Cool---we skied over your tracks in the fog yesterday.
Did you leave one BD pole and a Petzl axe/pole at the very top of the glacier?   They wera t the very top of the snow yesterday.

Those aren't ours - we saw several parties going up after us - one of them must have left it.  We also met a party that was climbing Pinnacle Peak; another party go...
I'll piggyback on Silas's thread since our summit ski was the same day.

The skiing above where Silas turned around was indeed just transportation skiing -- on the descent, once we passed that most sketchy crevasse (with the picket in place), it was like passing through to the Kingdom of Corn.

Also, some video footage from our partner Loren --

I must have overlapped with some of you -- I definitely remember seeing a Zzero4 + MBSL setup in that big group at the base where everyone was de-skiing (which turns out to be a mistake).

I pulled into Cold Springs ~8:00 Friday night (after skiing off the summit of Rainier earlier in the day).  I got a late start Saturday morning at a bit past 8:00, reached the summit at 2:00, was in the Chutes sometime after that, and back at the campsite by 5:00.  Some pics here:

Sweet TR, Ryan. Burly line. :).
Wolfs,

Bill Doyle here, I'm the skier you met atop the Frying Pan. Thanks for the advice and the tracks, I was really considering retracing my steps over meany Crest and am very glad I didn't.

Nice work gentlemen!!  Quite the route to knock off, congratulations to you all!
You are pretty bad ass yourself Ryan, well done.  8)

yeah, we were going to take them down to see if we could find the owners but then figured they were probably Ranger Rick's and we didn't want to get yelled at and h...

Beauty -- thanks for the report.  Looks great.
Nice! that's a hell of a tour for such a short time! props!
The snow looks so much like yesterday at the Tatoosh but the sky is SO different!
Congrats on a most amazing journey!!!!!!!

Oops--posted this on the wrong page.   :-[  Thanks for moving it.
ultradonkey -- miraculously i caught a pic of you standing on the summit (it was unintentional but very cool -- i have 2 shots -- one just b4 w/o and the next with you) ... we were camped below on the ridge and i said hi ... when we have them edited i'll post it and pm you ... now to unpack all the wet stuff ....ugh

o yeah jason ... i forgot ... and some good shots of your killer turns of the day, too  ;)

Great work Ryan. I wish i could've been there with you guys...sort of. Thanks for the story. Sounds like an amazing trip.
Ally and Kam - May your years grow increasingly blissful, skiing, enjoying one another and growing old together.
I certainly wish that I could have taken advantage of your offer to allow me to tag along with your party. I am going to block out a big section of my late June/early July 1010 calendar for a Squak Glacier climb. With the weather forecast of the day, I am surprised that you needed to wear all that winter clothing at the summit.
thanks for the well-wishes everyone!  oh, and nice boa kam.  :)
Thanks for the report as always....nice to see the extended pics on TT too, amazing to see the change within a month.  Now to decide next weeks overnight....there or Sunrise.
It was a great time up there. Nice to meet another skier (I think that was you anyhow).  What a great place! I couldn't believe how many people there were in that area though. A shock to us after not seeing anyone for nearly a week.
The photo looking down the mountain is the ascent route I took, with Disappointment Peak in the fore/middle ground.  Yeah, I really wanted to get back into those big suncups fast, so I had to cut down on the talking:)
A nap at Piker's and a shot of the chutes -- the exit to the main chute is melting quick, but may last the week if it doesn't get cooked again.
I think you skied right past us as we were climbing to camp Saturday night near Glacier Gap?  Great job going from the road to the summit and back to your camp in one day!  That's a long haul.
Nice work and thanks for the conditions update.  Is that second picture looking back down from Glacier toward the approach route, with the N Fork Sauk valley in the far background?
The leftward traversing exit seems like it would be unpleasant if melted out - I'm assuming it's more of that volcanic talus that we all crossed in our thankfully-short carries this past weekend.

Some of the suncups were insane - I'm sure others here have seen worse but it was the worst I'd seen. Believe me, I stuck to the slalom runs in those areas except for brief moments where I could squeeze a shorter radius turn in thanks to a rare smaller bump/divot. If we&#...
Interesting, jcocci -- we dropped in right around 1:30.  We were a group of seven, though we skied it more spread out, to keep things moving.  There were spots that were a little scraped off and spots out to the sides that were a little bumpy, but all in all I thought it was excellent skiing.  We were just getting out when the first big one came down, though another big one came down about 45 minutes later -- that's the one that hit one of the other skiers.

Jim, I read your repor...
Interesting how differently folks can assess the same conditions.

We loved the chutes in late afternoon on the 3rd (verging on 4PM) - fairly smooth, and the corn was wonderful especially if you avoided turning where prior skiers had scraped down to a bit of ice/frozen granular. But we heard later from ascending climbers that some of the folks ahead of us deemed them nearly unskiable. I'm betting this was more than just differences due to time of day, as it didn't sound as i...
If you're wanting to know if the entrance to the chute is totally gone, you can just barely see it (when visibility allows) on the Paradise webcam.
Long Story

With all the good weather forecast I decided to forgo my usual style of 'fast as possible' and actually enjoy a trip.  With that in mind I drove late Friday night to the North Fork Sauk TH with the idea of getting plenty of rest for the next day.  Well, being me, that turned into only 1 hour of sleep, but who cares, the sky was blue and the temps nice and warm.

The NF Sauk trail seems to have fallen into disrepair over the last few years, and while ea...
Hmm...

What time did you guys hit the chutes on the 4th? I was there with a group and we hit them at about 1:30pm and they were crap in my opinion. We also saw a good sized boulder go hauling down the mountain along with a bunch of small ones. Luckily it didn't hit anyone.
Congratulations!

Skied down to the lake for a nice 1500'.

You skied it twice? ;D
Your tracks on Sunday.
Congrats Kam and Allyson!
Congrats! Many happy turns to you both!
Its nice to hear that the SW chutes are smooth
...i thought the rock looked more like a flying television than a pinwheeling refrigerator :)

although the top and the bottom of the mountain were definitely marginal skiing it was nice to finally ski the chutes when they were consistent corn from top to bottom without ever getting mashed potatoey...but yeah, i think that route is just about done for the year.
I ran into you guys on that special day in November. If I remember right, your ring was the only "joy" that happened that day.
So, this is what the Internet has done for skiing!
Awesome.  Congratulations you two!
Congratulations, Allyson and Kam!!!!
Hi Folks - I had the delightful honor of accompanying Jim on this epic ski adventure, and the attached photos will hopefully provide some additional data points on the snow conditions... I hope that you also get to experience the unique Joy of Christmas in July - whoo hoo!  coreski

Nice work Silas!  Glad you got the goods -- that's a helluva nice corn harvest...

I think next time I try to climb Rainier, I'll climb it and leave the skis at home.  That is a lot of work hauling that extra gear up the mountain.

I thought the same thing when I was hauling my skis up- but when I skied down it was totally worth it!
Hi Stim, we must be in perpendicular universes.  We spent the vacation in Ellensburg, with other family members hanging out at Deception Pass.  Ski ya later!
Allyson and Kam: Way 2 git it done!
I headed to Chinook yesterday, Saturday the fourth with my friend Les  Gerstmann. At the road we met TAY lurkers Mark and Dale who, for decades, have carried on a tradition of skiing on July 4.

We traversed and booted, 95% on snow, to the corniced ridge west of Naches. PCT is melting out in places. Perfect climbing snow. Nice corn on the steep sections. Suncups were soft but have been softer in the past.

Made it back to the car ski traversing and climbing 100% on snow.
Bob S, Ari Lazier, and I were up there on Friday too.  We too saw Amar (who did an amazing day) as we were booting up at 6000 feet.  We went as high as the col between Liberty Cap and true summit when time and energy levels were both running low.  We started down at around 2:30pm.

There are two gapers that had us concerned enough to "belay".  The first at the top of the corridor, which is straight, wide, and smooth.  It required trusting a 1&#...

Ski conditions on the Inter Glacier a very rough bumpy dirty surface in nearly all areas, and studded with rocks of all sizes especially on the lower half and the runout to Glacier Basin.

We found it not bad descending with overnight packs yesterday around 2PM.  Bumps were soft, and following each others tracks also made it not so bumpy.  Let's talk it u...
Dunno how fast it will melt. If I were going next weekend, I'd want a backup plan (e.g. buck up and ski the bumps on the s. climb - still prolly better than hiking and may be getting big enough to be like inverse moguls  :D), and I'd want to scope the line from down below to see if the central chute was still continuous (easily done on the road from getting a permit at Trout Lake, as well as along FR 23, as long as you have daylight. I'd also look at the traverse at the bottom (go...
