Awesome... I was looking at coming in via the Middle Fork for that last year -- nice variation. Thanks for posting.
I was up there on Tuesday. It looks as if the sun cups are growing quickly. I would advise anyone who goes there to wax up and go early, there is lots of pollen.
Gary and Jan,
that is wonderful fun!
bridge is open now, will need to get out there before it is all gone!

Congrats on the trip. Was thinking of you guys as I skied the gloppy mess of Victor Pass's N. Bowl last weekend, looks like it corned up a little better where you were. It also looks like that col above round lake is much easier to gain when its a skin/bootpack up to it, and not a hike through bushes and streams...seems my timing is always off with these things!
I like the look of that thin line behind Eric in the last photo. Good to see your getting out there and enjoying the goods. Nothing like the Alps though.... 8)
Hi !
I was part of the party of 6 you saw coming up. Like you found a variety of conditions from guck to enjoyable corn chowder. Considered following your tracks dropping into the Summerland basin, but opted right by the "helmet", down, and around a small cliff band. Very messy with numerous sloughs.

I was up there today (6/6)- still good coverage to top of Sessel chair. I opted to boot as opposed to skinning and was glad I had my AT boots vs snowboard boots. There is a snowbridge above a creek at roughly 3800 ft. Opted to avoid it on foot and crossed my fingers on the descent. Decent skiing for a short trip to get June turns in and my dog loved the excuse to play in the snow.
Thanks for the conditions report, Silas.
Good to have you back.
Good to have you back.
We thought that the snow actually got better lower on the mountain. Here is the theory - the snow up high is not as well consolidated since the warm temps had just started 10 days earlier, yet down low, it has been much warmer for longer with less new snow in early May. So on a warm day like Sunday it is pretty mushy up high, where the snow down low is much denser already.
Great meeting up with you and Lee at the summit -- funny that we e-mailed the day before and met on t...

Wait, where in the Alps is this? I didn't see it in the title.
It's great to have a special place that brings back memories of someone. ;)
Closest tour to home is over an hour away, and we had the place to ourselves; post tour double hamburger, fries, and parfait takeout at McDonalds, eaten on a bench across the street from ProSki was American ambiance. Not better or worse than Europe, just different?
More good info...I'll check Becky's bible with all that in mind....

Or the toe :)
thanks for update, I just got a sweet deal on some new Coombas... can't wait till the next powder day (gotta ski em now) so a quick tour up in the Alp bc is just what I need this weekend!
Very high quality video. Felt like I wanted to be there real bad. Nice

One is more descriptive than the other and you spent 3/4 of the ascent on the cleaver. So, cleaver it is. Boulder Glacier route has more hazards, as stated above, especially the Lahar flows that happen more frequently than people may think. Boulder Glaicer is fairly unique in this regard and should be respected. When gaining the top of the cleaver, one could head onto the Boulder Glacier or the Park Glacier to summit. The Emmons comment I shall dismiss... PS- nice name dropping!

Hey Keith,
That was Snowgirl and I you yodeled at, down in the valley below. I even said, "I bet that's Keith Henson up there!" Great photos! I'm sorry it didn't occur to me to take one of you, though you were just a speck way up there! Thanks for the TR!
When I yodeled I had no idea that there was anyone around.. I was just...
I'm going to inform the Mountaineers that snow conditions are excellent for a team glissading practise.
Thanks for the information. ;D

Beauty, thanks for posting. I'm going to take my entire local high school out there Saturday morning... ;)
How was the coverage on the trail out to source lake?

It seems to me that the last two "Boulder Glacier" trip reports in the past couple weeks have actually been on Boulder/Park Cleaver
Fred calls it the "Boulder Glacier" route...and after the cleaver the route is on the boulder glacier. "The simplest route is to ascent the Boulder-Park cleaver...."
Hmmmm....does this mean I...
Good call. I backed off of that ridge a couple years ago too - I'm not up to that in ski boots!
Thanks for the conditions report. Glad to hear that you're still "yodeling". ;)
nice Keith! Some beautiful weather to ski in, that's for sure!

It seems to me that the last two "Boulder Glacier" trip reports in the past couple weeks have actually been on Boulder/Park Cleaver (I could be wrong, but the pictures links look like it). The cleaver is a safer route from typical hazards (including Lahar's!!!) and it should be noted...PS- snowmobiling will be closed for the year from Schreiber's Meadow on Friday.
Thanks for the excellent beta!!! Now I just need a solid weather forecast to cut down on the chances of being skunked :) ???

Park Headwall to Boulder-Park Cleaver has always been my favorite Baker route. From Oregon: I5 => Hwy 20 east "North Cascades Highway" (well-signed exit in Burlington or Mt Vernon) => Left on Baker Lake Road (after Sedro Woolley, just before Concrete), Left after the bridge over Boulder Creek, which I believe has a sign, then stay left on the dirt road.
Nice TR..looks like some good terrain and NO SNOWMOSSSSSSS!! So, if I was coming from Bend or to ski that route, what highways would you suggest to take once in Wa? And fs road #'s and name of trail head etc.. Any info super helpful please... How is the weather up your way. Huge thunderstorm and rains all week here in Bend, Or. Suppose to settle down a 'tad'...fingers crossed...

Ah, sorry, I misread your post. Looks like starting this weekend it'll be much more quiet though. Nice.
Thanks for the clarification Teleskichica and Toby.

I believe this was the most skiers I have ever seen on the summit of Mt Baker. It may be time to christen it 'Tuckermans West!' Great skiing for sure!
Good to see Rich finally got some new boots. If there is one thing I know about him is he farts way too much when there are three people sleeping in a two man tent. Nice trip. Sweet area.
$17,000. I'd do it again if I was in the same situation, but next time I will have the insurance, and my SPOT turned on! I guess I'll be hiking in the Chugach instead of flying... and driving my old truck!
Dale - did you mean to leave off a zero, or am I reading that correctly in that it's more than the cost of some brand new cars?
Best wishes on a quick recovery!

Nice work - I had a similar experience with the thunder and lightening last year. Looks like the snow is still holding up somewhat up higher, though I imagine it'll start going pretty fast now.
+1 to glenn's response. I'd take a chance on this weekend. N aspects will have snow, and the SE bowl of Fortune holds snow longer than one might expect for a SE aspect. (My theory is that the bowl, which gets big lee dumps, is in the shadow of Esmeralda). Expect considerable walking and lovely views. It's usually pretty mellow skiing up there.
Yes, just anticipate a longer hike in and out. We've been having temps in the low 90s here in E-burg so the snowline will be melting up on the south-facing approaches. Across Ingalls Pass, the snow hangs in pretty well for a while yet. Enjoy. Also, bring your parking pass; the man might be coming up to check.
I just spent half an hour following your traverse on TOPO. Great stuff... so many of the named peaks and glaciers that you passed aren't in the software, unfortunately.
Think there will be any turns left in that area by this coming weekend, 6/6 or 7?
Great photos and story! Thanks for the TR.
Wow! I hope you recover soon, thanks for sharing the info on buying insurance, I can't believe it cost $17k, that is outrageous! Take care of yourself and may you have a speedy recovery, I am glad you survived.
Lowell, et al - phenomenal - love it - getting some great ideas...........for next year
Sweet. Thanks for the TR and more ideas. I love the pic of the guys on Tiger Tower.
