I went down the slot with my little brother Tony and Dave. There was another group of two who already had two laps and there were already two tracks in it before they got there. So, six tracks before we hit it.

It was definitely windblown on top, but opened up to what would have been really good snow (first tracks) well before the dog leg and awesome from the dog leg down.

We climbed out, gained a little more vert, and then dropped through the Phantom. Props for "skii...
Look for Scott's major Youtube debut with a gopro vid,  downskin from Colchuck Col to Icicle road. Sick!
glad you all had a great pow day!

I've noticed the more I babble, the faster my partners will break trail to get away from me.

ooops,

Yes Marcus, those are most of the new boots you gave me. missing some buckles, straps, some fiddling with the walk ski mode, differant tongue, and dremel work on the shell..

They work great for me, thanks!

Haha.. still a fun day.

I don't know what's worse.. five minute pov videos of the tips of someone skis or the 15 seconds of me trying to put my jacket on.

I never took my camera out all day, so here is a picture from the saturday before.

now selling limited editions of my guide book, "50 classic teleboard-skin-ski decents in the PNW"? Most...
It was great skiing thats for sure! Just glad the "local" we met had already put in the skin track! And of course Sidnie's critiquing of the guys kick turns at, well, every kick turn we did the whole day made the skin fun.
Agreed! I dropped my daughter off at 9:30 for lessons, toured up 2,200' and skied great knee deep, occasionally blower back to the car with friends!
gale force winds, maniacal laughter... and one big white wha... ice cliff.

I don't even want to show you my vid from the same day
Great video Ross!  That waterfall always intimidates me, great job skiing it!  I was in the group of three just ahead of you on the first climb.  Good to see you, Chris and Curt as well as some other familiar faces in the other groups.  We ended up skiing the slot for our last run after talking with another party who had skied it earlier in the day.  The top half was OK, the bottom half better but the snow was better on the phantom side.  Overall some of the nicest snow I've skied in Washin...
chair two devotees were experience those tree bombs en mass as well  :D
There's no such thing as too much replying and photo posting!

Where is this place across the valley you referred to?

thanks for the post Liz.  There is some confusion.  The road from Paradise Parking Lot to the Stevens Canyon Road is the Paradise Valley Road.  The Stevens Canyon Road is the 1st right above Narada Falls Parking Lot going up hill.  The "normal" ascent to Mazama Ridge from the Paradise Valley Raod is just across the 4th crossing  bridge, beginning up along the right side of the Paradise River which is the "creek" the flows over Sluiskin Falls and conti...
Sorry we missed you all,
Glad you found the goods, that slope is a fun ski and more often than not holds good snow. We found similar conditions across the valley. Any aspect which had been exposed to Friday's sun had an unpleasant, but skiable crust. North facing slopes held good powder. If you can excuse a little post jumping, here are a couple pix from our day.  ;)

Gary
Awesome!  I just spent a week in McCall in early Feb skiing with my brother who moved to town last fall (he loves it:).  Great terrain and excellent snow you have out there.  We used sleds to access the skiing, highlights included Sawtooth and some beautiful couloirs above Twin Lakes.
Here's a link to a Scribble map I put  together.

Guye Peak
Sorry i missed it. Will dream of those turns while i'm having my knee scoped.
A mediocre poem for a good photo is definitely a fair trade  :D
I don't see why not.  The N facing chair isn't open this winter, so those runs should be good.  The actual stand of Tamarack that gives the name to the resort is on the N boundary of the area.  Sweet tree skiing with no tree wells to worry about.  Plus one can skin up from the westside road on the way to the resort.  That's what locals have done for years before the resort was a gleam in a real estate developer's eye.  McCall is about the souther...
Nice to meet up with you and Nick and share the pit work.  The bond to the MLK crust was strong on our NW aspect.  Hopefully the strength of the   bond of all the new snow to the Feb 7 crust will strengthen and we can visit some of the open slopes in the near future.  Some of the best Olympic skiing we've seen.  Thanks for the Haiku.
Hey Fresh. Good talking to you at the bottom of the old growth a couple times (I was in the party of 7 that included the WAC connection). My decision to ski inbounds today was clinched by seeing a ~2 foot deep, 7 foot wide slab break in a small dip below the upper lift tower on the way out Saturday. Slid on the crust layer. The skiing was incredibly good.
Nice find! I take some responsibility for Friday's Kendall pillage  :). I was surprised to find sun crust near Stevens on Saturday as well considering how cold it was.
SWEET!!!!!! and yes, Gunnshy is just North of Gunn.
Thanks for the TR and photos.

Seeing Tamarack is now open Thursday thru Sunday, can you tour there when the area is closed ?
thanks again for another nice report
We were 150' short of Foss peak when when the real snow began. With reduced vis and windpack left above us we turned around  also. Our consolation prize was the powder ski on exit . Sluff mangement on steeper pitches was our only " problem ?" Not a lot of skiers in some of the best powder of the year. I  noticed some ski tracks at exit of Nisqually at the bridge. Hard to imagine enough glide out in the deep snow on lower glacier.
Nice video Silas, and some strong skiers making some sweet turns!
Hmmm, I am confused about which bridge this is. The standard route to Mazama Ridge via the Steven's Canyon Road begins at 4th Crossing and I am not aware of any required bridge crossings on that route?

Taking the high route from the Paradise parking lot would take you over the Edith Creek log bridge (a sometimes edgy crossing for me). Then to another bridge below Bundy's, another pucker crossing for the Jibber.

Can someone help clarify for me?

I could see your squiggles on Mazama when I made a break for the parking lot from above pan point. I wish I would have gone that way from the get go!
I'm glad some of you liked the video.  I've been playing around with different angles a bit.  For this shot I just mounted it to my ski pole with a ski strap and held it out in front of me.  Pretty simple....

I apologize if these posts seem too commercial.  Maybe I should have gone with an alias.  It would have probably made things easier.  I just wanted people to know where the information was coming from.

It seems like someone has issues with me personally (or...
I'm the woman who fell in.  Liz, not Cecilly.  I was ascending toward Mazama Ridge following the usual route up from the big bend in Stevens Canyon Rd.  Not sure of the name of the creek there.  The bridge had 5+ feet of snow on it.  I was following a track right down the middle of the bridge where others, including my husband just a few feet in front, had passed.  In an instant, the snow fell out from under me and I found myself laying on my back in the creek below.  I'm generally pre...
Where exactly is the run you guys did?  I'm curious about where at the pass that nice slot in the trees was.

Dr. Telemark
great pix as always! way to get out there amar
thx for sharing the "love" .. you guys are sick animals  ;)
Oh yeah, it was :) Curt and Chris went directly down the gully which was a bit rocky. I took the cliff huck.
proud effort fellas,  hell of a deathmarch.
I'm not sure if they're new boots anymore, since he's already ripped a couple buckles off them.
Nice TR and video edit, Ross... waterfall looked entertaining.
Brutal... thanks for the report.  Good effort.  Are those Scott's new boots?
Ale, splitboar....er....AT skier....er...hell, I don't even know anymore...and I'm not sure Scott knows anymore.

Tails tucked, skins on, we're headed down.

Last look.

Here's a little video, sharing a little...
Good on you guys for scoring these lines! A group I skiied with the past 2 Sundays encountered knee-wrenching sloopy or refrozen mank!! Hoping to get more of your style of snow soon...
Nice video. I like the pole-mounted camera angle.

The commercial aspect seems pretty simple. If a client had made and posted the video, I don't think anybody would have commented on it. But when a guide makes and posts the video (with an offer of more guiding availability in the future) it seems like a commercial post to me.

This is an isolated case, and it does include good condition info. I won't predict what the moderators may think. I recall that in the past a...
Silas - I like your tralbreaking style  ;)
Indeed, thanks Charlie!

At the end of our second run (part of which Jack has in his linked video) one member of our party said, in essence "That's the best snow I've ever skied in Washington, and I'm going to have to tell the folks I went to Powder Creek in BC two weeks ago that it was better than anything we had there..." While I've had a few outings with perhaps slightly better snow, I think that may be sp...
Thanks for cutting the uptrack Silas (Charlie)! On a nearby meadow: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jackmc/5482681654/in/set-72157626156456562/
I'm guessing somewhere near Gunn Peak, but where exactly, or what road are you approaching from?  Looks interesting.....
well written Leyland!

So nice to be able take advantage of the cold snap and ski all the way to the skykomish. I was suprised with the options for good ridable terrain up there.

leyland skiing off the summit.

into the gulley. so fun.

looking back up.

Glad you got some windless goods Silas.  I ended up in town trying to kick this lung problem.  That video is killing me!
We got a few small settlements off sunny aspects, powder on shady ones. One sluffy release to a crust ~18" down on a steeper roll in the trees, minimal propagation. Good skiing - interested to see how it changes Sunday.
Jeff was at Harts Pass for 9 days, not Washington Pass.  Different Snotel sites for a reason.
Yep, we were there too.  Great conditions and lighting.  A little on the chilly side when you stood still.  It was cold enough that one of my two video cameras stopped working but the other one hung on for a few segments.  The snow depth was noticeably lower this year - many more trees sticking up.

Here is a brief video to highlight the tree skiing in over a foot of powder.
