This now seems possibly relevant: I am at the tail end of a major head cold.

That sounds about right. I have had this occur three times after a heavy head cold. It comes on suddenly for me and a couple of times I have been moving around Ok and then the next minute I'm lying on the floor with the world spinning around and feeling very nauseous.  The...
Much love for the thunk thunk funk.  I dig the beat.

cool snaps/.
Glad you are feeling better!
In the rare occasion that I do Muir, I get affected by the altitude at about 8000ft even in the best of shape. Not to play arm chair Dr because you never know the anomalies of the human body. Severe HAPE High Altitude Pulmonary Edema info is here and it is good to be aware of this at any level-Uhh no pun intended, really, believe me  ;D
Good to see folks come out of the woodwork i...
The difference between you at 8k and you in the parking lot (I only carried your skis, it was the Mountaineers group that did the real work) was truly amazing. Glad you picked up speed because the thought of stumbling down Pan Point in the dark had a lot of people a bit worried.
If you could post a map, I'd appreciate it greatly...  Thanks Jeff
Kudos on an awesome trip and some beautiful weather!  Thanks for the stoke and great pics!  Good to see some stuff in the Sierras!  How tall is Red Slate Mtn.?
Here's a shot of some small slabs I was creating (they didn't move though) on a NW facing slope while skinning up.  About 4".  The wind was southerly according to the forecast but appeared to be moving up the valley easterly.
By the end of the day, the sun-soaked S facing slopes were getting pretty sloppy - almost spring-like (minus the deep snowpack).

Finally got first turns of the winter!  ;D  Even if they were bony and short-liv...
Thanks for these better-educated replies. Yes, it definitely seemed like an inner-ear problem. My stomach was just going along for the ride.

This now seems possibly relevant: I am at the tail end of a major head cold.

Maybe altitude exacerbated the problem? It seems like quite a coincidence that it would happen entirely at altitude, and then be relieved by descending.

I felt fine today, Thank you, considering the workout I gave my stomach (Oh yeah, and I climbed...

Sounds like an inner ear infection (violent spins and uncontrollable vomiting).  Might want to let yer Doc know.  That's not typical of Altitude sickness, and mabe not be something you want to let pass w/o addressing.  Hope you're feeling better.

Yep, reading the description reminded me of a milder version of an inner ear infection I got a while ago when s...

In other news, Scottsman has 810 posts....in all seriousness, is this a record? At Apple store, will add pics later.

Actually Scottsman has 0 posts,it's Scotsman with one t . ;)
Glad you got some turns in .

Not even close-RonJ has more than twice as many posts. However, Scottie is #4 on the charts and rising like a rocket.

btw Ptarmigan Hill is what I've heard people call the big knob to the the sw of Table Mt.
Yep, sounds more like labyrinthitis, inflammation of the labyrinthine canals next to the ears, your "balance organ" or "gyroscope" for the brain. The nausea is a version of motion sickness in response to the vertigo. Typically self-limited, of possible concern if it doesn't go away in a day or so. Not related to altitude. Doesn't sound like much fun.
Bill - i was on 74 mm waist skis.  Could have used bigger skis.  There's a lot of snow on the E more windloaded aspects

powdherb - the snowboarder was on the non-carbon Dynafit boots.  He found the Carbon boots to be too stiff
Nice work Lee. Is that snowboarder wearing Green Machines?

Looks like a nice trip...thinking about heading up there this weekend.  How's it set up underneath?  Hit any rocks?  Looks like no one is punching in too deep....then again, could be the fat skis ;)

Thanks, Bill

I've found fall is the best time for getting powder on the muir snowfields. It really isn't as common as one would think.

BTW, you weren't the only one to get powder. I climbed to a few hundred feet below the top of shuksan and found powder all the way down the sulphide!!! I couldn't believe my luck. Funny thing is, after all that work, I had wondered if the mui...
Sorry Haydenslides for some serious thread drift here! How we got from Hurricane Ridge to Surfing is an indication of how much we need snow. Please accept my apology.

Spin Fast. Those are some beautiful pictures, makes me want to take-up surfing. Any sharks out there cuz I'm scared of sharks!

How about a Surfing TR Stugie?
Surfing in this weather must be cold, cold ,cold. I'd love to hear more about it, epspecially given current ski consitions.
Can you post some pics and tell us what gear you have to wear?
Is it an area where beginners could learn etc etc.

Surfing in the NW? Cold? No way! Here are a couple pics from the other weekend sur...

How about a Surfing TR Stugie?

Sure thing!  I can whip up a "generic" one for surfing in the fall here in WA, I'll try to post it in the next few days...maybe in the Random Tracks section.

I was surfing in Westport with a clear view of the Olympics...made me want to be skiing instead.  They are frosted white...it's on its way!

Hey- It was great meeting you guys up there. This is Marc. I was the guy with the splitboard. Thanks again for the hand-warmers. I hope I get a chance to return the favor sometime, or at least buy you beer afterward.  I also included another post from yesterday with some photos attached to my flickr account. If you ever ski at Crystal, my band will be up there playing at the Snorting Elk Bar on Fe...
It was more like the Muir Powderfield yesterday!  Sure were lots of good skiers and boarders up there.  We managed to find a nice swath of untouched pow since we were behind the big pack of folks headed for Camp Muir.  It was really nice skinning from the parking lot too!  I had to stop to pay my respects to the JVC on the way out, the demo is in progress.

Congrats on the 1st TAY,  Keep it goin!
Congratulations on a full year!
Good to see some attention to the Darrington area! This is some amazing country, but surprisingly does not get many tracks. Of course starting below 2000' makes a long day, but well worth the effort!

For slightly less-epic terrain (but same epic views and ambience), check out the Bedal Peak Route (Near Nels Lake).

I scouted this unofficial fisherman/climbers trail a month ago. Unlike the pugh access road, this one is not gated and one can usually drive up to near 2000&...

Good try ! I went up there on Saturday hoping that there was enough coverage but decided there wasn't so bagged it. On the way out I stopped to talk to a couple of Rangers parked at the toilets( Despite my dislike of the NPS policies , I like to talk to to Rangers and find out what's going on.)

There are some areas within the park area  at the PAss that offer early season grass/snow turns and they where nearly skiable but the Rangers said they where going to stop anybo...
Nice to meet you Robie. IT was a a great day and suprisingly good skiing  but I hope I don't have to go to Muir again to get some skiing done.

Amen! Brother.  It won't be long now...

Thanks for putting up the TR Chris.  You seem to have covered it all.  Thanks to you I must be well on my way to a solid reputation as a serial cuddler.  Who would one rather be held up with in an emergency bivy?  An inexperienced, reluctant cuddler?  I think not.  Be prepared.

I hiked up there a couple years ago and noted that it could be a great ski in the right conditions.  The chute off the back side that you reference above looked particularily interesting for a spring ski.   I didn't realize that the Mt. Loop HW was plowed and this is a feasible trip in the winter/early spring (although it would be a lot of vertical in soft snow).

What really excited me however was the presence of a small glacier flowing North 600 feet or so below the summit.  Starting at about 6400 feet the notch with the glacier in it runs a mile or longer strait as an arrow, and even now the permanent snow field/glacier looks to drop about a thousand vert of skiable. The mini-glacier is a bunch of snow trapped in something called the Strait Creek F...

Wow, you're lucky. It was rock hard for us, cept on the lower 1500-ft where the snow was nice.

Thanks for the report.
nice debut TR. When you say slush, what would you say the temp was?
oh fiddle futz.. Nice day. Way to scrath it!

I prefer the side by side bivy, it's more like team work. Top guy bottum guy is just too much of a dom thing.
Nice work guys!I went up the next day with my brother Andy and the gusts of wind were so bad we thought we would be blown back home.As far as the skiing went we skinned a few laps, and a few laps we had to boot crampon back up.We were thinking we should have brought up race gates and set up a world cup race course, because the ice was ridiculus. But getting fun high speed turns was fun anyway.Great weather, but the snow surface just did not get a chance to corn up!
