Well, I'm pretty excited about all this snow. I'm not used to seeing snow totals like these out of a single storm... well, ever.. much less from the first storm of the year.

Welcome to the Cascades Sam. Especially Baker where the numbers in a storm can get mind blowing deep!
Sam, the ski area's not open and the telemetry site is not working (imagine my surprise).  Can you give one or two estimated snowdepths with their location or elevation and time of day?  I'm thinking about Wednesday.  Thanks much.

Mark
Wow...that's even more snow than I figured was falling. Sweet!!!
Are those your 138's?
Looks epic, well played.
I seriously considered a sick day today for precisely this purpose.
Letty and I were just admiring your fluffy adventure today.  Nothing ventured, nothing gained - great call.

well that looks okay for october :)    how deep was it?

i'll keep my fingers crossed the pass stays open till the weekend...

18" generally, 24" in others, even 30" in some places. No rocks or logs were hit but you didn't want to open it up too much.
You have to know where the grassy slopes are and where the unicorns graze. ;...

Thanks for the welcome, yesterday was actually my first turns-all-year experience.  I've now been skiing since Nov. 2009 with a tally of 79 days so far in my first year.  Bring on year # 2.  I think we may have passed you on our way up Merk, by the time we were skiing down, there was just enough snow to get a couple of turns, and the paved section was almost like a groomed run (with concrete just below the surface).  I'm gettin stoked!!
We went up to see for ourselves as well, and yup! Big snow and even bigger wind.  The 3 of us skinned up to near Pan Point before turning back.  The skins never came off.  But it was great to see old man winter once again and tool around in the snow.  Gonna have to claim my October turns next weekend...
Glad you were able to get out and check what many of us suspected. Welcome to TAY Jmiller it's good to have you.
Thanks for the investigative photos and input there, E_N.
On our climb up the snowfield a giant lenticular cap showed itself a few times.  Didn't look like a very good time.

In the late morning/ early afternoon we made two laps from about 8500 and 8000.  It was a bit difficult to tell how much snow was falling and what was being transported by the wind.  A thick windloaded slab of new snow was beginning to form on the west edges of the ridges and made for some great October powder.   Several hundred feet of 8+ inch snow held steadily...
It looks like wednesday will be good.

Hopefully someone posts so us weekenders know how this storm pans out up there.

It was a fine weekend and your drive must have been heinously long.....

So sorry that I missed out.  All day I was cognisant of where I was not.

Did you note the locations of the crevasses?  It's gonna start dropping snow here pretty soon so we'll need your keen memory to be safe while poaching powder on the Paradise.

I am getting anxious, this is the longest that I have gone without skiing in several years.

it was an awesome day! a pleasure to get some riding in on such a stand out october day.

i was curious what it was looking like on the paradise glacier. thanks for posting the picture. is there anything steeper over there to ride than the muir snowfield?

Yes, it was a great day to be outdoors.  :)

We stayed skiers right most of the way down,...
sure was a gorgeous day!  We ended up not leaving vancouver until about 9pm on saturday night and camped up at Twin Lakes.. woke up to the north face covered in snow!  Definitely not enough to ski, but sure did get us excited :)
Coleman region was beautiful.. loads of people, but the snow was covered with up to 5cm of snow in areas.  We skied one of the larger patches near the end of the hike before hitting the north side, which was fully blanketed with new snow.  Dust o...
Ooohhh, very nice! I was enticed to stay closer to home for cycling and climbing but certainly hope to join you next time.

ps44-

we we're the two splitboarders and a skier wearing orange and blue. stayed on the muir snowfield the whole ascent and were curious about descending the paradise glacier.

couldn't believe how the weather held up. sunshine and NO WIND!

good soft turns for sure.
Excellent Gary!  Looking forward to heading out your way sometime this winter.
Nice work guys; I wish I could have joined up.  Your Paradise turns look a little softer than my Heliotrope turns were on Saturday.
Thanks ps44 -- the thumbnail function isn't working at the moment.  Still trying to figure it out.
I think I saw you guys, couldn't quite catch up - forgot my lunch and run out of steam.
Just a view of overall conditions (can't figure out how to post a thumbnail).

Nice! Right under the Coleman was the best and finding the pockets where the wind had blown the latest snowfall.  The biggest excitement was watching hikers on top of the pinnacle cause rocks to fall right where i was going to traverse in the next five minutes.

&#$*#$$
Did the phrases "better than your ass cheek" or "can't see d***" come to mind?  Maybe we should invent a new sub sport called suncup slalom ya crazy mother...Let's get some turns soon!!!!!
I've never made it to the Sholes yet either, but in Sept. we got a lot of laps off Coleman and on the way to/from it.
We skied off the Coleman pinnacle a few times, I can't believe we didn't hit up the sholes glaicer / portals area. It looked so good, but my buddies were just not up for it. I do give them credit for hiking all that way with heavy 120 mm underfoot skis.

It was nice to make it out that way since i usually don't go that far in the winter.

Nice, I was out past artist point that day getting my turns in.

Where did you ski?  We could see Artist's and Table from Ruth and there are still plenty of patches and lines left.
Nice, I was out past artist point that day getting my turns in. While probably not as good as Ruth it was a simply a gorgeous day to be out there.
Best place in the world to be ...
I thought it was OcTAYberFresh.  Well, just a few windblown pockets of fresh.

I was too lazy to resize and post pix last night, I'll get around to it today.

A great day out and while a longer walk than Heliotrope, definitely worth it for the views on a view day such as we got.
Congrats on getting 12 months!!!  The snow looked like it was in pretty good shape too - nice and smooth for this time of year!
ah yes, dedication. It's good for the soul.  Some sweet pics
I wondered how it went when it was raining here at 3:00.  Glad you guys were able to enjoy some blue skies and it looks like Chris was enjoying the turns.
good info, Clawskinner.
Thanks !!
I send peace, tranquility and massive growth to your son for the next 4 years. :)

If you're referring to the middle guy standing on the trail (6th pic), I know that guy & those are Traubs he was packin'.

Nice job!  It takes a lot of commitment to get out and do it in Sept. and Oct. Way to go!

I am surprised by how little snow is on Hood. Is this a typical snowpack for the mountain this time of year?

Yes, this is a good year.  The south side of Hood holds the least amount of snow.  See photo below taken two weeks ago for the NE side.

Nice.  That's my usual route as well.  In winter, one can skin around that last scramble climber's right top of Palmer.  I did last week of September, looks pretty much unchanged, except I couldn't see more than 50-feet and knew I close the the glacier edge, so I bailed prior to crater-rock.

We live in Welches, and I'd say this year's October coverage is pretty typical of the last 10-15 years.  Some years have been better, some not.  Last year or year before,...
Sweet Buck - have a good time - the weather should be nice!  Head up a bit higher than the Palmer for some nice views if you get tired of spinning on the lift.  We should get together this Spring for some climbing and riding.

Jibber D - the snowpack right now is about typical for the southside of Hood.  Mid-late October is about as thin as it gets.  Don't know about it becoming snow free any time soon, but the Palmer mostly dissappeared under rocks in 2005.  Some searching could...
Nice!  I'll be heading up to Hood tomorrow.  My wife has a conference in Tennessee and is bringing our 17 month old along for 6 days -- I'll miss them terribly, but I've got a 3 day weekend and a lot of pent-up Daddy energy.  Plan is to ski tomorrow, probably lifts with some trekking thrown in, and then two days of quality riding east of Hood and on St. Helens.  Thanks for the report and say hi to Todd.
I am surprised by how little snow is on Hood. Is this a typical snowpack for the mountain this time of year? Are there predictions it will be 100% snow free in coming years?

Also, aren't there still several people missing on Hood (from past winter tragedies)? How many likely spots (crevasses, melted out cliff floors) might be places to look and make a recovery?
