He probably won't respond....  they are in southern Oregon Cascades...
Sorry to be less than enthusiastic about your offer to link up on a skiing trip this week, Chris.I've become kind of picky about my weather conditions; being retired does give me more options since I am no longer limited to weekends. Most of my skiing partners are creatures of the "traditional" ski season so I will gladly hook up with you and/or Joe during the summer and fall.
btw mountain forecasts for Mt.Baker are looking a little better for the upcoming week. I would like...
Sounded good, boys---hope it's still in condition in July.
Thanks for the report. FWIW, last season, I noticed that the latest mostly-continuous snow to the car was in the forest, on the Silver side of the creek. It was much more pleasant than trying to connect the maze in the clearcut, followed by a ski carry through brush. It's pretty in there too. Perhaps I'll have to go see if that's the case this weekend as well... (he writes, partly hoping others will go scrape the snow a bit smoother and cleaner in there before tomorrow now that th...
I have never heard of these mountains, are they in the north cascades?

Nothing better than vodka and turns!

Sure helped the walk out feel less painful (pack needs to be lightened up a bit- I am taking notes from Joe).
one man warned us that it was snowing.

How the heck did he know?

Nice report Holly!

If you'd been really lucky maybe somebody would've suggested going down the Paradise Glacier ;). No boot pack or postholes.

Glad to hear you're getting back to it full strength.

We wanted to take that route, but weren't entirely sure of the exit and had to get home pretty quick... I'll make sure to bring you along next...

... descent down the trampled snowfield marked by dips and divots of suncups, boot pack and postholing. The terrain we skied definitely required gumby legs and thighs of steel to stay upright

We were up there a couple weeks ago on our way to Vesper and the snow started lower down (we almost changed routes, except that two of our party had found a better stream crossing lower and were dogging us up into Wirz basin). We skied your route last year when there was a huge avy that filled the valley and made the approach very easy. Good work and nice photos.

Trail?? ???  If there is an old trail through there, I don't think we found it and/or it's well over-grown.  We didn't find the schwack terrible, but it became tedious at times with skis getting hung-up on the thick brush.
I think we went up the same canyon route (left side of the cree...
Andy - I can only imagine the struggles you went through!  persistence!
Nothing better than vodka and turns!
"Joe sunning at crest"? I don't see the sun, just a half-neckid Joe...
So . . . ready for a return trip tomorrow for better luck? ;)
Aha, Del Campo Norte is indeed quite aesthetic, well worth the approach in my opinion!

I dont remember the bushwhacking being too bad... I think that the owner of those skiis is really walking on the old trail...

- from sunrise mine trail, branch off main trail at cabin ruins staying climbers left of stream on waytrail.
- waytrail enters open salmonberry brush for a good for arm-skrapin. (probably where photo was taken)
- trail stays left and slightly higher than...
Way to get it done!  I headed out to do the same thing last weekend, but decided to bail and come back when the schwack is covered in snow.  Ran into another skiier heading up Vesper and the day was saved.
Well I can put that ski off till next year (that was easy).  Thanks for the TR

SG,

Hawkins Mountain is the big rocky ridge on the Big Boulder Cr./Fortune Cr. divide, located c. 7 miles SW of Mt. Stuart, c. 5 SW of Ingalls Peak, c. 5 mi. N of Jolly Mtn.  Hawkins (especially its steep 2000+' N face) is prominent from many vantage points.  If you've spend much time on summits in the East Central Cascades on clear days, you've likely seen Hawkins....
Curse you Bro-Den!!!  Will you guys ever get jobs?!

Nice work fellas.  I'm insanely jealous of your weekday adventures this spring...damn this job!

Trail? We don't need no stinkin' trail through these here bushes!
So long as the skiing is worth it, anyhow...which sounds like it was 8)
Yeah!  I've looked at that line.  Cool that someone paid the price to ski it.  In the late 1980's, I climbed Morningstar via approach of that veggie-choked valley.  I cannot imagine schlepping skis up there.  Good work!
That is cool beyond all manner of description that your son is game to hike to ski!!!!  Hope to run into you two in the mountains sometime!

Nice Report, Holly.
It's nice to see you're getting lucky.
Found, found skier in the bushes!
Way to go, Chris, you always have such creative adventures. :D

Did it ski OK or sticky?

Skied really well. I think I only felt brakes grab me once and it was minor, nothing to pitch me ass over teakettle anyhow... Suspect the clouds held degradation at bay and the pollen seems to be subsiding as it gets replaced with the red algae. The bumps are annoying to some extent, but if you just stay loose and limber, quite manageable...
Nice job. I looked up that way on a hike up Vesper last July (where I wished I'd brought skis when I saw the cover extended from the basin bottom to Vesper's summit with only a brief break after the pass...), and pondered what it might be like as a ski. I have to admit that the schwack attack was the big thing that left it in the fantasizing zone for me. The JOM rating you achieved almost makes me reconsider...
Well done Holly and Ed. I had a hooky day planned for yesterday with Keith to go to Muir but bagged it based upon the forecast. I'm glad you and Ed are made of tougher stuff.
Shoulda gone!
Did it ski OK or sticky?
Top photo is just great. Captures the joy of fully submerged deep bushwacking!
Thanks for the inspiration.

Ironically I was looking at that far chute today wondering when I would get out there this year. Maybe the cornices have recessed enough to safely get to the top of Gov ridge next to it, did you see?
From the top of the west chute (2nd picture middle rt), it's tough to tell, you have to kinda know where to look, but was there continuous snow on the other side to Owyhigh Lake?...
Justin, Great TR.  Could you please post a few photos that might increase the enjoyment factor of an old guy sitting at a terminal and working on a boating adventure.  ;D
Saw your tracks in the chute. Looked sweet. We were climbing Ingraham and got smamped in the T-storm mess at the flats. I knew I could find out who was layin tracks up there, looks like you were the only one! Great job!
Where is Hawkins?
That's funny Ron-

Surprisingly the main body of the terrain back there is pretty mellow rolling...
Love the photo of the pooch napping.  I was there in '01 with my pooch and she happened to meet up with a porcupine which left her with a mouth and face full of quails.  Great touring in that area, thanks for sharing the current conditions.
Nice. Not many Hawkins posts.
I did Hawkins in June of 07, but only got about 500' vertical. Seems like your trip was much more enjoyable skiing wise.
I was contemplating hiking/skining up Denny and then coming back down international. Did you catch a view of conditions up top at all?
Nice report Michael. Thanks.
You're encroaching on Joedabaker's back yard ;)
That's nice terrain back there. We call your highway chute "Big Rock Chute" due to the volkswagen to boxcar size boulders scattered at the bottom.  8)

This is commendably silly!

It may, in fact, be an up-and-coming trend in the backcountry.

You were full of energy !  ;) Thanks for the conditions report.  Nice tracks in the last photo.
Oooops.  Guess that's what happens when you bring the beers up with you, no incentive to find them on the way down.
Could've sworn I saw you guys drop into the SW chutes 1/2 hr before we headed down...
Good info; great pics, wolfs.
Thanks.
It's a shame you got him on teles at such a young age. He has so many years ahead of him...

Robyn, I think that I met your folks at a party a few months back.

That's funny, Snow Bell--such a small world this is! Were they perhaps playing music at this party?

looks like a fun trip; thanks for the report.
Here are the photos of the weekend - sorry to say that I didn't take any "ski pics" since I was skiing myself (Actually trying to keep up with Dave, Doug, and Tom).  Great trip BTW

Yay!!

P.s.
Nice work with the self-timer on that last photo!  You must be quick on your feet.
Great photo essay!  I felt like I went on the whole trip.  You guys found some nice steep stuff!
I guess I shoulda tried calling you when we decided at the last minute to go to Snoqualmie. We went to Silver Peak and found about the same snow conditions you described (except I didn't notice you mentioning the dreaded pollen---if you escaped that you chose much more wisely than us!)
