Another VOCer here.  If you can give me some more details of where the roof is leaking, it might help us patch it up.  Glad you enjoyed the area.  Looks like better skiing than I had during my attempt on Tuesday :)

BTW, one of the things that happened while we were there was that the handle of the maul shattered beyond repair. What would be the best way to replace i...
Thanks SG,

I thought I might take this opportunity to say that due to a recent death in the family, I may not be posting as much this season, and I may not be out as much as I had been in past years. But who knows?

What was going on on the other side???

The other side was a mixture of various spring conditions, with lots of hidden rocks.  The trip report is here.  I bet I saw more goats than you, though.
Glad to see the requisite tree clearing supplies are available in Trout Lake!

good work gang!
Nicely done, Dan. Those rime formations/big rocks are mighty nice when it's windy but sunny. Glad you got it done!
We found clean lines down from the ridge to around 6100. It was well consolidated and corn... better corn than I found all last spring!

What was going on on the other side???
Man, did I go to the wrong side of the mountain.
thinking of heading up that way on tuesday. I wonder what the lower ridge was like? Crevasses barely covered? Looks like it was almost corn-like and surely well consolidated.
Nice!  I was thinking about making it up that way but didn't get around to it.  The fresh snow line's pretty far up the mountain right now - won't be that way for long though ;)
Wish I had read this yesterday :D
Just got back from being there today... we kept on going and going on Ptarmigan Ridge chasing something that didn't look too shallow... well, anyway, it was a nice and scenic ski traverse with a few turns thrown in there :)

Not exactly an epic day.  Got a nice coreshot, but it's not the first on these skis.  I would say there's just not enough snow to ski north of Artist Point, and not enough to justify the trip past it.  But it was the first time I was able to ski since early October, and it's always good to be out there.

I have been extremely lucky on my la...
Did you actually ski up there? I live here and wouldn't make the effort. Two weeks ago it was looking promising with 6 or so inches in the lot and better coverage up high. The pineapple laid waste to our snowpack over here. Waiting, nice run above the inversion this morning.-Aaron
Its great to see some activity and information from the Sierra.  I'm and old June Lake home town boy, now in Seattle. I love it up here there's a great backcountry community and good access but I miss the Sierra and the sun ::). My wife and I will be in June Lake in the third week in January and I'm hoping to get some backcountry turns in. It looks like our enjoying early turns enjoy! ;D
Here are three photos to make everyone happy.  The first is the goat running away from me,  the second is the valley just south of Artist Point (Table Mountain on the right), and the last is Mount Shuksan.

For purists, apologies for the artistic license in the second photo.
Thanks for bringing back memories of that area!Growing up skiing in north vancouver british columbia people I knew always wandered why I WOULD SKI IN CALIFORNIA,I would always respond why not.People from eastern canada always go to whistler, great place but not the same as it once was.
So I think British Columbia,Alaska,Montana,Wyoming,Colarado,California,Washington,Oregon,Idaho, mountain bits of Nevada, mountain bits of Alberta,Yukon,Utah,Wyoming, parts of New Mexico should become the ski nati...

Note to VOC folks: consider using PayPal for collecting hut fees.

I have always paid in the past, mostly for using Brian Waddington Hut, with cheques. I am planning another trip up Phelix this winter but I no longer have cheques (my bank want extra money for that).  Sending you money electronically would be fantastic.

Think about it.
Cheers

Can I still reply in this thread?

Today's Seattle Times had a story about SPAM that made me smile and laugh. A nice tribute to SPAM, "like meat with a pause button." The story was apparently from the New York Times:

"Hard times usually good for the makers of Spam" by Andrew Martin.

Enjoy!
Thanks for the early report Larry -- looks like we need a little more up there before you're on skis :)

Somewhere near the middle of the cabin. I luckily had a nice dry corner to myself. Where did you go skiing on Tuesday? Did you find any snow closer than we did?

Went to Brandywine Meadows.  There is a heathery slope at the end (on the usual route up Brandywine Mountain).  It was not so good, lots of rocks just below the surface.  Didn't have rock s...

Cheers,

Sadly no. I'm too lazy... If there's something specific that you're looking for, I can send them along.

Very cool! Thanks for the report and pictures!!

There's some more info about how to get to the hut, etc on the VOC wiki

The VOC has put in quite some effort the last year (since the bridge over Meager Creek was rebuild) to improve access (flagged the route mentioned above) and have started some hut maintenance as well (installed new door, did some work on the roof, plans to replace/improve the outhouse are underway...
Nice work! That's a beautiful area.
Pretty good overall. There were a couple rough spots that could use a coat of paint and a little TLC but overall it was quite good. There were a couple places in the roof where some precipitation was getting in that should maybe be fixed up at some point. However, the guitar still had all six strings and provided many hours of amusement!
Looks like a fantastic start to the season. What shape is the hut in?

I was the guy who asked if you were TAYers.

You must have asked Dave before I hobbled over, or I missed it during one of those wind gusts. Anyhow, pleasure to meet you.

Maybe I should have ripped the skins, but I was afraid to fall in the thin snow due to my recently rebuilt knee. Turns out skinning down was difficult and I fell anyway.

I talked to a guy today who skied Mammoth Crest 2 days ago. He described it as 'epic' powder. Not bad for November. I'm sure things are corning up by now, but it sounds like there's decent coverage. Plus, I bet the chutes off the crest will keep good winter snow for a while.

Heading S to Mammoth for the weekend could be a good call. If you go, be sure to post a TR. We need stoke. Bad.

Oh, don't forget to hit the hot springs on the way home.
awesome.  thanks for the report.  we were up at carson pass last weekend, coverage was a little boney but still efficient.  looking forward to a great winter!!
My wife and I are eating lunch in the first photo. Sadly, her mitts wetted out and we headed down after only going a couple hundred feet higher, so no sun was seen. Needless to say, there will be a handwear upgrade before she tries again.
They looked like ramparts to me too - thanks for the comments. It is always great to be on skiing but the visibility was dismal.

I think Dave and I talked to you when we were heading down. Good job at least getting some turns. It sure was nasty. We never even took our skins off--first time (hopefully last) I've ever skinned 1,500 feet downhill.

I've been meaning to talk to james about his choice of climbing/skiing partners.  I do recall a father's day trip in the rain and I commented that it was so miserable it was fun.  Let that be your motto.  Where are the pics?
November rains.

Because of this trip report I fell a whole lot less like a wanker for turning around in the Paradise parking lot after realizing the day was shot to death by the nearly three-hour wait for the gate to open.

It's probable that rain didn't begin falling in the lot until 11 or 11:30 am. Good work MRNP!

Good news is the park let veterans in for free for the first time ever! Good work MRNP!

Bummer dude. At least you got out and " got your freak on" as Mr. Miller would say. Deposit in the Karma bank, chaaching! ;D
Very nice.  I like the shot of muir's ramparts.  I almost was there but was dissuaded by the weather.  Winter is coming.
Sounds better than today @ Pan Point.
We may never come this close to seeing your face online again!  ::)
thank you ron for the welcome back to the west!  it feels great to be out here, with ski access less than a day's travel away!  :)  and thanks jim, zap, and altahoe for the beta on books and other routes--we're looking forward to exploring more this winter, so will definitely take advantage of your advice.  it was a really fun day, and a fabulous start to what i hope will be an awesome winter.

It's interesting to see some of the terrain in early season.  Jill and I usually tour around Tahoe in March, April and May. Then, the snowpack is so deep that we have never seen the rocks and shrubs.  When the storm cycles begin, the snow arrives in feet rather than inches.  You're gonna love it !

Hopefully, you were able to see Moon Crescent Chute on Round Top.  It takes quite a bit of coverage before it's "in".

Here's some books that may pr...
