Big fun. Hope to be skiing with you soon.

concerning the name of peak 6567...
Peakbagger has it listed as "Tahtlum" peak per a submission by Eric Noel.

According to "the Internet", tahtlum is a Chinook word for "ten"

It's not listed in the Beckey guide.

What's up with that?
Regarding the North Face of Maude, your pictures taken in the area two weeks earlier look radically different than what we encountered. From Seven Finger, the NF of Maude looked shot. That being said, rock ribs might be hiding the real line.
Nice work getting out there
You have to love bushwhacking in the dark.
When I was up there two weekends ago the summit was not really skiable.  It was a mess of deep steps, avy runnels and fallen and exposed rocks.  By now I can't imagine it would be worth skiing above the base of the pyramid.
We skied the Squak yesterday from Sherman Peak.  We hiked the trail with intermittent snow to about 4600' and skinned from there.  On the descent we were able to stay west of the prominent north/south ridge and ski down to about 4200’ with limited dirt skiing.  It was really descending on skis rather than skiing, but it was much faster than walking.  By this weekend I expect that route will only get you to about 4400’ because the last 200 was sketchy side slipping down a barely snow covered...
My brother Gordy posted a story about our trip on his blog at greatoutdoors.com:

http://www.greatoutdoors.com/blogs/gordys/20090615/skiing-the-dakobed-traverse-tools-or-toys

The story includes a nice video of skiing Glacier Peak. Enjoy!
Another article on the lost sailor:

Great, thanks very much.
That one's a classic. Nice work.

The reaction of the Fishermen and campers by the TH is always the same too, no matter how long this route has been a 'classic.' Part of the traditional experience I guess. So is hitting Buckeye hot springs on the way out.

So where are the rest of your Eastside TRs? Basin Peak? Mt Tom? C'mon, we need your well crafted TRs to inspire a few more trips to the south.

Ron: We missed you too.  Ally and I will be in your area for two weeks in August.  I might bring my skis :).  Hope to run into you!

That'd be cool.
The Slush Cup might be ready for you about then!! Bring your bathing suits!!

I bet the NF of Maude had to still be looking good though right?  I barely squeezed my trip in as far as snow pack goes, was able to link up snowfields from about 50 ft below the summit all the way down into the trees.  timing is everything ;) Good on ya for getting up there, maybe next spring!
Spoke to Tom Ingve of the of Denver Wholesale Ski from whom I purchased the skis about the delamination. I guess this is the downside of purchasing over the internet.

Basically he said that I was over skiing the skis, (a big assumption), that he could try to get Atomic to issue an RTA to replace it but don't count on it and that the process will take a very long time and I'll be without my skis. This is especially true as they are are new, but an older model.

So I...

Zap: I wish we knew about the Buckeye or the Travertine hot springs....  Next time we'll stop for sure.

Robyn: You can probably ski it for a few more weeks, but the upper section is starting to show rocks.  There are more good lines in the area if you don't mind a short hike.  The snow was brillantly smooth and silky up high.

When we stepped off the parking lot pavement. ;D

excellent, that's what I was hoping to hear.
Great, thanks for the beta.
On the way in we hiked the trail until about 5,000' elevation, which took almost 2 hours. It was about 50% snow covered, with long dirt patches as well. On the way back we skied quite a bit further down, having scoped the trail on the way up. By this weekend I'm guessing you'll have to hike about the same, but it's still probably the best approach.
fun day all around!  but i will say this: glissading is no where near as fun as skiing.  what do i mean i didn't bring skis??  exactly.   ::)
the top sheep was delaminating at the tip!

Oops, he said sheepishly.   ::)
Good solo jaunt.

I heard from a friend who went up easton last weekend that there is still snow on the road (1/2 mile b4 trailhead) and only a few parts of the trail were dirt. Who knows what has happened over the past few days....

This seems really different from the original post from AndyMartin, being able to ski down to 4200', thus about 800 vf non-skiing to/from the tra...

Just curious if you think Squawk is still the best route up and how much walking will there be before skis and skins are on.
May head up on Sunday.
Mike

Hate to say it, but it is the best IMO. Approach and traffic are low, but the route seems to be getting more traffic this year

How quick were you on snow from Heather Meadows?

When we stepped off the parking lot pavement. ;D
Nice, good coverage by the looks of it.
Snow Bell and I skied the N Face of Ptarmagin Peak last year and it's a nice steep ski.( good pictures of it on Telemons TT post).
Think I might get up there this coming weekend, thanks for the conditions report.
Thanks for the infor recent climbers/skiers.  Just curious if you think Squawk is still the best route up and how much walking will there be before skis and skins are on.  May head up on Sunday.

Great writing style! We/I was looking t your site TR on cannon Mt last week prior to getting over there. Didn't feel like bushwhacking to the extent that appeared necessary, so we did Colchuck Glacier, but great website nevertheless!
Great write up and pics!  I agree, I like the Squak far more than the Easton as well.  More direct and a better fall line.
Nice trip guys! Way to get some fun turns in!
It was a pretty decent day. I have been spoiled with many successful trips into this area.We got enough glimpses of what is out there to enjoy both visually and ski-wise to give the day a thumbs up. The cloud issues were a  bit of a pain, but all and all ,a half FULL glass kind of day.  http://www.telemarktalk.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=806613#806613
More detailed conditions :

1) Road is clear to trailhead.  Trail is snow free and easy to above the switchbacks

2) The glacier is still very well filled in on climbers left.

3) From what I could see of the summit, the central gully looked like it was *probably past skiing, but I couldn't be sure.  By the time I was near the pyramid it was a complete whiteout, but parties who had camped and hit the morning clearing had summitted.  Not sure of their route, the...
Very cool! How much longer do you think it will be possible to ski that line? I'm heading back down in the Tahoe direction tomorrow, and may be looking for something fun to ski in the Sierra shortly after...

P.S. I live in Kings Beach, so if you guys are in Reno we should definitely go skiing sometime. I'm still looking for partners down there who think that skis are a necessary piece of climbing equipment more or less year-round  8)
Funny, we just read that story last weekend while camped out and waiting for the weather to clear.  It's in the Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac.  Gary Snyder (under the pseudonym Japhy Ryder) scrambles up to the top of the Matterhorn, while Kerouac perches halfway up, paralyzed by the altitude and steepness, until he is revitalized when Snyder comes bounding back down the scree in large leaps, exclaiming that "you can't fall of the mountain!"  Not sure of the route...
cool .. there's a great story about climbing the matterhorn by gary snyder .. one of his haunts back in the day .. and has always interested me ... skiing it is a new concept  :)

yeah dj ... dharma bums .. that must've been it .. thx for jogging my memory .. it's been a while .. i went thru most of jk's books one winter
Sawtooth Ridge is a spectacular sight while soaking in Travertine hot springs with a "cold one" as the sun sets.  ;)

Did you stop at Buckeye or Travertine hot springs ?
Great report -- I love the "snow that has gone to seed"...
How were road conditions and the dry part of the approach?  Any significant obstacles on the approach or the route?
We were up there on Sunday the 14th and conditions were great. We climbed the boulder field, but skied down the Scott-Paul which worked out well. No summit due to one member of the party running out of gas, but a great day on the mountain above the clouds.
Nice work, Kamster.
We miss you, Ally.
Thanks for the TR from the South. I spent many years in June Lake and love to see these reports looks like a fun trip.
Nice report, Andy.
Thanks for posting.
I'll try to get some pics posted Tuesday.  Thanks for your interest.
Yep, agreed.
It's a good one.
Her's a shot of Bonnie and Kit challenging the Foss Blowhole:

More photos under this shot of Kit's legendary skiing:
Always count on Ron for a good day ! That's a great ski  specially with the Sunbeam exit. Seem's like it's getting to be grill time.
There were some tracks going up the road, but the ruts were pretty deep and my truck couldn't handle it.  A large, high clearance truck with off-road tires probably would have made it.  Also, the way things are going, it may be almost fully melted out by next weekend.  Have fun!

...so settled for 1.5 days with an overnighter sprinkled in for fun.

hmmmm...one can only wonder what this means  ;D
Jonathan,
You are correct in access assesment. I do find it easier once past  Naches peak and saddle to cross over the ridge to it's  south  side  to gain access to the Goat trail going up 6567 which we(Tacoma mountaineers) call "Robo " For RObie and BOb Nitzinger. Of course many here have thier own special names for 6567 . It's a fun ski .  Don't forget to get some hero pictures with the camera to east of the skier with Rainier in the background . Like this or mayb...
Stupid question time:  where exactly did you park, and what is the approach to 6567?
I've done laps on Naches Peak before, parking almost immediately adjacent to the snow.
Looking at the topo map, seems possible to park there and traverse kind of E-SE to 6567 (skirting to the north of Naches Peak along the way).
Or is it possible to park further to the south along that hairpin turn in 410, then traverse almost due east?  (The topo map, or at least the downloaded ove...

By backside do you mean the east/NE slope that  has the steep rollover?  I've looked down that but have yet to try.  Looks to have some great potential.

We usually like to do a run down the main NE face then boot up to the saddle due north of the summit. That's where we ski into the "backside". Once that's done we're committed to anothe...
