Good show again. It was awesome to see you guys headed up just as I skied into Glacier Gap!
That is a fat, fat marmot. Nice work you guys -- beautiful back there.
Update on conditions on Aug. 7...
I went up with alpine gear in my pack and had to put crampons on my leather hiking boots for the entire hike up. Snow was firm, no post-holing, but top few inches were soft and slippery. I chose to avoid the crevasses on the lower Elliot and took the more northerly route down. However, at the two spots circled in red in the pic below, I had to remove my skis to cross rocks and then detour around a crevasse. Snow was nice coming down at 11:30 on a...

Kevin, thanks for the photos and the great literature you composed to go with them.
I'm just glad that I could ski Glacier instead of walking DOWN it. :)

Nice!
Capone on skis! I don't believe it!
Happy birthday, Mr. McAllister. :)
I myself have ridden lifts with alecapone at Stevens when he had a plank on each foot.
And those 2 sticks almost always went the same direction when he asked them to. ::)
Hey Scott, did Snowbell do the Squak with you?

What a great way to spend the evening. Did you bring out the Guides, or other pattern base boards? Nothing more versatile than that for laps on moderate angle and firm conditions, eh?
Love that last pic..
Guides would have skied well in this snow, but the weapon of choice was our conventional AT gear. The upper section of the slope was fairly steep, so...
Nice pictures - glad to see the route is holding up well!
Nice report, and good conditions indeed. Makes me want to leave the southern Willamette Valley and head up for a day or two. Ale - I didn't know you skied - nice work!
Edit: Ale - I just read your post on splitboard.com -too funny!

Ive been using the 'up-graded' Salomon snowblades. These skis, originally made in the 50's (where-else) the Alps, were called 'firn-gliders'. This past spring, a guy regularly comes from Utah to Mammoth ski area for the corn season. One day he had his Bigfoots with bright colored stretch-wear. I've seen him on 120's, as well. Those looked real sweet. As long as it's soft, the shorties work just fine. The steepest I've skied on the blades i...
Thanks for the TR's Amar. It convinced me to take my 12 yr old brother up there to ski off the summit via the Squak last Sunday.
Nice!

Nice report and photos Amar. I was just looking at your website in awe of the vert you have been putting in this spring.

Tara and I tried the Squak on Tuesday the 3rd.
We turned around a liitle above 7000' due to thunder and lightning.
Just when the snow started to get good. :'(
Maybe we'll have to give it another try next week.

Nice work guys. Don't forget to put a September ski of the Coleman-Deming on your calendars now!
Nice pics!
That is a great run. I am surprised that there is still that much snow in that basin. Here is what it looked like about a week before the road opened..July 17...

Mac's telling no lies,

We 3 reached the top

A long walk for sure to climb Glacier.

Thanks guys, for the info and the pictures.
In the 15 - 20 years that I've been skiing that line I have never skied it in August. I have skied it in July in much worse shape that what it shows in Carl's pictures. What a great snow year :)

Skied the chute yesterday. (Friday)
Skiing this August makes this our (Carl & Tara) first time skiing year round!
Thanks to everyone for their helpful and inspiring trip reports.

being a surfer in So-Cal for quite some time; I really liked your dusk-patrol term. I've seen the mtn riders use the term dawn-patrol, but I think it's a hands-down surfer's term - as one can paddle out, before the sun has risen to get some early light with the waves. cool report, to get some turns !
There was good snow on the Spur, but it runs out onto the glacier closer to crevasse activity than the Dome run. There were people on the ridge, but I did see anyone drop in.
Take a look at AlenL's report. Looks like they went further up the spur before crossing than we did.

I was in Bend that weekend, my husband was running the Cascade Lakes Relay.
I should have brought my skis instead of shopping and floating the river.
Looks like you had a good ski.

Impressive Alisa :D
You are certainly honing your poetic skills.
that is a pretty verse, but I cant take credit
it is from Brigadoon...
Nice find. Maybe it will snow again before all the snow melts.

Here is some lyrics to go with that sunset:
The mist of JULY is in the gloamin', and all the clouds are holdin' still.
So GIT YER SKIS and let's go roamin' through the heather on the hill. 8)

I love that last photo! Really captures summer skiing, ontop of a ridge, big pack, no snow in sight!
Sounds like a fun trip.
Any 1000-ft patches left on Cooper Spur....? I haven't been to OR in a while and might be down that way in a couple weeks.

I suspect you have had the Bigfoots for some time. I would like to know where one could find something even remotely similar.
Yes, they are the classic pink-toe model. They aren't even really mine, long term loan from my brother because I have a big garage full of ski crap already... Apparently, Bigfoots might be sought after but are elusive - the entirety of ebay (U...

B/C grooming for the cups is some dedication - I've just let loose sluffs release
...gotta remember to smile next time.
I've got to do some Patent work before I can talk about it. But it works so I'm happy.
Nearly forgot to say Happy Birthday to Lisa, it was a laugh touring with you
...and always nice to meet you Ken, always a pleasure to meet a scientist on a glacier!

Hi Lisa: I enjoyed meeting you and Jake that day. It was about a 1000 vertical foot drop into Cowlitz.

Sweet!
what elevation where you able to ski to?
Right around 5,000'. Check out the Google maps satellite view; the snow cover shown is almost exactly how it is right now down into the Grouse drainage.
Nice Brian,
That's an ambitious outing after a grueling day at work. :D
Great pictures too.

Jake was pretty happy with them and said he had a few minor tweaks to make and then on with the patent I guess.
I have used the Bigfoot fern gliders skiing Shuksan back in the '90's and would love to find some again. They were fun little things, a foot outlined in pink as I recall.

How much walking did you do to get to the white stuff?
From the parking lot we headed pretty directly to the summit. It took 2 hours to reach the summit where we put skis on. I think it's about 3,000 vertical from the lot to the summit.
The main snow fields extended to just above the Pine Marten lodge, so the total continuous snow was around 1,500 I thin...
Good to see our turns still good a week later! Nice!
Nice pictures Matt. Glad to hear that you had fun and survived the mosquito onslaught.
It's surprising to have so much snow left at Diamond this late...

Hey, I think you used the "secret" Sunrise Stash! 8) It's right below the corner from Frozen Lake by the return trail junction, correct? We used that 2 months last year---woo hoo
Cool shots, looks like I'm really touring. Sounds like a good tour.

OK, I would like some details! 34 miles round trip is way too far to carry your boots but way too far to wear them as well. Which was it and what do your feet look like now?
I think the pack animal might be the way to go (not being an animal person though, this is pure conjecture - they don't run on camping fuel and 2 stroke oil do they?).
Did you happen to get a card from...
