I ran into you guys on that special day in November. If I remember right, your ring was the only "joy" that happened that day.
Hi Folks - I had the delightful honor of accompanying Jim on this epic ski adventure, and the attached photos will hopefully provide some additional data points on the snow conditions... I hope that you also get to experience the unique Joy of Christmas in July - whoo hoo! coreski
Nice work Silas! Glad you got the goods -- that's a helluva nice corn harvest...

I think next time I try to climb Rainier, I'll climb it and leave the skis at home. That is a lot of work hauling that extra gear up the mountain.
I thought the same thing when I was hauling my skis up- but when I skied down it was totally worth it!
Hi Stim, we must be in perpendicular universes. We spent the vacation in Ellensburg, with other family members hanging out at Deception Pass. Ski ya later!
I headed to Chinook yesterday, Saturday the fourth with my friend Les Gerstmann. At the road we met TAY lurkers Mark and Dale who, for decades, have carried on a tradition of skiing on July 4.
We traversed and booted, 95% on snow, to the corniced ridge west of Naches. PCT is melting out in places. Perfect climbing snow. Nice corn on the steep sections. Suncups were soft but have been softer in the past.
Made it back to the car ski traversing and climbing 100% on snow.

Bob S, Ari Lazier, and I were up there on Friday too. We too saw Amar (who did an amazing day) as we were booting up at 6000 feet. We went as high as the col between Liberty Cap and true summit when time and energy levels were both running low. We started down at around 2:30pm.

Ski conditions on the Inter Glacier a very rough bumpy dirty surface in nearly all areas, and studded with rocks of all sizes especially on the lower half and the runout to Glacier Basin.
We found it not bad descending with overnight packs yesterday around 2PM. Bumps were soft, and following each others tracks also made it not so bumpy. Let's talk it u...
Dunno how fast it will melt. If I were going next weekend, I'd want a backup plan (e.g. buck up and ski the bumps on the s. climb - still prolly better than hiking and may be getting big enough to be like inverse moguls :D), and I'd want to scope the line from down below to see if the central chute was still continuous (easily done on the road from getting a permit at Trout Lake, as well as along FR 23, as long as you have daylight. I'd also look at the traverse at the bottom (go...
Sounds like a nice day for sure. In June we tried to start early but didn't. :)
Would the chutes still be worth it next weekend? It's supposed to be cooler all week.
And do you know which creek you used to hit the ATM trail?
cheers

If that was me, it would definitely be "hospital air". Here's my favorite of the pond skimming photos.

Nice report Amar! Do you think the Interglacier would be decent in 2-3 weeks, or would Fryingpan area be better?
I headed back up there on July 1 to ski the Emmons (see TR). Ski conditions on the Inter Glacier have deteriorated greatly during the past week, with a very...
Nice - thanks for sharing.
The consolidation seems great right now, from what we saw on Adams. I love being able to ski such great snow so late in the day.

Thanks for the report Wolfs. I was hoping to maybe hit Frypan in a little over a week. Better bring the trail shoes.
one day trip from bunny flats, started about 630am, reached Misery Hill a little past noon. My line was a little west of red banks, but east of the exposed chutes. These looked good while climbing, (there was at least one line visible) but Im glad I stayed away, the wind seemed to funnel up the gulch and made for some interesting skiing conditions as the anticipated corn never happened. My first turns were on the steepest and most frozen portion of my line. Under better circumstances (less...
Wow,
Challenging trip, but it looks like the rewards were worth the price of admission!

Nice job; did you do it in a day from Bunny? And where exactly did you enter Avy Gulch?

Nice Keith I'm glad you got that tour in and conditions sound good.
Just wondering what the collective term is for a group of skiing Rangers,
A "pod" of Rangers?
A " cluster" of Rangers?
A "herd" of Rangers?
A" murder" of Rangers? ( a "murder"of crows is the accepted term I believe)
How...
nice job mack- glad you got out there and skied some while enjoying a bit of theater too
A pleasure to read--thanks for your posts!
It wouldn't be the Cascades we love without some of this hate.
Have a great trip Greg!
Isn't a Alluvial a soft soil, gravel mixed with clay in old river valleys?
At least that's what I get reading soils reports.
So you skied on a fan of dirt at Source Lake?
Way to get after it!

Love it - way to go C and dad. C is a ripper for sure.
My son is 10 and he is a Kristoffer, maybe we will see you around some time!

Depending on how well the rangers are armed, perhaps a "battalion" or a "regiment".
There's pretty much always a way. I spent almost all of May in Europe and scored a day skiing in the Pyrenees, a great way to get May turns. Depending on where in Europe you are going, it still might be an option ...
Way to "rack" up the streak instead of "murder"ing it, so you can stay in the "posse".
August will be my challenge this summer: family coming in late July, then off to China with the wife (without skis or snow!) for 8/10-29. I am taking my rock shoes for Hong Kong.... ;)

A Rack O' Rangers. Looks like a great day out Keith. Good report, I really enjoyed the pictures and commentary.
Looks and sounds good---way to get in there. :)
Thanks for the report & nice photos, Keith. How about "pack" or "posse", Scotty?
Way to Lay on McDuff. Next time please invite us.
Cool volcanoes raid! Your N. Sister raid brought back memories of my two tele descents of the Early Morning C. years ago.-- a great route even with that huge/deep slide trench (would not ever want to fall into that thing-- that is for sure!!!!).
That rib separating the Villard from the Early M. C. is a cool ski too; obviously much earlier in the season. The Vallard (skier's left of the rib) is a really cool ski too, with a spicey creep/glide/"schrund" about a quarter...

If one is doing the standard route, the best line off the true summit is a 600 foot NE aspect pitch, skier's left of the standard climb route. Best turns we had all day.
awesome corn once down off the true summit! couldn't have asked for a better trip. looks like the chutes will be melted out within a week or so.... lot's of rock ollies went down!
summit was a zoo- i think between TGR, TAY and NWhikers.net there are 20 or so TR's. kind of amusing! glad everyone got out on a classic mountain ski trip!

Way to get after it!! Christopher rips it too!!
We were also up there on Saturday and could not believe how great the snow was! Perfect timing for this trip!
My wife is still pregnant and I'm already planning this same trip in 2019!! Hopefully sooner!

Don't we all love the perspective in your first photo? ::)

Sounds like a great trip!! Nice job with the late season Cali turns! Can't wait to see the photos :)
Nice job! I skied the NE face last year on almost the same date and there was a lot more snow.
I weaved through the rock towers and exited L, a few hundred feet below where your first photo was taken. It was a bit of a struggle to relocate the climbers' trail.

Groovy! It was the weekend for kids and dogs up there. The pup looked happy as hell. Quite a mob scene on the summit.
Thanks for the report.
I've got an almost 1 month old little guy. We're hoping to get out there soon.
