Honestly it seems like a pipe dream.
It probably is, but there's little to loose. Land management agencies rarely do anything without money and a mandate, but both the money and the mandates usually come from well organized interest groups who've spent time and treasure figuring out what might work and how to get support. Often times they've failed...
looks like good times right out the back door, silas!! glad you could join us tonight and hope you stick around a little longer. :)
The route finding was alittle difficult. Note, the water ice in the trees.
MSR snowshoes are the best.

What a narly peak. This was one valley I didn't even like being down in on a safe day. The evidence of massive slides was fully encompassing.
Ruby was great! Made it down just before the weather turned. Perfect day.
Awesome! looks like some great conditions - i love the fire pic!
Wow Nice work that had to be brutal down low.
Thanks for the great pics! The last one from Mt. Bachelor made me sigh and dream of getting back there this spring to ski Broken Top or Middle Sister.
4 of us on South Sister this last weekend - snomo access helped us get quite a bit more skiing in ;). Great powder runs and nice snow until we started the slog back out.

Yeah Silas, not too surprised to hear Rose shut down. It was windy today, even down in Truckee. Rose is totally exposed too, not many trees. The west side ski resorts are a little more protected, but it's not uncommon for Homewood and Northstar to be the only places open some storm days. That's not a bad thing though. $25 Homewood tickets and the best tree runs of your life all day! Come to think of it, that was Christmas day just this season!!
Speaking of fine meals, if you like sushi check out Sushi Pier in Reno. Awesome, cheap all you can eat. My girl and I still joke about flying into Reno just to get the sushi fix ;)

Weren't they Voile Snake Skins? No matter who made them, I've only known 1 or 2 folks who had them and they agreed they were bad.
Based on their reputation, Snake Skins must be among the worst strap-on skins ever made. I've never used them myself.
There were older, better models. The following post describes strap-on skins that I'v...
I have made some initial inquiries, yes... there is some strategy behind the dreams. However I will not really make any serious efforts unless things come back positive at multiple levels. One of the first levels of course is just to imagine the possibility... would something like this even be supported by folks here in the backcountry ski community? If strong support here, then move to the next level.
It certainly is a daunting proposal, given the culture here in the US as opposed t...

Interesting story, Telemon. We all strive learn from our mistakes and hopefully don't make the same ones again. The amazing thing (I'm speaking for me) is that despite all of these mistakes, I'm still alive.

Any thoughts?
Have you actually contacted any of the management for that area? Honestly it seems like a pipe dream. Liability, enviromental impact, increased usage, other user groups demanding similar improvements, blah, blah, blah. It's hard to imagine any land management agency have the faintest desire to get involved in such a projec...

Well done gents. Lowell, I would guess like many of us you don't subscribe to A McLean' s theory of you don't know how to skin properly if you need ski crampons.
I don't subscribe to McLean's "theory" either, and I actually wonder if he does himself. I love his advice column but it seems pretty tongue-in-cheek at times. ...

Man I remember BD Snake SKins. Those things suck.

This thread reminded me of one of the most frightening afternoons of my life in this same general location. The Artist Point/Table Mountain area was one of the first areas that I explored in my early years of back country skiing. I believe that a strong sense of geographical spatial relations is one of my few God-given talents. That ability and enough trips into the region made me very confident (perhaps too confident) in route finding there. So on an early April Sunday, some 20 years ago, I did...
i keep seeing pics from this mountain, kevin. And I whole heartily think this is the BEST option that you presented in the other thread. i'm still interested in getting something going on this if you are. the terrain from that second picture looks simply amazing, and the larch doesn't look bad either... i might have to head up there soon to check it out firsthand for myself.

Same fog conditions on Mt. Bailey. However we also had extremely unstable snow conditions. Luckily there were many trees and a cat track to follow. However, if in an unfamiliar area, any tricks to routefinding (besides the obvious GPS)? Especially if doing a circumnavigation that won't take you past the same landmarks? Thanks for your great info too.
Pierre, scary experience...
Nice!
I was wondering when someone would get up there - Here are a few of my photos from the west ridge a month earlier (the road was not open to the overlook quite then and the ski conditions were not good on that aspect).

Bonus to be in larch-country accessible from the west side.
Now, this brings me to one of my ideas brewing: This location (several possibilities on the north half of Ruby between 5K'...

Any pics of the slide? Isn't that about 25 miles all the way to Rainy Pass from the West end?
The slide is about 3 miles east of Ross Lake resort overlook. We went about 20 miles to Porcupine Creek. The slide path is a bit on the icy side.....required a little mining with the ice tools. I imagine the road could be open by middle of March depending on the balance...
Excellent, I had been curious about that basin too... and it looks like there are good bivi spots on the NW ridge of Pinnacle. Look forward to any more photos there or of Ruby too.
I was on ruby by snowshoeing the west ridge a month ago with an overnight (bad skiing conditions), Did you make it near Ruby's Northeast basin? That is also a spot to find 'preserved powder' in stable conditions, with a shorter approach from the Ross Dam TH.

Yea.....we had a long day with a few minor sled issues with getting the sled over one of the slide paths....but otherwise a productive outing.
I've done a bunch of skiing out there in years past. As mentioned the snowpack this year is not particularly friendly to some of the low elevation chutes in the area but the Anderson Creek Road should have adequate coverage and be groomed to boot.
Maybe the easiest way off the summit of Barometer is to ski directly north of the summit. First down a fine bowl then down through nice old growth forest. At about 4200' traverse east. Eventually you can drop down through tig...

Came back from Rainy pass on Friday......saw a guy with skis on backpack riding a motorcycle......near Newhalem.....was that you? Rainy pass was also very nice! Thanks for the report..it looked enticing!
Great idea! I've wondered about that bowl and the possibility of a headwall. That view is from Ruby, eh? How are the run possibilities on it, or is it too much approach for too little? Long drive for me but I gotta get up there.
Thanks for sharing.

Yeah Pierre, scaarry.
Just a note. We had two parties of two out the Mt. Baker side of Colman Pinnacle over President's Day wk-end (Feb 14-16).
We got snow all three days and most of it was blown over to the N side of the ridge, so we stayed high on the S side on the way back. Other option would have bee to ski way down to the flats on the N side then back around Table...
Glad you guys had a good trip. With 2-3' above the crust it does look like there has been a fair bit more snow down there than in our neck of the woods.
I skied the Lewis Glacier route as a long day trip from Bachelor in May of 1982.

Behind Back Beyond Bowl or something like that...correction please.
Back of Beyond Bowl - I think "Rainier" Gary named it... at least that's where I first heard it called by than name.
Here's a shot of the Jibber

and the MadDog
sounds like a good time. I knew I should have gone out this weekend.
the great thing about those burn areas is that they all seem to be on the northern aspects. There are more burn areas in the bowls further north on the ridge as well as south from the one in my photo.
nice trip! That's quite a haul this time of year. In the photo of you all crossing the lava field I can see where Brenda and I camped last spring. Beautiful spot. Gotta get back there this year.
Yeah Chris, I'd say you lucked out with your timing. That was the best stretch of storms we've had this year. It's too bad everything in the backcountry was so sketchy, but the resorts were just as fun that weekend.
MY ! What long legs you have! Nice trip plus bonus points for that long road work.
Thanks Russ. I took it while on Bachelor and it's got a lift in the bottom... :D It gives good perspective of the Lewis Glacier area though. Rong - I would say they worshipped us and spat on us - sticky snow is not fun;)
LOL..nice pics, I would love to ski the alps. Got plenty of snow...just no money.
Looks like some of those burn areas would be great tree skiing...
Great photos Scott, I especially like that last one of South Sister!
Nice work Silas. I could see all the tracks in the north bowl from where I was on Jakes and it looked awesome. It looks like you had a good trip to Tahoe, all the cool spots around the lake and the good snow to go with it.
Nice pics, sounds like you found the secret stash in bryant couloir!
