I was recently nominated Father of the Year, but I humbly pass it off to you Mofro, and the title "Radical 10 year old ski pro" to Christopher!
Definitely best TR. Your son is making some rippin' turns - is he really just 10? Nice work, both of you for getting up and down, and all the way back to the root beer.
I hope I get a chance to share that kind of fun with my kids in a few years. We're having fun as it is just doing ski lessons and riding lifts - it seems to get a little easier every year.

I am a big fan of Father and Son adventures. A lot of kids (and adults) don't have the the mental stamina for long outings, so its great to see a 10 year old making it to the top of an impressive mountain. I started my son on hiking trails as soon as he could walk and on back country ski trails before kindergarten. I believe that he is the youngest at 7 to climb the Golden Ears (the twin peaks straight north of Bellingham) and at 30, he still likes to ski with his old man. Keep up what ever...
BEST. TR. EVER.
This is what skiing is about.

The most inspiring TR I have ever read. As a new father to be in late aug my wife and I have been planning how we are going to get out there with our kids. It is certainly clear that it will just enhance skiing. Nice work kids!

Cool.
My son and I wanted to do it last year, but the long drive kind of put me off early and then the forest fire kind of forced us elsewhere.
I am leaning in that direction with my now 12-year old sometime within the next week. Would like to hit the weather yet avoid the throngs.

As far as I am concerned, this says it all! Great job to the both of you, one for setting the example and the other for his young pluck!
What a Dad! and what a Son! :)

Congratulations cornRIDE.
Did the SW chutes live up to your name?
I have a husky too but he only tours with other people more cool than me although he does allow me to drive him to the TH. Difficult breed! ;)

Awesome road trip, this line on N Sister looks like a great one. Thanks for the TGR report on the Squak too, good route info. Seems like on all the volcanoes I ski you're always there a day or two ahead of me.
That's great to see you and your son climbing and skiing together. He is quite the little shredder and has great form.
Very cool. My son (now 16) and I have a tradition of skiing the Nisqually Chute on Rainier around Fathers Day every year. We started when he was 10 and we haven't missed a year yet. It's always one of my favorite ski days of the year. By that age, he was already faster than me on the way down. Now he's also faster on the way up, too. But he still waits for me.
Nice! I've got a 2-year old and I can't wait to get him out in the backcountry with me when he's older. Thanks for posting!
My new goal: have my daughter (now 5) become the youngest girl to ski SW chutes (then we'll walk up and snowboard it!)
This TR made my day, thanks.

Dave,
Great to hear from you! Nick seems gung ho, even after I drag him through less than ideal trips. Hopefully there are enough good ones to keep his interest up. I think he deserves a good one next time :)
It has been tough with Little League this year. Baseball eats up all sorts of time right at the prime AT time of the year.

Thanks for the report, Kit! Great to see everyone and ski with the group again. Also nice to meet Zap and Jill after having read of their adventures for the past several seasons. (Mmmmm, chocolate cookies...)
Best wishes for a great Summer quarter!

Ouch! That chute at the top looks a little bony compared with the last time we did it. Glad you had a good day.
Nick and Alan, good show! Nick is turning into quite the ski mountaineer.
Nothing on this end, so I have to live it vicariously. Lots of sailing though, which is only a few minutes away, so it works out.

Your photos and destinations are unique as usual. Excellent writing. Looks like an amazing trip.
Big Steve.....nice meeting you guys. Fun adventure. Sled worked much better after I re-tied the main rope half-way down. Stu was happy to buy my burger in Trout Lake. Hope you guys had a great climb.
Nice work on the single push!! I didn't think one could ski through penitentes with such ease as it looks Jeff is doing in the photos. Great capture of the raven at sunrise!
Ahhh, that makes more sense -- I missed the bar on the bindings and thought it was a downhill rig...
Drew, I'm happy to hear that you hooked up with your partner. You rigged a nice sled and we were amused watching you ski down with it. As I stated when you departed the LC camp, Stu owes you a steak dinner for schlepping his gear down the hill. Getting too far right down low is easy to do. Been there. ;D
I love those skis. Rossi Sickbirds with Fritschi Freeride Plus. I have skied over 65 days since Dec. 19th.......everyday with that set-up. They ski anything, and I don't mind them going up. Mainly because I've never had anything else, so I don't know what a Trab feels like. In fact, I spent 10 days in toboggan training this winter taking 200 lb dudes down icy blacks using that same set-up. The highlight of my year was seeing them on the cover of...
I was blinded by your willingness to hump those big-ass skis and bindings to the top :)
If you look closely, you can see I am wearing women's garmonts. It's an interesting point. There is almost no difference between the mens and womens. And I look better in gold, than in purple. Right?
Glad you both made it down okay and had a good first run at Adams -- it's a great one (and your buddy probably got the better line in the chutes). "You never leave your wingman" as they say in Top Gun :)

I skied it for the first time in the summer of '95, and it was like being at a rock concert back then too...
(not to say that the web hasn't had an impact on usage of well-reported-on routes, but from all I've heard Adams has been well-swarmed for some time now...)
Maybe I have just hit it on low traffic before?
You sure did hit it at the right time weatherwise. The cloud deck improved as the day wore on, but not good enough for us to get the full-on view of Eldorado.
Silas, regarding Nick's fat skis, when he stops growing he will get some real touring skis! Those Fritschis are his mother's that I had to swap out to accommodate his new (used) boots that I had to get him this week. His old Fritschis are now on his mom's skis. (She is not too thrill...

Most eloquently written with stunning photos Jason, you are beginning to master the blending of both. Your editing time was well spent as I know how long we sometimes labor over our work. ;)
Congratulations to you both for successfully completing such a long and amazing endeavor and thank you so much for sharing! Well done!! 8)

Silas,
My faded memory of the "hike" is drawing me back to that area! (Kind of like a fly to a light bulb.)
Here are the promised photos. I included one of Nick with his Joe Brown headwear. You seemed to get a kick out of that.
I am hoping Adams SW chutes are in the cards soon.

First photo of Nick at the bottom of Blueberry hills.
Second photo, was our ultimate objective with tracks.

...Passed by Oyvind....Twice.
When the nice lady who was glacading down and asked....are you from Michigan???? I paused (knowing that....I've lived in Oregon for 8 yrs now,....knowing Oyvind started 1:30 hrs behind us, and summited 3 hrs before us)...I proudly replied...yes I'm from "MICHIGAN"...hoping that she would just smile and excuse me as a tourist.
Good to be in the presence of so many wolverines...even though some were Dogs at heart.

Thanks for the TR, photos and turns Lowell. Sherman Peak is a worthwhile side trip on the way to the summit and is very easily accessible from this side of the mountain. Despite all the excellent corn skiing, the highlight for me was traversing the narrow snow ridge above the steam crater. The view down into the crater was wild and the sound of the steam escaping was impressive, just like a gigantic espresso maker. The thin clouds flowing over the ridges were also quite i...
Wow the web seems to make mt Adams popular, 8 years ago it was just me and my dog skiing, Saturday it was like being at a rock concert
Thanks for sharing your story and thoughts during and after the accident. This is a good reminder to me of the inherent risks we all take while skiing, especially given my own propensity to ski alone. Best of luck in your recovery.
Nice trip guys, and some killer photography!
Thanks Guys. Hopefully lots more adventures to come.
BTW, I finally got this story put up on my website.

I am contemplating doing this same trip on July 1st under a bluebird sky. I am concerned about the condition of the snow bridges as I may not be able to organize a party of 3 or more, making any rescue attempts difficult. Do you think that it would be unwise to climb the upper Squak with only one partner?
Everybody's risk assessment is different, but I don't t...
Sweet! Conditions in the chute are starting to look "not so fun" for skiing, but the lower portions are still in good shape.

some pics from Saturday. The Darth Vader looking character in the last photo had an attitude to match his mask and slacks.
Great day on the hill and good, smooth snow up high. I had hopes into cajoling Scott and Aaron into circumnavigating the pyramid after summitting, but by the time we were off we were all pretty beat. Next time I will just try for the circumnav, I think. Bet there's some rad view of the Nooksack Cirque and Tower.
Here's a few more pictures:

Nice! I was up the day before and conditions were similar. Snow's going fast though :'( It'll still be ok for a few weeks....
