mmmh. Food for thought. If I go back to brakes will you give me some Jedi lessons on brake care?

I will.
You have the word of a Jedi Master.
It will be good to deliver you back from the darkside.

Were I in your shoes (boots?) I’d be going back to the ski brakes, guys ;)
They’re really not that much heavier that those 6 foot leashes you’re now lugging around and, like the bindings, they work pretty good when you understand their idiosyncrasies and take care of them.

Scotty, I also use the B&D leash but I have not had a release to test the reliability of the plastic tubing covering the zip tie. Could you post or send me a PM with your solution.

author=andyrew link=topic=17743.msg74910#msg74910 date=1288282336] For all the folks that went up towards Muir, how was it?
Wind picked up; very flat light by 4pm: wind effects and occasional crust so the downhill ride was slower than I expected. Beautiful day, all in all, and it's just starting. N
For the most part there was very little wind. The passes and ridge lines had a light to moderate breeze.
Lackadasical gate opening aside, a beautiful day in Paradise. Snow was variable (wind effect/wet pow/occasional suncrust on S or SE slopes), but overall skiable and sweet. Regardless, it was great to be skinning from a parking lot through a wintry wonderland in October!
Definitely a bit of a herd mentality in effect, as thirty or forty plus people followed the skin track up towards Pan Point. But with all the fresh snow, breaking trail was a bit of a chore. For all the folks that...

Not the best snow, but considering the amount, a great start indeed.
Yes it was a beautiful day, thanks for the photos. How was the breeze where you were?
We only had time for one lap in Silver Basin - the snow was deep and smooth. Turns were great, falls were a lot of work getting back up 8) We skied all the way down to the lodge - got a couple good core shots :(. The ole Reverends are pretty thrashed, finally. Time for new skis!
It was cool to run into you again!
We skied the Paradise down to 4th crossing.
Sweet wind packed pow ;D

Gotta love it! Early season powder is something to savor - nice work!

Edit to add.:On an equipment note. I fell on one of my runs and lost a ski that was attached using the B&D ski leash( it was attached to the ski with the breakaway zip tie protected by plastic tubing that B&D supplies and recommends). Breakaway link broke and ski was loose. Found it after 10 mins of digging but I was surprised it broke in a fall. Breakaway link needs to be streng...
Yes... we were. Took a "first timer" out today and had a great time. I had to reset the clock after ankle breakage... so this is another full year of TAY for me and 4 for Mr. Knees!! Forgot my camera, but thankfully didn't forget how to ski powder. :)

:'(
HAHAHA ;D
How was work at my office today Kyle? It's terrible when your boss goes skiing and you have to work. ;)
With the amount of riding you're going to get this winter, you're getting no sympathy from me! ;D
Wind was howling up Silver Basin causing snow to become more cohesive with every run. Ski track was filled by the time we started back up. Saw some crack propagation starting later in the day. Not enough snow to be really worried and vegetation anchoring still in affect but still good to be cautious.
Some natural sloughs in JBAS and 3way peak area on steeper aprons below cliffs.

Did it warm up? Considering calling in sick on Friday and debating between Crystal or Chinook if it reopens.
Congrats on 24 months Hawth! Nice to get some decent October turns in!
I was up there too and did pretty much the same route, but kept skiing from Norman down the Alpine Trail to Govy Camp. There was still a good 2-3 feet down through there, but a lot of brushy stuff sticking up through it. Hopefully it will last and make a good base.
Thanks to the Alabama couple in the jeep who picked me and the dog up hitchiking on TLine road so we could make the long descent!

let's hope so, after all the biggest allure of BC skiing is crowded slopes and traffic, right? :P
I think the real allures are the tall stacks of mountain blueberry pancakes at Longmire, and a bottomless cup of coffee. Have fun everyone!
It is the loading of the avy start zones that causes Chinook to close and from what I saw yesterday, that had started.
They won't do avy work from what I understand until next spring.
You got it right Scotsman. The rising avalanche danger, and road conditions (see Jimjar) are the driving forces in this decision. "Temporary" at this time as we will monitor conditions, but unless conditions really improve (or deteriorate d...
Word is that it's already closed for the season :(
Good news is that Crystal usually opens soon about the time Chinook closes.
Maybe the ganga-la may have some delays? Hope it does not delay the opening of the mountain either.

Nice Video and well timed to the music! I was sad as "we" headed down into the rain... ;D
FWIW, the NPS Hotline mentioned that the Cayuse/Chinook road closing was “temporary”.
Damn! looking good up there.
Looks like a tripod on his back.

We got yelled at before getting out of the parking lot but still were able to sneak in a few runs. Paid to be there early today with the noon closing.
My guess is it will be closed for the year. There is no shortage of snow up there. Stepped off the board into waist deep.

Chinook is now closed. Stefan and I happened to be the last ones off the hill today. Helped 7 cars (including a park ranger) get unstuck on the way out. Even got to watch as a snow plow slid sideways into the ditch. :)
Congratulations! Joedabaker and I closed it down last year.Did they say if they were planning on reopening again or is that it for the year?

those were my friend allen's praxis powders, i was on the vintage explosives. I didn't expect it would be as deep, so i brought out the rock skis.
Glad everyone enjoyed the photos.
As for depths, there was at least 6 inches everywhere, and over 3 feet in places. We hit bottom every now and then, but it wasn't too bad, no damage.... we also left at 2 PM a...
Awesome, Sam. Get used to big skiable dumps around these parts. Say what you will about Rocky Mountain blower, cascade powder is denser and can be skied well even when shallow (especially uphill). Of course, snow snakes can be an early season/frontcountry hazard wherever you are.
So why don't you tell us a bit about being a Famousinternetskiier (.com). How does that work? a lot of guys around here are famous for one thing or another. Is it a cl...

Noooo!!!! Paradise and Baker are too far of a drive :'(
Just be aware that after the first significant snowfall of the year the NPS usually struggle to get the road open fast and a lot of people are investing in going to Paradise/Muir tomorrow. I long wait at Longmire gate could ensue but given the fact that my loathing for Ubegrugagaga is well known, he will...

Scotsman, check your camera manual for "exposure compensation." It should be set to between +2/3 and +1 1/3 stops for snow. That's why your photos came out so dark.
I usually do just the opposite on days like that or you won't be able to make out the ski tracks.

Nice Sam. Hopefully we can make some higher elevation turns on Wednesday...
