8/23: Lacking partner for more exotic places, I hiked up to 8900' on the snowfield, to base of steeper slope up to Camp Muir, where the glacial ice, rock, running water, new water ice and cracks begin in earnest. Picked my way across from climbers right through all that to smoother areas of giant suncups with melt ponds in their bottom, and agree with MaryG that these are fun to ski. About an inch of gritty corn or shave ice snow on harder stuff. Skied to above Pebble Creek for about 1400...
awesome Oyvind ! those look like some skinny sticks !
author=Oyvind_Henningsen link=topic=13968.msg58484#msg58484 date=1250893706]man how did we ever make turns on 55-55-55???
I think I skied a lot faster in those days.
Way to get back to your roots, Oyvind!
- thanks, Mark. Timberline emailed me saying they usually have enough snow to make it to August. He didn't give any specifics about stockpiling. It is called the Palmer Snowfield -- and not the Palmer Glacier ! I said,
due to grooming and salting, & he said grooming keeps it cleaner. In '05 it melted out. The top of the snowfield is 8,500 so that must help. I've been on the Snowdome and that's a great spot.

I was just up at Hood a week or so ago, and suprisingly the White River Glacier and Zigzag snowfield were in decent shape. Usually the best lift served skiing is around Labor Day in September, or in early October, both of which are after the camps close. There's no one around and you can have the mountain mostly to yourself...
Timberline farms snow intensively; they collect it all winter, accumulating huge stockpiles, pushing it here and there to drag out the season as long as possible. Usually, they'll make it last just long enough to run their camps, including the terrain parks and halfpipes, through the summer. In a poor snow year it's touch and go by this point in the season.
Given the regularity of the terrain and the winds, hardly any snow accumulates naturally anywhere in the alpine e...

- that sounds and looks like Folgefonna. Unless there is another summer skicentre in the North ? I put in a report last year at this time. That snow looks killer ! It looks like the same kickers on the hill. I forgot the water at the base of the T. I miss the T-bar at Mammoth. I learned how to ski pow off that lift !
re - Telemon ! I emailed Timberline (Mt Hood) and inquired how they keep their snow ?? on the Palmer snowfield. Hopefully they'll reply, probably not. It's on their webcam !
if you'd like I can send you an 8X10, of the week before with a cool cloud cap, and this wk. of clear sky. I first need a digital, (next season) and I think I can send to the website, from the Library.

- what a great Marmot shot. Looks as though he's been at that rock before ! I guess they like the sun as well as the overcast. I skiied a bunch at Lassen. They lick the asphalt for dumped out sodas or whatnot.
I actually had one lick the sweat by my ankle ! on Mt Dana, 13,000 ft (Tioga Pass, Tuolomne) about 5 years back. Thanks for the pic

I was up there with a group last Saturday. We went up via Pebble Creek and took off across the bottom of of the Muir snowfield. Crossed the ridge below Sugarloaf (?) and on up to the glacier proper. We broke out of the clouds around 6400 ft. Climbed up to around 8200 ft, did some rescue practice right below the big rock lump at that elevation and then skied down. The snow was good (to me at least) until we good down in the low 7000s. We also hit fog down below...
Great pictures... though that second to last one is an awfully furry flower ;)
relaxing? Did I miss something?
Great day and thanks for the nice post, Mary.
Who'da thought brown snow and giant suncups would be so much fun?

You shouldnaught stopped to say hello to me and you woulda got a better spot. Glad you had a good day and for sure you got in more skiing . Lots of parking at paradise in winter when you all are at Crystal ;-). Sometimes there' sooo much powder we can't make up our minds which part of paradise to ski !
Thanks for the nice views and the TR. I couldn't make the slush cup either and was thinking of this for this coming weekend. May need a plan B.
Thanks for the report! The skiing sounds less grim than I would have guessed.
Here's a tip from an old (very old, actually) hand regarding parking at Paradise: Try the picnic area just below the old VC site. All day parking is legal there as long as it's in a marked space, which can make the road hiking quite a bit shorter than from the Valley Rd.
If you study the webcam picture ( http://mms.nps.gov/mora/cam/east.jpg ), you'll notice that less than half th...

Welcome to the club, and to the PNW...
No need to "excuse" yourself for Whistler and Tiberline trips. During the summer, available snow is wherever you can find it!
BTW: Did you use skins at either resort?

Nice first post and schlepping downhill gear up there shows you have commitment, fortitude and very little sense. ;D You should fit in here just fine.

I hadn’t listened to them in a while but now they are stuck in my head.
I’ll definitely try to summon up the Fugazi energy & determination next time I’m dragging it up a volcano.
Props to ya for keeping-on and summiting in the whiteout!

Glad to see you had some fun down on Shasta. Thanks for the report. Any pics of the patches?

- to start, I was lookin at the # of rpts. for July, '08, and there were 106. This July there were 68. So a lot less reports.
A LOT less snow, too. :'( Even worse in August; the month is half over and there are only half a dozen trip reports so far.
- shoot, that patch looks as if it needs a curvy road sign ! I was just on Shasta and you would dig the patch on Brewer Crk., but it goes straight.
"if only I could figure out how to post pictures" If a computer dinosaur like me can do it, anyone should be able.

Nice report and (derail!) CONGRATULATIONS KAM AND ALLYSON!!
I love the Fugazi soundtrack with the wind noise on top-Very cool video!
It was nice to run into you guys at Cougar Rock camp last week! What a surprise to see Silas pop out of the van!! Allyson and I finished our relaxing honeymoon walk around the Wonderland Trail in about 8 days in near-perfect weather.
Beautiful flowers out there!

Well this incident made it into the annals of the AAC's Accidents in North American Mountaineering, 2009 (p71-2), while acknowledging that there was no accident.
(Every year when it arrives I read this thing cover to cover find myself getting depressed and scared.)

Wow,
I am not sure that I have ever seen so little snow below Coleman Pinnacle. Certainly not this early. I have never seen so much of the small glacier exposed below the pinnacle as can be seen in the distant shot posted.

Hmmm... couldn't find the vid, Timmy. Got a direct link?
It is I. Hello Marcus.
Scott sent me the link to this report, so I thought a Vid was in need.
Find it at http://sstroopers.com
Might not qualify as a Turns all Year vid, but there it is anyway.

Hey Dr telemark, not sure how the Flett will be on the 14th. I'm guessing you should be o.k. since it has cooled off a bunch. Regretably I didn't get that far, but maybe Stugie could give you a better guess than I. Sorry I missed you guys too, some company would've been good for my motivation.
I think of Chris Farley telling me I could be "living in a van, down by the river!"

Sorry we missed you! We were camped on the ridge below Observation Rock, same time frame. Suncups weren't bad in the late, late afternoon.
I'm hoping to "do the Flett" on the weekend of the 14th. I wonder if there will be decent snow left?

I wish that I could get my fellow skiers to wear red since it definitely makes for more interested pictures. ;) I see that Silas has upgraded from pale pink to flamboyant red. Hopefully, I can hook up all of your group before the year is up.
I should mention the main motivation for the trip was to join my friends Kelly and Aaron Miller. They hiked up, along with Kelly's brother and two sons. They beat us up the mountain, and beat us down. Probably because we were too busy being cows, chewing our cud and following each other back and forth across the snow field.
] mooo-ing in jest ..... a new popular BC trend?
If cows...
I could hang out at Mowich till then, maybe if you brought along a couple pints of blood and some new mosquitoe repellant for me!
We headed over to Ptarmigan Ridge and the Sholes Glacier on Monday (BC day)... Great hike, and some decent skiing (about four laps totalling 500vm) from the summit of the First Portal down to a small tarn on the summit's NE side. The runs on the Sholes Glacier from the col between the first and second Portal, as well as snowfields dropping South (towards Rainbow Creek) from the same col also looked pretty good, but we ran out of time to ski them... Lots of glacial ice already exposed... it...
