Aha. I heard that hoot! I was having too much fun to kill my speed. Being solo and having no real whiteout navigation experience I made sure that it would be clear. Also, freeze/thaw snow doesn't usually ski too well without sunshine. I use a GPS but need to do more work with a map and compass. I guess the thing to do is to make sure that you have your location and altitude down solidly if it looks like the snow or fog is about to roll in. With good vis and fresh GPS batteries it's eas...
I hooted once as you skied by. We were ~100m to skiers left of your descent, ~800' above Pebble Creek. Great timing; things got a little slower and punchier as the sun did its work.
Another day or two of sun probably won't hurt this little dump of snow very much. With coverage as amazing as it is this year, it's very unlikely that travelers will obliterate all the good snow.
The coming weather system will change things. If you're heading up into more w...

Silas, did I miss you guys when I was on my way down? I'm Jonathan's friend, Josh.
I just moved out here recently and when I saw the forecast I knew that it was time to bust out the skis. I left the parking lot at 7:30 and from the bottom of the snowfield to about 3/4 of the way to the camp I saw absolutely no one. It was almost a little creepy. I was worried that it wouldn't refreeze well but it was decently firm even at 10am. The corn was just ripening up nicely when...

Great day! For September, the snow was superlative. Go get it while it's good (and before the wind starts rocking Saturday). The 2.5" of water equivalent is up there where wind didn't rake it off, but there's a soft but supportable warming/rain crust 1-3" down. Some limited slide evidence up high, and we felt tiny settlements while skiing. That said, many slopes at ~11k looked smooth and inviting. Paradise Gl. did too; some cracks may now be buried. Signs of a crac...
Hey man. My fiance and I were out there on Saturday. We made it as far as the first run you can see in your first photo where you can hike above the trail and ski way below. Then 2 more on the way back to the car. You just can't complain about skiing in August.
Well, Gee, Zee, do you ever drive up to a mountain to hike or climb in the summer? Perhaps you should just hole up in your hidey hole...year round. Peace!
Lowell's picture and article got me going again. Perhaps outdoor people and more specifically people on this website should think about their behaviors and actions and the effects upon our environment. I've often thought what an environmental waste it is to drive up the mountain, often several hours, to get August, September turns, ect in marginal conditions when you would have stayed home had this not been your holy quest of turns-all-year. We're killing the very thing we love...
Great report.
That page about the Helm Glacier recession makes me think of the White Chuck Glacier on Glacier Peak. It has similar elevation and angle and is also disappearing very fast. From this story:

No cracks. One appears to be forming at the spot around 9k where the dirt trail hits the snowfield proper. As the blog page on Mt Rainier had said on Friday, the Muir Snowfield is in great condition as far as coverage goes. No bare ice anywhere that I could see
Any cracks visible on the snowfield proper? Big snow year or no, this is the time of year that hikers start dropping into holes....
Wow, thanks for the timely report and nice pix. Nice to know that 1k or close to it is still available (or was, 3 days ago). Sometimes there is a good snow traverse high on the NW side of the ridge that can get you most of the way to the basin below CP, looks like some of that might be intact, great for cutting down the hike.
It is easy to answer. The season does not end.

Nice work with the trip.
This would make a great Random Tracks topic...I said "new season!" at first, then I remembered I've had fresh tracks in every month of the year except June, and now I'm confused. ???

Question is, does this count as the end of last season or the start of the new season, since there was new snow?? ;)

and with that Pea Soup that settled in on our descent, well, that made it less desirable.
Wise choice, Scotteryx! - Ron & Jeannette & I hiked up toward the foot of the Paradise. But when we saw the fog rolling in, we did a quick transition and linked a few turns. Then hiked out ahead of the weather. The flowers are really pretty in shrin...
definitely a relatively easy hike in for 2 days of skiing!!
Looking more into it, apparently Helm is one of the faster receding glaciers in North America.. at least I can tell my kids that I skied it before it completely vanished? kinda sad

I'm currently residing in Tennessee, and the second picture just made me very homesick for the PNW. Thanks for the report.

Thought about heading over to the Paradise Glacier after watching TNT's video from last week.
I try not to descend a glacier that I have not walked up before, and with that Pea Soup that settled in on our descent, well, that made it less desirable.

The Paradise Glacier was in fine shape on Saturday. We booted up to Muir, rode some of the craptastic sun cups at the top, then hopped onto the Paradise Glacier for some nice, smooth turns. We didn't see a single skier or boarder all day, just hordes of climbers and day hikers.
good work scott..........ignorance is bliss
Is it just me or is South Hill ever expanding with more strip malls with Nails, Teriyaki and Check cashing places?
Wait a minute now ! They also have some nice tanning salons.
Tip: to avoid some of that turn right when leaving 512 after puyallup go south on 94th to t bone end at 152 nd then left back to Meridian.
The only reason to go on MEridian is to stop at Los Amigos Taco Autobusa. Thier Pollo Asad...

There are parallel arterials to the west that bypass the worst of the 'South Hell' gridlock, but for a somewhat less ugly & often faster route, stay on I-5 southbound thru Sarcoma to the 512 freeway. From the far right I-5 offramp lane...

I've seen that sign before! Seems a little odd when you are skiing and see it...Took a picture of it.
Most excellent adventures. Very funny and honest blog, but I can't believe that no one in the whole group has ever forgotten their ski boots. Or maybe just forgot the liners and insoles. Or remembered the boots but they were the tele boots and the skis were the AT ones. ...Maybe when you get more experience....
on the smooth snow pic, lookers left, it looks like there are a fair amount of inverted tracks. thanks for the rpt
Welcome BF-ers! Wait, Marcus, can I say that out loud on this site?
Funny stuff - we've all done healthy portions of the same tom foolery. See you up there!

Good shot of the Coe icefall on HOOD!!! Thanks...
I think we saw you heading up the Scott Paul when we were coming down on a family hike, I was jealous. :)
Hey Kristoffer-you gonna make turns all year too?
You sure covered a lot of territory on the "21st". ;)
Nice Oyvind -- amazing coverage this summer...
Good dog-skiing shot. Ptarmigan's on my September list too.
