Usually we do a lap on the backside, but dark clouds to the south and dirt patches near the top had us out of there right away. Heard some thunder on the return trip. Got a run off the corniced ridge of Naches into the east bowl to finish the day. Brenda had never skied from that spot before. Very nice.

Hi Michael,
By backside do you mean the east/NE slop...

Nicely done.
I love that trip.
We saw your tracks and heard you guys from the top of Foss (never did see any of you).
Interesting weather, eh?

Hi Ron, I knew we were entering your territory.  I thought I felt your presence close!  Few skiers out judging by the parking pullouts.  I was surprised.
J
:)  Awesome trip in my favorite spring ski area!

Several of us were up on Clarke Mtn. this past weekend.  The clouds did help the snow conditions but definitely made it touch and go for the summit and surrounding high points.

Did you get a few pics around Buck?

hehe, Holly has cajones. :)

I really should chastize you for that, Stugie...
But if I did I'd get called out by Mark for starting it.
Guess I'd better leave it be, eh?  ::)

Great TR.
It deserves an "A" for courage.
I do a lot of trips like that but I just don't have the cajones to post them  ;D

hehe, Holly has cajones.  :)
We were wondering if those tracks were from the day before, as there was nobody back there yesterday. I remember telling Brenda that back in the olden days :) there'd be people all over the place on a weekend day in June. Maybe the weather had people scared off. The bridge on hwy 169 isn't helping either, but we discovered 167 south from Renton to 164 is about the same as before.
third picture, ski pole is straddling my track from the day before. Still lots of good skiing up there.
Nice John!  Good to see the latest... sounds fun.
Good info, Michael.
Good TR; Great pics.
Looks to be some skiing left at Chinook.
Were there tracks going up the road and do you think that it was clear enough to make it to cold springs if you had the right height truck?
AWESOME! way to go ... seriously  :)
Nice to meet you as well, Steve.

Snow (and lack thereof) was more or less as Don had replied in response to my optimistic daydreams. And the little bit of hiking through the magical forest was indeed time well spent, so the snowmelt was not a tragedy.

After multiple weekends of lots of travel, it was nice to get out for a lazy afternoon tour with a minimal drive. Just what the doctor ordered.

We had awesome views of the insides of the clouds that were cruising...
I was across the way on Denny and encountered thunder claps half way up to the snow...one of those "oh sh*t" moments with board on the pack holding two metal poles.  Although my chance at snow was stalled, it was nice exercise and always good to get out of the city.

Has anyone been to the (real) Slot recently?

great tr ... really nice writing ... sorry you didn't get er done .. but yeah the mountains were scary so thumbs up for your effort

Back at ya, Aaron.

Anita and I went back yesterday.  Parked at PCT trail, walked trail for a few minutes, then ascended NW bowl to ridge, where we encountered a group of 4 or 5 adults and a newborn baby!  Yoyoed NW, then skinned back to the ridge, where we ran into Jim Oker and his buddy.  Skied out NE bowl.  Significant snow loss on exit compared to last Wednesday night.

Nice to meet you Jim.  :)

Such a fine place, alone or with friends... Glad you got it good! :)!
Quite a trip! Bet it was fun.
Thanks for the update/
Plan on heading up Saturday and spending the night at Crag View since I have been up this way 3 times and never spent the night.
Thanks for the report; hopefully conditions will still be good in two weeks time.

Joe,
The Adams trip was not cancelled, but unforetunately Holly couldn't make it.  The Adams trip went off... Nicely 8).

T.R. to follow.  Now back to that pesky work thing...

Holly: "Pshaw! Adams... we summited Cave Ridge." (Smirk.)  :)

LOL...nice.  I ran into snow at around 3600', losing the trail.  Another time.  Sorry no slot this time...perhaps you can still try the slot with that quarter Holly found? :D
Perfect.
Just the way I would have done it  :)
(except I wouldn' have made it up from Morrison Creek CG to Pikers in 5.5 hrs... not even close)  8)

We contemplated Pineapple, the Tatoosh, and Silver Peak... you know, all the more obvious choices... too easy.  ::)
Nice work Chris, glad you made it out after all.  :)

You presume me only half-neckid?   ;)

Giving you the benefit of the doubt there...  ;D

I have a BD Predator pack and abso-fricken-lutely love it! Great support and breaks down really light... great for overnight, maybe too much for day pack, but can't beat it's overall functionality.

Great TR and photos.  The weather sure makes a touring day short but then you probably had a good supply of Deschutes beer, firewood and all those "new friends" at your campsite.   ;)

Yeah - Deschutes beer tastes good, but always tastes better when camping ;)

what is about those southern oregon cascaders? mountain folk who won't respond???

Lots of shy "hill folk down here".........
...I even found a "lucky" quarter at the trailhead. (Keep this up and I think skiing could be a highly lucrative money maker for me!)

Hey, I lost a quarter once, it could be mine...

...when an angelic voice of reason called out...

I think I've heard that voice, too, pulling us back on course on Baker.  And I've always thought of Brad as kind of a hum...
Sorry you two got skunked, but hopefully you learned a few lessons after this one. One of these days I can show you all the way... weather is a different story.

That's not a Brookie, but nice way to mix up activities. I'm almost in full fly fishing mode! You have some very nice fishing waters down there. Enjoy!

You're right, I posted the pic of the little redside I caught.  Didn't get any real good pics of the brookies.......

Are those a pair of Factor's Chris is wearing.??????
If so did he leave them behind.???
See Random Tracks re pair of Factors left on Adams.
Bad luck with weather.

Nope, those are the Methods.  And I have them in the storage room, so no lost gear for me.
So the Slot remains elusive.  All the better for when you get around to it.
I wouldn't suppose it to be in great shape right about now anyway but I could be wrong.
Glad you guys got out, I heard that your Adams trip was called off.  Maybe I can join you when you do go.

Nice work getting out there in the horrific weather we are experiencing in the PNW.
I'm too much of a pansy to take the chance of getting rained on  ;).

Thanks for putting up the TR Chris.  Fun trip despite the fickle weather.

The Frying Pan Creek Trail is in great condition with just one tree to duck and no bridge troubles.  Nearly snow free until the final crossing below Summerland.  A much nicer walk than the one to Glacier Basin.

It was a good opportunity to work out some bugs in my ever evolving over night pack.  I am having trouble reconciling the light frameless packs with extended periods with my skis and boots atta...

Ran into a guy named Aaron who was waiting on the ridge for two buddies to join him.

Good to meet you up there Big Steve!

He probably won't respond....  they are in southern Oregon Cascades...

McLaughlin is South of Crater Lake, Or. Northwest of Klamath Falls.

Bailey is North of Crater lake, search for Daimond Lake, Or. and you will find that it is adjacent to the lake on the west side.

Diamond is South of Hwy 58 near Crescent Lake, Oregon.
Skied here on Sat -- drove a little ways up the clearcuts from Windy Pass till blocked by snow.  Hiked snow covered roads to top of clearcuts.    Booted up to North ridge, lounged on summit until thunder rumbles at noon got us moving again.   A few rain sprinkles accompanied our descent down the north basin -- Sun cupped snow was soft enough to make pleasant skiing -- soft -- but not mushy.   With a little "rock walking on skis"  on the couple of bare patches on the logging roads,...
Keith, thanks for the conditions report and photos.
Oh well, a guy can dream...
Jim,
Going up we stayed in the forest along Silver side or creek and ponds, and it there was quite a bit of not-snow. Nice hike up but not skiable for coming down. So, we tried out a bit from edge of forest into meadow on the way down, and just had one spot where we had to regain 30' or so of altitude to get really far down, and no brushy areas. Probably just lucky, because it is a bit of a maze. Either way, it's a nice hike as well as a nice ski on the kind of day we've been...
Hey Don, good to see you are making good use of your free Fridays.  Gabriel and I skied Silver on Wednesday night, continuing the Wednesday night beer/ski tradition.  We ascended NW bowl, descended NE (left of creek), as usual.  Continuous snow up and down above 4000 feet.  Ran into a guy named Aaron who was waiting on the ridge for two buddies to join him.  We might run up there tomorrow for some laps.

Jim, agree that staying in forest is best bet for continuous snow.  We skied...
Lowell -- Great TR (as always).  I friend and I did most of the same traverse on foot in late June many years ago -- one of the nicest high traverses I have done. Didn't see a soul except for little dots in the distance glissading down Glacier Peak as we approached across the snow field on a Sunday afternoon, and then the Navy fighter pilot that buzzed the pass.  Always thought that it would be a great one on skis.
