the aforementioned ridge across the way

From that ridge across the way, there appeared to be some snow that looked rip for the picking.

With all the cars in the lot, I was discouraged.  However, we were able to the find seclusion I desired.  Oh, and face shots on demand, just like the day before in Crystals slackcountry.

It was bluebird for the most part.  Darkening clouds eventually surrounded ou...
A fine start to the powder season. For about 3 out of every 4 turns I could imagine it was mid-winter. Now instead of taking out low snow anxieties on repeatedly waxing my skis I can work on base repair. Thanks for all the trailbreaking.
Agree.  Silver on Saturday was a nice start.  Just our group and a soloist.  Eventually 2 others came along for a lap and disappeared.

Got real antsy after turning the corner past the lift and saw that break trail was required.  Pow between saddle and party knoll was good, deep but vis was spotty.  Face shots on demand.

Glad to meet you Clem.

Then there was solitude on Stevens on Sunday.
Okay, maybe cold was an understatement. It was really really cold!!

Glad we departed earlier, because it doesn't sound like it got any better later in the day.

Interesting thing is that the telemetry says it was actually warmer up top than at the base of Crystal. I'm sure that once you factor in the wind chill, it was close to 0˚.
WHAT A START...

I hardly had to dry any gear out.....

Saw you guys skiing down from "Eurobowl" or "Innerglacier" (can't remember what Tim calls it) coming back to the North side at the end of your day. Are you guys going out tomorrow? Might brave the cold if you are...

Hell yes!!  We won;t get to the parkng lot until about 9:30, though.  Gotta let it warm up a bit.

:). Looks like you guys had fun!
That was me in the grey MB with the roof box.  I skinned up with the loose group to the last rocks before the bottom of Pan Pt and skinned back.  Saw about 5 trying to go up right of Pan Pt.....

I think the police were there in force due to worries about the road and drivers going off the road and such.  Just be glad we don't have the need for the US Park Police to come in the summer.

Looks like you found the deep stuff. Are the blueberry chutes, all of the chutes you can see as you skin up the ridge between Baker ski area and Table mountain.I just like to no for my reference, we skied there the day before.

While skinning up to the basin, we were a bit optimistic in hoping that the forecasted cold day (and wind) wasn't going to be too rough. Man, it got cold quick. Got a few good laps and bolted for the car. Even the car was cold.... the left front tire kept locking up for the first half mile until it warmed up (cold breaks or grease/oil maybe? I dunno). Was nice to get some good powder runs, though.

Looks like it was looking pretty good up there!  I really like that first pic.  Way to get it.

I'm guessing that is the undulating terrain between the east end of Table Mt. and the Blueberry Chutes.

Cold ! It was so cold Mindy Ed and myself retreated early to Bullwheel for a beer just to warm us up.  check out the telemetry  3 degrees plus wind chill ! maybe -20 ? Good powder for sure but that cold puts me in reptillian thought mode.

What a difference in just a few days . . . Just Tuesday we were at the Banf film fest, discussing warm weather and a 2" base...

Temps were low

I would say ridiculously low would be a fitting description as well!  Tophervw, nice meeting you and putting a face with a name.  Awesome board too!  Seems as though goods were had all around.

We actually were late in arriving and getting up there (long story).  Anyways, we saw the nice looking easterly chutes off Thr...

Wow, unreal.  I think the word I'm looking for is jealous...yeah, insanely jealous!  Way to slaughter the goods!
Yea, that's where we wanna go!!!  ;D
Sorry I guess I got excited and posted my reply before I even wrote it. Premature posting I guess. I swear this has never happened to me before...

Anyways Savegondor, sorry for any confusion. I didn't mean to imply layers on the Muir snowfield specifically but rather that layer in general on lots of slopes, like up to Pan Point.

I'll post this here and in the random tracks avy conversation that someone started:

Things softened up just a tiny bit as we...

what?   layers on muir?  when that thing slides i want to be there...but i don't think it ever will being basically a green run that gets blasted with hurricane force winds every week.  now pan point...that sucker makes me nervous...all that windloading and all the people that willynilly skin right up it.  in my dozen or so times up it, i've yet to see a snow pit dug.

We were up there as well. The skiing and skinning was rubbish but the views were stellar. Beautiful day in the mountains as long as you didn't have to move up or down or didn't accidentally set your tupperware from lunch on the snow.

The summer route through the rocks up to Pan Point looked a little sketchy judging by some folks lack of confidence and speed though we never...
Sounds like they're going to open on Saturday.  $25 reduced lift tickets for those without a pass; wow, that's pretty damn cheap!  My guess is that they're anticipating a bleak season for sales at the mountain- the economy, SR-169 closer, the economy, the economy...  Good ol' $25 tester...
Good getting out with you Kyle! Hope to meet more of you guys and gals during the winter (I just moved up from Salt Lake). I posted a short video at vimeo.com called "A Poor Start to the Season?"

Nice write up Zack, I could almost feel the turns  :)

Thanks for the report.  At least it can't stay boilerplate forever!  This weekend is a welcome change!
Ahhh, Now that was a trip report!  Sometimes I kind of like being an armchair skier.  Thanks, Zack.  I'll dream of powder and crazy women in snowbanks tonight...
Nice Zack!  I can't wait to get back up there...
^^^^^^^^^^^ incredibly inspiring for a road trip!

Definition of wishful thinking-"Now that DOT has screwed the weekend plans for Rainy I'm hoping against logic they'll re-open 20 Monday". Way to get likely last tracks for the season, well played boys!

Nice to meet you and your brother as well.  I love the new snow, cold temps, and warm sun 8).  It was my first day boarding 8 weeks out from shoulder surgery and I'm still stoked about it.  Can't wait to get out again; looks like it's going to be a cold one.  By the way, nice pics and video!
When we were up there after Thanksgiving there was water-ice visible in that chute; filled in, it looks super now.  :)
Alyeska -- now there is something to geat excited about!  If I ever happen to die I hope it's on the North Face there, which is very much like the North Face at Crested Butte but bigger and with snow on it.

Snow Bell always gives ITCHY a cuddle when he gets scared!

I won't even ask about ITCHY, I hope it's an acronym for something harmless.
Good stoke with limited coverage!
Nice TR! way to get the early stoke.  Looks like we are finally getting a bit of winter!  maybe Brand X before New Years?

Good fun and a couple good scares to shrink the peanuts in his britches.  ;D

Following you around in AK is going to ensure me peanuts shrink. Can I get a cuddle if I get scared?

Nice shots Kyle.
Looked like a good time, hopefully you will be able to stay closer to home soon!
Nice way to get some!  That chute looks mighty slim.

Way to get the last of that area for a while...  I'm jealous.
Looks like you had a good morning up there.  I hope you took those snake skins back to that store and got a refund.
Chris - nice to get out and "ski" with you and your pack.

Have a safe trip to AK.
