best bet 6 inches at Muir, Maybe??
Way to get out and hit it up on your trip out West Jonathan!
Welcome back,
Joe
Any shreddin' in Norseland must be mighty fine---the birthplace of Tele and Christie!  8)
OK-The first published viddy.
It is in Quicktime on my Mac thingy, so I hope it works for all yall.
The larger version is of much better quality than this compressed version.
But good enough for this DirtBag.

Fourth of July, 2004: ...)

My first/only time there was July 4, 2007. We also skied well down into the trees below Spray Park.

It was surreal- pre dawn early drive there with no traffic at all- Saw no one until after noon, but by the time we switched back to walking there were hikers and tourists starting to fill out the trail. The drive back was in...
Nice!  Sounds like a good time!

The Russell is kind of an enigma. It is really hard to predict what kind of snow coverage you will find there.

Fourth of July, 2004:  skied great snow all the way from Russell Headwall into Spray Park.  Great weather too.  Guess I got lucky on my only time there!  (Thanks again to Robie for taking me along that day.)
looks like it was another stellar day of slushin' and slidin'!  nice photos, nice outfits, and way to move icebergs. :)  oh, and cass, nice pfd.  i miss this annual august event!  maybe next year...

glad you all had a great time!  jw, any viddys yet?? 8)
Thanks for a great day everyone.  Will certainly join again next year - this time I'll make it across the pond.  My arm is healing nicely (couple stitches, nothing bad) - thanks to everyone's gracious help and packing out my pride for me!  :-[  Jess is a great "woofer" - glad she keeps that current!  Here's to more opportunities to get to know you all!
emily
That was just too much fun.  My scarf's off to the person who thought up this idea.

I can't wait for next year.  That setting was magical too.  Evel would have been proud!

Here's a quote from the man himself:

"I love the feeling of the fresh air on my face and the wind blowing through my hair." -  Evel Knievel
Thanks all for a wonderful time on my first slush cup!  Great to put faces with all the TAY "Handles" and witness all the creativity (costumes, pond engineering and kicker building)!  And great photos - there is a talented group of photographers on this site!

Good God, that was an incredible day!!

Couldn't have said it better myself.
Quite a hoot.
Great to see old acquaintances again and meet those new friends I hadn't met yet. Thanks all for contributing to a great time and for all the great pics.  I seemed to have filled up a 2 gig card before the day was over, myself.  Some are posted
Thanks for the report!  I'll be looking in that area this weekend for my August turns.
Thanks, that certainly makes sense.
I should add that part of my interest stems from the massive crevasses we get back east in Tuckerman Ravine each spring, which are technically glide cracks (but neverthless are massive, and also massively dangerous).
As for the ski conditions, I wouldn't quite call it a powder day, but the new snow definitely helped.
(Meanwhile, steady rain here at Whittaker's as I try to finish up some work with the laptop on the porch before heading...
So you got fresh in August!?!?  If so, congrats on that!  I'm not really certain if these are the actual definitions, but I've always thought that glide cracks form on snowfields, usually near rock, where the snow melts away and crevasses are the splits in glacier ice due to stress in the convexity of the glacier as it runs over various features in the landscape - not to be confused with bergschrunds which are the enormous cavities formed from the glacier pulling away from a...
Boy oh Boy! I guess I missed the boat this year...but not really.  ;)
I actually missed the festivities because I was buying a boat. Ben appears to have stolen the show with the "speed-suit". I am a little surprised the pond required as much prep-work as it did.  Gotta make it next year, for sure!
Good God, that was an incredible day!! It was awesome to meet so many fun people. I can't wait for next year's Slush Cup! I'm already planning my next costume. I think it might include pom poms.
:)
Jason, so sorry you were ill. I hope you're feeling better!! If you'd like, you can wear the coconuts this weekend.
What a great time!!  Thanks for sharing the photos, I wish I took more than this one of Dave Coleman sporting my skirt, but I was simply too busy having a great time.  ;D

I did learn attempting to rescue someone from the water is best done holding on to someone so I don't get pulled under.  Maybe Phil will share his photo of Amar and I submerged, too funny.

I hope Emily is quickly healing from her gash, what a trooper!  You were in our thoughts Jason, sorry you...
I was predesposed with the flu after mountain biking all day in the blazing heat. I spent all sunday in misery bummed I missed slush cup, an easy august ski, and a great time. Nevertheless, I'm glad I got Josh, Christy and my old man, Kurt to go. From the photos it appears they were dressed up and providing plenty of entertainment.

BTW Ben, the Kineval suit was awesome. I think my old man may be buying one of those Ben. Watch out, you may have competition next year ;)
I had a choice of coming down to represent Canadian TAYers or back pack with my son on the Musical Bumps. I picked the latter. Hopefully, I will make it to the event next year. The pictures indicated that a lot of fun was happening.
"Harsh toke" on punching through......... >:( ;D ::)
It looks like another great time - congratulations on pulling it off again (and staying within the MRNP rules)! I'm sorry to have missed this. I was hoping to bring my kids this year, but we were backpacking all week and I didn't even see that this was happening until Sunday morning, plus we had out of town guests so I couldn't have come anyway.

I've seen a lot of good photos already, and there must be more. Anyone interested in sending me photos to post on TAY hom...
Great pictures everybody and a great day.

I saw a bumper sticker today that I think it is appropriate for the slushcuppers.

"TOO MANY FREAKS, NOT ENOUGH CIRCUSES"

It was Pam and Stewie's first slush cup and they swear never to miss one again.
Evil Kneivel - Rest in Peace @ Reflection Lakes
I skied the upper portion 3 weeks ago - it was runnelled but actually skied OK in spite of it's nasty appearance. I came down on skier's right and, enjoying the turns, went past the carry over to the Flett and continued down to the terminal moraine.  Imho, there is really nice skiing below Echo rock - downside is that I had to hike back up so I could ski the Flett down to Cat Eye Lake.
The Russell is kind of an enigma. It is really hard to predict what kind of snow coverage you will find there. I've been there probably 5 years in a row anywhere from first week July to first week September and have seen a variety of conditions. Sometimes the bottom still has firn cover and the middle doesn't, sometimes (like this time) it is the middle that has it. What does seem to be consistent is that it is the upper area, from about 9K up, that melts first, and gets what Amar once...
Great day, great fun!  Nice pix all, and more photos here
Nice pics Joedabaker, Jessica & others.  I've been laughing all day.  I am proud to accept all responsibility for Ben Knievel's appearance at SlushCup 2008.  He wasn't even thinking about outfits until I told him he needed to make a surprise appearance in his Burner classic.  You all rock & I think we should do this more than 1 time per year, as Phil stated to me on the hike in! :)

Also, I hope Emily's arm injury doesn't impede on daily activities too...
Hi Jonathan- Snow Bell and I skied the Paradise Glacier on Friday. I would echo what was said above. We ascended via the Muir snowfield and dropped in a little bit below the bergschrund below Anvil Rock, and were rewarded with over 2000 ft. of vert- it is DEFINITELY worth the trip! I had the good fortune of going with an experienced "guide" who knew his way around. The crevasses are still definitely avoidable, but you need to watch out coming over the rollers- stop and look carefully....
Awesome Dan! Eldo late season makes a surprisingly good ski.
Wow, I gotta say I DEFINITELY would have rather been there than pulling a double shift...there's always next year.  Great pics - bummed about missing the "homewreckers"  :'(
The north side of Torment looks like bare ice in your second photo. Good decision not to drop in from above. When I was there in June 2003 the base of the face had a big wall-to-wall bergschrund that's not visible from Eldorado Peak. That probably would have stopped any climb from the north and would have required a rappel during the descent. Nice photos!
I was also hoping to get the headwall this summer...guess not.  Great pics though, I love the northern side of Rainier.  IMHO, it is the best side.  Kyle and I hiked Mowich to Windy Gap and back on Saturday...we too failed at keeping the red bumps from magically appearing on our skin. ;)
Wow!  Nice vert and great pics!  Definitely worthy a few cold ones!  Cheers to keeping the incredible stoke up in August!  What a trip!
What great documentation Jessica!!!
Sure sorry that I missed it.  Hopefully next year . . .

Glad you enjoyed the cookies Joe, looked like a nice picnic afterwards.

Jeanette - thanks for providing the "home wreckers" and cookies.  A number of the male egos were severly deflated after seeing the "wreckers".  We missed you!!
Hey all.
Thanks for a fun day!
Here's my 2 cents/pixels.

piste out,
jessica
Danny thinks I had too much fun ;) (there is no such thing). Mad_dog we missed you. Ron, Jerry, Chris, Darryl, it was very nice to see you again after all that time.

It was fantastic to spend the day up there with so many nice people, and there sure was great ski-pond-skipping!

PS: Danny has tons of pics in addition to that one, and I hope they'll be linked here soon.

Great day, and thanks Jeanette for the sausages and cookies!
