The Debris field, wow.  Just wow!
sorry to hear about yr ankles Scott, healing godspeed and all!

Given pleasant weather Mt. Pugh is always a joy. Once at Stujack and above no matter what direction you look, the views are stunning. A fun and varied trip. Good company. A lot of sun. I've never eaten that much snow; a definite rhythm developed on the way up:  kick step, place ice axe, dip mouth in snow, repeat.   Here's some pics -

My weaning at Salmo-Creston Pass in the mid '70's on heads, cables and leather boots seems so tame.  I missed out on so much not getting to ski in the East.  Begs the question, has anyone acutally moved west to east for the skiing???
So many great memories from so many years ago.  Remembering being sucked into the Venus Flytrap of the Headwall on my first trip in the early or mid-'80's and continuing up as it steepened beyond my comfort zone convinced it was going to faintly bench just ahead - which it never did - until I got too gripped to go any higher, and shaking as I chipped out enough of a ledge to get my alpine skis and pack off my back, I was suddenly startled out of my skin when a dude launched the Li...
No comparison Alecapone... and choosing your skiing partners is as important as selecting the routes...  ;)

I guess you are referring to 19-21 Feb Mt Stuart. Ice Cliff & Sherpa Glaciers

Awesome. I was turned away twice on the glacier trying to do that because of Avi and lack of snow. Nice peak. Thanks for the TR.
What a great collection of stories, it sure is on my list of must ski places, and this just made it all the more exciting to contemplate. thanks
great TR Andy, glad you guys had a good time.  Am looking forward to getting some turns in when I get back from Peru.
Great adventure.  Love your day by day reporting format.  Some mondo packs in play, there..
I wanna get rad.

Good write up, thanks.

Much better then last winters ultra fast summit cuddle fest, eh?!?

beautiful!... not even out of the womb and already clockin a 4 month streak.

'sounded like an out of control jet'

I hate it when you here that noise,  your hair standsup, then you realise it WAS just a jet.

Awesome fellas!!!

I don't know what hurts worse right now.. my ankles, or sitting and waiting while everyone is getting rad.

Great trip....Thanks for sharing....

I have to set aside some time to go back to the Sierras....

Looks like you had good weather!
Excellent! I was just looking at possible trips out of Mammoth along the high route south. I've hiked it in the summer and always wanted to get down there for the corn season. I wasn't sure about the opening of the road to Lake Mary TH.

Let's be honest, this was a foregone conclusion given you were with GaryJan ;)

Regardless, nice work getting out despite the weather.  I'm guessing the snow pack was fat up in Royal Basin!
Awesome! May head down to the East side soon.
Beautiful and mysterious area. Doesn't look like a fun escape!
Hi Dick, sounds like you two had a nice trip.  Yeah, I wouldn't wait for another 33years to go back.  You'd need to be carried up and down the mountain even though it might be much shorter by then!  I should go back there fairly soon too.

Near the top caught up with a group of climbers that had come from the Blewett Pass sno-park on snowshoes and where now postholing up the right hand side of the slope -- they were roped up, but also walking in a tight bunch with long loops of rope dragging on the snow -- WTF ?

...i suspect that their collective maneuvers constitute a new form of 'drafting'... ;D

That little valley between Cave Ridge and Mt. Snoqualmie is a scary place.

...i suspect that is because of the convergence of two slide paths...
Nice photos and thanks for the conditions update.  It sounds like you guys picked a good day for your return to the mtn - interesting to hear about the change from the last time you climbed it!
Yes-I forgot to mention we heard what we thought was a tremendously large avalanche across the highway, as well.  It sounded like an out of control jet -we thought it was so big it was going to cover the highway. Couldn't see it, only heard it. Glad we weren't there!

Oh, and correction to my original post: the slope that was sliding with every turn at the end of the day was NORTH-FACING, as well. Not south-facing. Just goes to show how crazy it is out there right now. B...
Was up doing a crevasse rescue review at Yodelin on the 8th..  listened to releases from across the hwy all day long...
Thanks for the report Troy.  Going to get warm in the next couple of days.
That little valley between Cave Ridge and Mt. Snoqualmie is a scary place.
This is ridiculous, even my car goes skiing more than I do these days.
The summit photo is peachy. Good work getting in there & up there.
Way to get after it Michael!  Nicest weekend in CO this spring to be sure. Is that Hallett Peak off to the left?  What a nice/beautiful area... too bad we couldn't see anything a couple weeks ago!  Nice pics too.
Yes - all couloirs are open on South Stuart with good snow coverage, and on the North side even the Ice Cliff might still be in condition.  Issue could be the cornice as it seemed quite large and overhanging when we passed by its exit.  Have fun and be safe!  :)

Victor
Awesome! Ulrich's couloir still looks pretty filled in.
Three of us went up May 1 in very similar conditions (from what the pictures show). We were all on splitboards and were able to skin the entire route. We left the Marble Mt. parking lot just before 8am and were at the summit just after 1:30. The snow softened quicker than we expected so we could have been a bit faster had we left a little earlier. We left the summit at about 2:15 and had the best ride of the year all the way to the car (except for a flat section of maybe 20 yards). The decent to...
Looks like good conditions, and perfect timing getting in there before it melts out. Nice work, Crystal!

That looks fantastic!!  Well done!
This is the year for the Watson!  Sounds like a great solo day in the mountains.  How was the snow before and after the portals?  Settling into corn season soon?
Un superbe weekend en montagne!  Here is the link to the pictures:

A car-to-car strategy should be no problem for a fit party right now.

Thanks! Kept skiing event post-due date while HUGE with my first-hope I can do that again. The deep snow pack will sure make it easier this summer.  My little girl who just turned two requested to go skiing last month & did! Can't wait to bring her out, too.  Possible future TAYer in our midst.  All we hear now is, "More skiing, mommy?"
"Not too shabby for being 4 months pregnant-can't wait to head out again. This marked 118 months of TAY"

Wow, not sure which is more impressive! Congrats!!!
Crystal - That's surprising, as we kicked steps up the top part of the false summit headwall (but skied Ulrich's instead).  We also had pow turns down from Long's.  Gotta love the refresh aspect of the recent weather cycle!

Pete - Two Subarus made it past all of the washouts on the road when we were out there weekend before last.  A car-to-car strategy should be no problem for a fit party right now.
Good2Go, we saw very little evidence of your trip, maybe just a little bit of a skin track in the trees below the couloir I think.

Pete A, It's hard to say how far you could get without high clearence. There isn't one obvious bad spot but rather several washouts along the Teanaway road strating pretty early on.  The high clearence also allowed us to continue past the turn off to Beverly creek because we drove through some snow, but that snow should be melted soon.
Glad you guys finally got it Crystal!  8)  As you know it had eluded Victor and I twice when we attempted it in previous years only to awake to rain or find ourselves at Long's Pass looking at a half melted out route.  I know how much he wanted it.  Glad you had fabulous conditions to boot.

Looking forward to the photos.  I so wish I could have joined you guys.  Oh and Jake, what a good friend you are to trade your high clearance vehicle for Victors Beamer.  What a trade, hope y...
nice job!  if one didn't have access to a high-clearance car (just a subaru)...any idea how close you could get to the trailhead before you'd have to head up on foot?
Nice report.  Coming back from climbing at Vantage on Sat it looked like the mountain was shrouded in clouds.  Great to hear you had good conditions.  Did you see any trace of our tracks from the previous weekend?
I'm heading down there this weekend and trying to decide if I should just get up wicked early or stay overnight. How long did it take you to get to the summit?
Awesome stuff. Makes me want to get up there! Thanks for all the great images and story.
very nice franklin.  the terrain up there looks fantastic!
Impressive blog at the link... Nice job!
