BCFC debated the concept of what a turn all year is this week at Ptarmigan. We have some theories and some disagreement.

2/3 of the group says sand is out and only 1/3 thinks it counts. To some agreements:

1) Gravity fed movement (that makes in a downhill sport). Note this is a gravity pulling you in toward the earth, Newton Apple kind of gravity. The moon's gravit...
Great getting out with you again Sam.  Definitely glad I opted out of work to go get some September turns.

Here's to hoping it's not too painful to hold my breath for early Oct. pow turns!

Well, I'm only now transitioning to taking the reins of TAY, so I'm not as acquainted with the original choices.  I think it's a combination of a few things:

- load times in the age of slower connections was definitely a factor

- a desire to encourage a little more selection with the photos, rather then just an infodump of every shot you took during a trip
I liked the TR and hope to ski there someday; Zap was near there last July.  Any slope left in September takes skill.
TRs here aren't just for the Greenwater locals  ;) and I bet Joe would check it out under the right conditons!

love that shot of y'all so close to the goats....    seems i always see them out in that area but have never managed to get that close......    nice tr

Thanks, my friend Ben added a few more shots over on my site if you're interested.
Sick shot with the goats.Great view as well of the Park headwall.
Seems like the goats like this area.
I guess that it's all one season if you go month after month.I just have that feeling skiing in Sep that it feels like early season with cooler temps. Also I started TAY in October. So that kind of signifies the start of another season.

I'm just curious was it a matter of trying to limit how many images were hosted on TAY, or an attempt to keep load times short in the age of dial up? Something else?
Nice shots!

The photo posting guidelines are looser than they have been in the past -- I haven't made any official changes to site "policy" at this time.

I'd encourage you to add additional images via the thumbnail "IMG" tags in the posting window (second button to the right of "Add Image Tags".

EDIT...

Hmmm, well, that thumbnail tag still isn't working -- odd.  I'll look into that.

bewildered, great term
is it early, or late season. still summer. looks like an excellent spot. last photo epic
you guys are pretty dorky. so the one guy asks about it, and then the next guy comments about it. I just love to ski, & I grew up skiin one of the best mtns around, Mammoth. So I'm damn good at it.
your second photo is sweet - goin across the fall-line

I want to keep it a secret.

Oh...Please, oh.. please ohplease.
I need a reason to drive 13hrs for 175vft of pink algae supcups.  ;)
I want to keep it a secret. But its called Ski Heil pk.! The ridge extending SW has Eagle Pk., Ski Heil Pk, Diller and Tehama. Ski Heil means good luck !which is what we got, for Sep. turns (down South). When I get a laptop, I should be able to show pictures, next summer. The slope was very pink.
September turns:  check.
Which aspect or peak?
Hey, Ron, how about moving randerson's most illuminating post to the recent TAY definition thread ~ we would not want to lose track of such gravitas..  like, he even got Newton spelled right, and everything..

Randerson, as to your point #4, yes, a gentleman's agreement has been achieved after lengthy negotiations.  Please see Kneel Turners 'TAY' thread on the main page.

I didn't think that the surface was corn . . .  not sure what to call it, but it seemed to me to be not even proto-corn yet, a wet granular glue of some sort which needed a few more days of sun to become true corn. Some of the stickiest, highest-friction skinning I've done in a long time....

Hmm, I did not find sticky, high friction snow on the way up.   ...
Silas, nice meeting you again.  Given a little reflection I remember meeting you at a Crystal fest about five years ago, and again this spring at Alpental when I failed to see your skins that I must have walked within two feet of.  Jim, I don't remember if I've met you before but it's good to start connecting real people to internet trip reports.  And Amar, great to meet you.  Thanks for all of your detailed reports and weather links.

As for the skii...
Agreed.  Thanks Mack - and Kneel.
I can't comment on the relative greatness of this September's skiing, cause yesterday on Muir was my first. And it was great.

I left the car around 12:30 and my high point was in your second picture, Amar. (A couple of those tracks are mine.) I concur on the snow, which was pleasant but a little heavy in this section. I liked the lower part of the run best, where the new snow was getting thin.

I was using waxless skis with experimental home-tweaked bindings, we...

Jim and I agreed it was the best September skiing either of us have experienced in North America.
. . .
From 9800' to 7500' was 1-4" smooth clean corn . . .
. . .
Now let the naysayers tell us about the better North American Septembers they remember?

I'll take that challenge, Silas!

We were going to go that way on Saturday until the clouds swooped in big time. It looks like you had the better day.

This TR morphed into a RT, so thanks Kneel for starting a new clean thread.
"NO SOUP FOR YOU!"

Fun read. Thanks for the report, and good call on the 13th bluebird conditions... Silas' report verifies your prediction.
Nice Silas! This is encouraging having just read wolfs Muir whiteout report from the 12th day of the 9th month, aka yesterday as it stands today.

Dude, you're an animal dude. Retirement looks great. ~24 years and counting for me, unless of course that old, mangled mega lotto ticket riding in my wallet is worth more than the lint balls it is currently producing. Probably time to find a barcode reader for that one.

Keep the TAY TR's coming Silas.

I have been thinking of heading into the Coleman seracs to do some topped rope ice climbing practice.  How is...
Good one......

Well, Mack, and friends, I've been to Namibia, and I've skiied sand dunes (not there), and while it's a blast, I think the criteria (for TAYing) has to include being on snow (otherwise skateboarding, land-luge, etc.  could count).  However, must it include strapping on or standing on something between you and the snow?  Really?  Is there a minim...

Thanks for the encouraging report - I'm heading there next week, but may not ski.

I suggest even just throwing em in the car, in case; there is a sweet line we hit that goes down into the valley, starting at the connection of Ptarmigan and Chain Lakes, i.e. ~20 minute walk from the parking lot (can see the line from the lot). Super easy to get to and so fu...
Congratulations!

Saw you in the parking lot when you came out.  We came in at about 7 pm and cheated in September turns - 2 runs of a total of 150 vertical !  A busy September made a sure thing necessary.  We spent the day on the coleman glacier doing research on ice anchors in glacier ice.  Great views till about noon when it clouded up.  Baker looked beautiful with new snow.  Saw some skiers ascending Heliotrope.

Congrats on year 1!  I think that long line you guys did has been informally named the "Goat Throat" by either Jimmy (Lordhedgie) or Telemon, after goats were seen in that area several weeks in a row.

Thanks for the encouraging report - I'm heading there next week, but may not ski.
That turned out to be quite the day and a bit longer than I expected. It went from good to so bad it's good. Either way equals good. Andrew was really sore on the ride home.

I can't wait for the real winter to roll in!
Okay, I lied, I do have photos... but they're not good.  Here's the best:

In spite of the visibility, that was a super fun day.  It was terrific to see all the snow fill-in that's occured in the last couple weeks.  Skiing down from Muir with no sun cups, running water, mud, grit, etc. was cool.  Around 2500 ft continuous vertical in September is pretty great in my book.

Lordhedgie- great to meet you and the rest of the group.  Thank you for letting me tag along!   Welcome to WA, Josh and Susan, you are going to love it here.  Andrew I'll be intere...

I love it, but it raises an interesting question. This is pretty much the least amount of snow you could possibly ski to get your turns, but would it count if you got some turns on something other than snow? I was in Idaho this weekend and hiked up some pretty cool sand dunes and found myself wishing I had my skis. Do sand turns count?

Yup

Oh, that St. Pauli girl with her bulging bubbles!
If this micro-patch trend strengthens we'll have to carry skis, boots AND a bouldering mat.

Sorry about this one:

I've skied monthly for many good days
In sunshine and blizzards and haze
The girl from St. Pauli
Has followed my folly
And I love sliding on her snack trays!
