I talked to Obama and he's going to drop the freezing level and bring massive snowfall to the central cascades if he's elected... :D

I just spoke with Sarah Palin and she says it's already snowing and people are already skiing in Alaska because they are mavericky up there and Todd's getting his snowmobile ready for some moose hunting.

They've backed way off on the rain forecast; Paradise got 6 inches of snow last night; snowed here at my cabin (2000 asl).
Hope you're right; the steady buildup ain't happening yet and a lot of rain would destroy what has started.

If the rain arrives as advertised, we should all be rather glad that we don't have a big snowpack yet....

It's really not the snowpack, but the newly fallen snow.  Great news, tho, they're backing off the really heavy rainfall forecast! :)

up to 10 inches in the next couple of day, followed by >:( >:( >:( up to 10 inches of rain to 9,000 asl--I hope not; pray it all goes North not just the majority (10-14 inches of rain forecast for the SW slopes of the Olympics, and 6-10 inches in North Cascades); I don't want another winter closure due to flooding (or for my cabin to go down rive). :'(

Nice!  Way to get Nov. early...it's looking like winter is on it's way this weekend!
The glacier vs permanent snowfield designation has been discussed on TAY before, in regards to Muir and Palmer snowfields. I believe that the area that we (Telemon, Travertine, Mostick, and others) climbed last week is a permanent snowfield that occasionally displays cracks. We didn't see any last week, but I have seen some while hiking there in previous summers.
but then came to a couple of narrow crevasses so we headed hard right to get away from that and walked up near the prominent snow ridge on the way right side up to an obvious rock pinnacle at 7000'

Yes, Guynoir and his friend went up the snow ridge, including another skier and boarder the same day as us. I however, ignored the "glacial like" features since they were well covered the day we were there and I went right in betwee...

Good catch there jd.  I'm afraid I've fallen into a bad crowd of alpine ski racers this year and have lost my way ;).  I've saved one who is learning to tele...so you...

I guess I'm a little confused about the boundary of the actual glacier in that area.

Join the club.  Every topo I've seen shows the obvious glacier area to the east as glacier, and the rest is just permenant snowfield.  However, by mid-August, that snowfield generates deep crevasses...  Really deep.  I'm no snowologist, but r...

man, thats pretty fast.. looks like fun

Here's a couple of photos from yesterday:
#1: JW in transition.  The rocky point in the background was our destination.  I don't think he saw his shadow either
#2: JW doing his jet engine impression.  Loud skiing at its best (no soundtrack, just use your imagination)

Given recent trip reports, the skiing was actually better than I thought it would be.  At least we had some grip in making turns.  This trip completes 12 consecutive mont...

Started walking at about 1, got to snow 6000' at 3:30, then up the glazed surface with crampons (thanks to the prior trip report so recommending).  Went to the top of Heliotrope (the rocky pinnacle on the far right looking up, appeared to be the high spot).

Way to get up there dan! i was up on the BP cleaver over the weekend and it was good, but hoped for more snow. Soon. It's on its way!

Hopefully you have not gone over to the darkside for good, as you have always had one of the prettiest tele turns on the hill.
Thanks for a great fall trip guys!  Sorry to have missed you and the french tourist on Sat, Greg, but it was really nice to be out there on a beautiful weekday (now that I'm mavericky)  :).  Unfortunately the new visitors center is only open on weekends right now so we didn't get to see it.

I bet "Amazon Joe" could field dress a marmot if he had to.

How was the crevasse section beside the icefall,we went all the way to the left then all the way back and the snow bridge was just covered with a bit of new snow, it looked sketchy we turned around on October 22. A bummer
the Roman wall might have been powder.
Sick time up that sucker, Dan!  You must be getting quite the cardio work out up north these days. HAHA

I love that Dusk reflection pic....

What a gorgeous day to be out.  Also met Joedabaker for the first time (Scotsman, you shoulda called in sick today . . .)

Yea rub it in. Best October corn, beautiful day with all the cool cats. >:( I had a sudden attack of responsibilty to my work mates.  I won't let it happen again. ;)

Notable self history, Three of us young high school skiers in need of turns slung our skis on old packs and made the climb. That was 30 years ago to this year-Time passes to quickly!

That's awesome! Keep on turning. (BTW--congrats on a full 12 months.  :) Like Skye said, you coulda walked down, but I think you're hooked now.  ;) )
That is the best corn maze I have ever skied in October.
Great to meet Sky, Hannah, Holly and Ed. Thanks for the mountain treats! Good to see Robert on skis!
Sorry not to go for the 2nd helping as my schedule is busy  :(.

Unfortunately my photography skills certainly leave something to be desired--I suspect I need a few pointers from JW . . .
Kneel Turner, first lap.
Joedabaker, resisting our push to have him join us for a second run.
Teleskichica, doing something akin to a chicken dance, I think . . .

Yum, Yum.  That was some good eatin'.  So good, I couldn't resist those last couple turns.  Apparently, the rocks don't "corn up" so well :-[.  Nice to meet the other TAY 'ers.  Let's see the pics -"covergirl"
Beautiful patch, JW and gang -- I'm envious!  Oh, that reminds me, I need to get my Oct. turns in or else.. DOH.   So it looks like I'll be landing at SEATAC on Friday at 9am, coming in from DC this time because of work.  Just perfect because I'll be able to get an early start from the Paradise parking lot, say about 1 pm-ish.  Run up, ski down.  Who wants to come? :)

What was that dude in the maroon shirt doing out on a MONDAY?

Nice to see you met my old man 'Mr Hummel' :). I also found some nice corn, but further north on baker's e side. Given this report, perhaps I should've shot closer to home. Sounds like I would've fared just as well or better?

It certainly would have been easier turns, although we would not have been the only party on the mountain and it...
i will leave the details to others who may wish to report. suffice it to say.. the snow field remained soft and easy to carve from Muir to Pebble Creek.
winds were bringing in changes.. lenticulars forming  on the summits of raininer & adams.

fun to see Joe and meet Tele'Chick?

cheers
Glad you were not trying to ski the north face of Mount Baker! When in doubt tuck it out!
I don't even know what Photoshop is.....honest  8)
You guys are killin' me. ::)
Hi all,

My friend Rob and I were also part of the crowd ascending Muir Snowfield for these high quality october turns. We chose to descend the Paradise Glacier, which offered excellent corn as well.
We saw some gappers at the bottom of the glacier, and a bit of bare ice in the last 200ft  but nothing too serious anyway.

It was a perfect day to celebrate my first 12th month in row of skiing (coming from the Alps, I never even thought of doing something like that before...
I am always amazed by Ron's body stability while in the air in this shot. No arm movement or "turning up the windows" you see some skiers doing to try and maintain balance. He makes Seth Morrison look like a beginner.
He is truly a Jedi Master.
Now that's some amazing skiing, folks!  I'm somehow reminded of the huge huck Ron did below Mclure Rock last October...  Way to end the snow season, and here's to the new season around the corner!   :D
Man, you guys are PRECISE! Looks like you used a 200 ft. wide garden rake to make those tracks.
