Forgot to mention... There was a guy we passed on the hwy leaving Baker (which I labeled in our pics as the "Bad Ass Cascade Ski Machine" hauling his skis & gear behind his road bicycle on a trailer. Shot the breeze just for 10 seconds as we passed but didn't get his (your) name. Nice to meet you!

Nice shots.  Where was the serac?
Nice Matt, hope you get some decent riding.  I'll be on Baker Saturday and Sunday.
Looks like fun - snow is still holding up well on the dome.  Heading into Bear Cr. on Diamond on Saturday afternoon for some Sunday riding if you're interested Buell.

I'll second that Mack, but I won't even try to make a lyric out of it.  ;) You have made some great trips, congratulations.

you guys crack me up .. nice poems .. i was wondering where the gp trs were .. were there many people up there?

I'll post more after I recover.  What have I started with these corny limericks?!
All right, a TAY poetry slam!  Well done, everybody.

Great to hear you made it up there Mack!

Triumph on all five pumice piles
Up and down the volcanoes he styles
First it’s ski pons a gripping
Then skins off and ripping
Hours of grunts, and then minutes of smiles
Sounds like conditions held up for you.  Nice!
Yeah, should still be good up there... probably the best snowpack I have seen this late in the year on Snowdome in 10 years... must have been that overcast June we had...???
I hate wearing pants, but I observe local laws at all times.

Nice TR. I like the combination of vivid green and vivid white in your photos.
yaa, bike shorts - kinda dorkie;  better than pants
you should send the chute pic into Backcountry
Nice work, Merk. 3 more months to year 5!
It was a great climb even if we could not make the summit.  That mush layer is deep and scary, especially right over a gaping shrund.

Brian is great to climb with.  Pure stoke on the mountain.

Thanks for the contact ale!
In fact, I may have a spare Riva Z cable, if I haven't thrown it out.  Let me check and I'll PM you if I do.
Ya said ya were gonna do it and ya did.  Good job.
the corn goodness,  its actually past corn,  summer goodness

Mostly a mt bike day.  We rode Ranger-Palisades-SunTop down near the Buck Cr Airstrip on hwy 410.

I had hoped I'd have enough legs to go grab a run at Chinook after biking.  So I left the truck at the pass about 5pm and started booting.  Did a couple 400' laps and booted back up, before the final 200' down to the pass.  The snow was surprisingly firm and the trees we...
One more photo - looking up to the ridge from the east bowl.
Oh, did I mention I blew a binding near the summit?  I knotted off the cable and fitted a runaway strap in its place.  It skied nearly 5k'!
Anyone have a spare Riva-3 Cable?
Great looking day!

Glad to see you guys hooked up with Buell. Good guy, and I figured you might travel well together.

Liz and I ran into you on our way down in Spray Park.  Glad you were able to make a go of it so late in the day, and nice to meet you!

The views are definitely the draw right now.  I always think of it as hiking with a sweet ride down at this time of year.
Amar got me back up there too the day before you. What a year!.
It was really nice meeting you guys. Here's a photo. Hope to run into you again.

All in all a great day.  The hike to snow is pretty short (probably less than 1.5 miles), and crevasse danger is minimal to the top of Snow Dome - plus the warm weather kept my skiing-in-flowered-shorts streak alive ;)

Sounds like a good day Brian, seems like this season just doesn't want to end.  :D  Before we know it, winter will be here again.<...
It was great to meet up with you guys, I thoroughly enjoyed skiing together.
What a rare treat to have the road open all the way to the end and still find good snow conditions in the chutes.  ;D

Sounds like you guys made a good choice for round two, wish my sense of responsibility hadn't been quite so strong.  ;)

An added treat to the day was seeing a Black Bear sow with her cub in a field of wild flowers above the Hurricane Ridge road. The only let down was disc...
Picture update. Note Unicorn Glacier still skiable !

On the way back I saw some skiers making kickers on the slope south of Naches. They said a couple of skiers had headed up to the ridge so I thought I would run up and join them for a nice, but short run down. They were fellow TAY posters. Hopefully they will add some pics.

Keith - great to meet you yesterday. It was fun watching you 'run'...
thats a great rpt ! D cups, and some rays should get rid of some grumpiness
- some epic photos, especially the last one !
Thanks for the report.
We're headed there tomorrow!
I need a mtn bike....NOW. Sweet day.
8)  You must have enjoyed the full moon rising as well.  Nice.

Did you cross Elliot Creek or on the lower Elliot Glacier? How was the crossing?

Go up the moraine to the East of the creek (seen in the first photo) until you hit a large cairn.  Descend from there to the base of the glacier and ascend one of three snow gullies to the flat section on the Elliot.  From there it's pretty straight forward.

And now (musical allusion time) I find myself "praying for the snow to hide the clover..." and waiting for that gracious host, old man winter. (It's summer, not spring, that "hangs me up the  most.")

Length of Day: 15h 12m. Tomorrow will be 2m 28s shorter.
the gate is still locked at the lot above the visitors center. We parked at the visitors center. The road is clear past the last switchback before the lot at Artist Pt. It's quite a mess in that lot though. I doubt it'll be clear of snow any time soon.
How far up the road could you drive?  Ski area, visitors center, Austin Pass, Artist Point, or....?
Thanks for the report, yes it is the most snow this time of year in at least a decade.

I probably should have gone to Paradise. But I decided to head to Chinook and take the skis for a long walk up  Tahtlum Peak (aka Peak 6567, Zaps' Mountain) to bag a summit and ski north facing snow.

After 2 hours of hiking on the largely melted out PCT I reached the summit and marveled at the views. Then down to ski. Looked at my watch. Skied to the bottom. Looked at my w...

Sherman also had wind above 8000', 20mph or so, and it nicely preserved the perfect corn for our late arrival on the summit where the snow was fairly stiff. From 10000-8000' the breeze was comfortable and the turns effortless on a smooth firm surface with an inch of buttered corn. There was a little grabbiness from 8000-6000', then excellent consolidated snow with small soft su...
