I was gonna ask if the little tongue at the top would go, and am happy to know you actually were headed for it. Worthy objective, getting out like that, IMHO.
Thanks Tim!

Sounds good....

To be able to ski early September, it does not get much better.....

Also not included in the JOM was the extra vertical feet hiked after the patch ski to scramble up a nearby summit [might have counted it though had I packed my skis up to the summit  :)  ]

That makes sense (as much as any TAY calculation can make sense).  Last weekend when Mack, Telemander, and I scrambled to the top of Coleman Pinnacle (no skis, obvio...

Would that have unacceptably increased the joy-o-meter?
  yes. ;)

Actually, on the approach I thought the nano-patchlet might be the only option for snow turns in the area, until the larger patch emerged into view after topping the last crest.  The 20 turns down the larger patch felt like a lot for September  ;D  No rock removal necessary, j...
Nice meeting you guys as well!  That's a bummer about the kite though, better luck next month!

I was perplexed, or curious.  Clearly we TAYers have our own definitions and standards for skiing, for streaks, and for many other activities and values we have in our lives.  That is a good
thing (though we should minimize harm, respect others, blah blah).  Shaping and expressing our own selves is at the core of what appeals to me about being in the hills.
My streak would be 2 years longer than it is if I hadn't blown off bad Septembe...
It wasn't lost on some of us that you refer to this trip as an early season outing.  Family and friends and a bit of fresh..  Does it get much better?

???

Mack, perplexed?  Or in total disagreement?   ;D    You know, i queried the tribe on this last month ~ more in fun than seriously.  A couple said yea, one said WTF, and you called it a slippery slope...  Frankly, I have to agree with all.  That said, I've also 'skiied' the Nisqually chutes on only my boots.  And sand dunes on real skis, and...
how long did it take you to clear the rocks off?  I guess that's why you didn't look for a larger patch...?  ;D
Thanks for the day....

Fun as always, and good to see great coverage out there.....

Ron J, what funny little skis you got!!!

Thank you.
nice "illuminated" 8's through the mtn dust !  I did some sweet 8's on Lassen, in Aug. (w/out the dust). I love that cond. (good for base structure, whatever that is)
Good to chat with you guys on the way up - funny we are on the same month!  We bailed at 8700 as we realized the clouds were marching upwards at our pace...the snow was better than expected and the winds were light (which was sad for Steve's kite...pretty sad sight seeing a kite plopping to the ground) - who needs sunshine!!  Would take those conditions over board swallowing suncups and bare ice any day....

Nice job boys.
I love the JOM on the watch.
Only Kam would have that custom on a watch. Gotta have a pretty positive mind set when it is below 1%.
Thanks for TR...I had a hunch that it was not too cupped out...
Thanks for the TR...that looks really good!
A few point and shoot pix, most were fogged out.

Why not shoot for 50% JOM?  If would have only taken 20 laps.  I know, such a pain, putting the skins on, skinning up, taking them off ...

So, if you only ski uphill, do you get a total of negative v.f. and still count it for a month?
For me uphill ski only wouldn't count as my definition for "turns" remains one turn left and one turn right (in downhill direction on skis), but for some that count uphill only as 'turns' it would seem possibe to have a 'negative' joy-0-...
James got the TR up before I even got to the Kingston ferry!  It wa a pretty mild day for all the clouds and precipitation.  We had the whole spectrum, from 100 yards vis. to brief crisp views of Baker, and from sunbreaks to graupel & a handful of snowflakes to a few raindrops.
We got 5 runs of varying lengths and "traversy-ness".  Watch out when trying to keep your speed up crossing those runnels!  :'(
Since the Ptarm...
Glad you got out there. Sorry i missed it, it sound like it was a fun day.

That is so lame it's awesome.

...but no lamer than me claiming 300 ft of boot turns for August...   at least he schlepped more weight uphill..
That is so lame it's awesome.
Chris,
Good day out indeed.  Glad to see you made the most of it.  Been swamped lately, but Scotsman has motivated me to TAY, so keep in touch...  I need September.  Keepin' my hopes up for another late summer "powder" day.
This certainly soldifies and verifies the "freak" in your TAY moniker.

Merit badge earned.
Funny, Chris.  I walked with a friend up to Snow Lake at a rather plodding pace the other day, which meant I had lots of time to contemplate those tiny, filthy, crusted and cupped patches of remnant snow across the valley.  At one point I heard myself musing about some people I know who favor *skiing* such patches for the sheer joy of accumulating the lowest possible ratio of vertical footage to exertion.  It made perfect sense to me, but she expressed a bit of perplexity.

Glad you&...
Nice!

No doubt a little known talent you and the Kamster developed together, undercover.
Also saves the 2 hr drive and slightly longer hike to get to the Paradise patch.
One can never cease to marvel at the ingenuity of modern man when faced with today's challenges.
High Five.
Scott, John, err... Alecapone- thanks for being game to take the skis for a walk.

Silaswild- Definitely thought of the going the easy way to get some turns...instead decided I had to pay a visit to my other volcano (so that she would not get jealous of me spending all my time with Rainier). Plus the skis needed to go for a walk!

Mack- thanks for the inspiration over the past few months

here are a few more pics of the day

Great "mistake", Scott, and good to see Lyles back in action.
Man, that's quite the September coverage... Nice work Scott!  You too John! ;)
That looks beautiful, what a year it has been for summer skiing, and the Squak has been the crown jewel.  I knew it would be good, but took the lazy choice and drove to 5400' yesterday.  Way to get it!
Aha. I heard that hoot! I was having too much fun to kill my speed. Being solo and having no real whiteout navigation experience I made sure that it would be clear. Also, freeze/thaw snow doesn't usually ski too well without sunshine. I use a GPS but need to do more work with a map and compass. I guess the thing to do is to make sure that you have your location and altitude down solidly if it looks like the snow or fog is about to roll in. With good vis and fresh GPS batteries it's eas...
I hooted once as you skied by. We were ~100m to skiers left of your descent, ~800' above Pebble Creek. Great timing; things got a little slower and punchier as the sun did its work.

Another day or two of sun probably won't hurt this little dump of snow very much. With coverage as amazing as it is this year, it's very unlikely that travelers will obliterate all the good snow.

The coming weather system will change things. If you're heading up into more w...
Silas, did I miss you guys when I was on my way down? I'm Jonathan's friend, Josh.

I just moved out here recently and when I saw the forecast I knew that it was time to bust out the skis. I left the parking lot at 7:30 and from the bottom of the snowfield to about 3/4 of the way to the camp I saw absolutely no one. It was almost a little creepy. I was worried that it wouldn't refreeze well but it was decently firm even at 10am. The corn was just ripening up nicely when...
Faaaantastic... a beautiful sight.
Great day! For September, the snow was superlative. Go get it while it's good (and before the wind starts rocking Saturday).  The 2.5" of water equivalent is up there where wind didn't rake it off, but there's a soft but supportable warming/rain crust 1-3" down. Some limited slide evidence up high, and we felt tiny settlements while skiing. That said, many slopes at ~11k looked smooth and inviting. Paradise Gl. did too; some cracks may now be buried. Signs of a crac...
Hey man.  My fiance and I were out there on Saturday.  We made it as far as the first run you can see in your first photo where you can hike above the trail and ski way below.  Then 2 more on the way back to the car.  You just can't complain about skiing in August.
Well, Gee, Zee, do you ever drive up to a mountain to hike or climb in the summer?  Perhaps you should just hole up in your hidey hole...year round.  Peace!
Lowell's picture and article got me going again.  Perhaps outdoor people and more specifically people on this website should think about their behaviors and actions and the effects upon our environment. I've often thought what an environmental waste it is to drive up the mountain, often several hours, to get August, September turns, ect in marginal conditions when you would have stayed home had this not been your holy quest of turns-all-year.  We're killing the very thing we love...
Great report.

That page about the Helm Glacier recession makes me think of the White Chuck Glacier on Glacier Peak. It has similar elevation and angle and is also disappearing very fast. From this story:

No cracks. One appears to be forming at the spot around 9k where the dirt trail hits the snowfield proper. As the blog page on Mt Rainier had said on Friday, the Muir Snowfield is in great condition as far as coverage goes. No bare ice anywhere that I could see
