The infamous ski school "garland". ;)

Thanks for the report, Randy. It's usually over at Blewett by May. Did you see the tipi?
Yes -- or even mid-april
I did not see the tipi-- but then I didn't know there was one out there to look for... I've often thought it would be nice to have some sort of camp/cabin/lodge in the Tronsen Meadows area.
x2. In the Alpental valley in the am and saw a lot of activity on N - NE slopes.
Cool! The well written report and labelled pics are really appreciated!

Wonderful TR and images. The vista photos with the labelled outlines of the peaks is very nice and helpful. A loooooong day. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for the report and photos. There is a lot of snow up there! Few questions about the road since I want to get back there soon: when you say "good clearance" do you mean "Subaru" or "jacked up truck"? How far can you drive without good clearance? Would a bike be worthwhile for the road?

Nice trip you guys! Eric, my only complaint is that you didn't post enough pics! I'm sure you have plenty more ...
You want to right-click on the picture to include and "Copy Image Location", then put that between the IMG tags:

Looks like a fun trip!

I first skied Tuckerman Ravine about 22 springs ago at the age of 8. We got about halfway up and my dad (who carried most of my gear to the basin from the parking lot) realized it was getting pretty steep. I still remember trying to click into my bindings on a 40-45 degree slope (verified years later on a return trip) and thinking how scary it was. Must be even tougher without a person there holding your ski. It is an interesting insight into how backcountry is done in the east...
The road is closed three miles before the trailhead... on the bright side - it took us less than 20 minutes to slide these three miles of snowmobile inflicted oversized washboard.
Below 5500 the snow got heavy and sticky
Above was a different story =)

Wow, that first pic is Epic!...and the last one sums it up. Great TR. Thanks guys
I'm diggin the slo-mo (or maybe I do ski in slow motion, hmmm) video. Nice to get a fair weather day in the hills.
Sweet! I've been trying to make that trip happen all season, but it just hasn't. Way to get it!
if the summit's policy is going to be shut down alpental with 225" of snowpack, and i can't use my pass, then i'm not going to listen to patrollers or management whine.
PS shot 4 is looking real nice...

author=freeskier link=topic=20733.msg88471#msg88471 date=1304632875] I'm changing the bumper sticker on the back of my Subaru.......It's going to say;" Screw Tibet......Free Alpental!"
hilarious!
a few guys standing in the employee lot (last week? wk before?) said they got the same vibe. bummer...
it's officially "free" now, I guess?
Thanks for the invite! Had a great time Tuesday looks bluebird want to ski the zipper or something at the pass??
Great TR, excellent write up, and beautiful photos, however I'm almost convinced that this story may be a fiction based on the account of the upside down crevasses. ;)
Gotta ask, how was the road? looks good up there. how was the snow?
Kenji,
Yet another commendable exploration, on the list for far too long! You guys have a knack for getting through whatever challenges beset the start to find some great Stuff and great tours. Great pic of David cranking in good form.
Thanks for the post,
John

Well I hope the Canucks win the cup this year, but anything can happen.
Kinda like the Seahawks, they make it to the final but still haven't won the
championship.
I made a little video just documenting the day to some music.

Nice trip Bill thanks for the ton of pictures. You put on some mileage that day. Sweet picture of the chute...goes on an on...very nice place that I may never get to.
Wow! Another reason to move to Canada...
Excellent, good timing ! Great idea for future trip - thanks.
Beautiful line. Way to get after it boys!
That pic from Lee sure is dramatic. Nice work!
Nice report looks like ya got a good dose of sun. Nice crisp photos too.
Mike is predicting a Canucks championship in that last awesome shot. Nice work, guys!

My brother and I recieved a bit of a lecture from the guy in charge the next day, although it was apparent that he was only doing his job and other than warning us about obvious dangers there was no attempt to stop us...
Cool line. I love that picture of Mike at the bottom!
author=TBill link=topic=20742.msg88465#msg88465 date=1304624674] Any takers?
yep! been eyeing exactly that. The top left (ramp) and right entries onto the face look well filled. Earlier start?
Nice pics!
I think you meant lurking cornice above......
Fantastic! Thanks for a TR, that's been one of my favorite summer hikes, and on my ski list for years. I guess I could wait till June 1...
Thanks guys!

Definitely a trip report. Thanks for checking it out.
Great stuff!
Brings back many fond memories of my first trip "skiing" up there. I fell into one of those huge show chutes in the fog near lunch rocks and rode down 30 yards or so. I couldn't see a thing and remember hearing skiers whizzing by me at terrific speed and being terrified that I might get nailed. I wound up working up there at Camp Dodge for the YCC program and met my to be wife putting in the sewer system at the Tucks Lodge. My wife composed a song about ou...

Nice, I'm a big fan of the after work Alpy laps.
Did you see Nash at all? I wonder if the bumps from this weekend are filled in...that would be pretty sweet for spring corn.

SlipSlider- Amazing tale. Leather lace up boots, bindings that allowed a little lift of the heel, elevator shaft steepness...I can understand how an experience like that can stay etched in your mind. Most of the action was on routes 1,2 & 3 as impending ice fall and crevasses dominated the right side and the snow was spotty at the top in the center part on the day I was there.
Some beta on the runs.

Karl and Eric Blumhagen
mid 90's
207's
no axes
night night
With help from glenn_b and Karl Blumhagen, it has been determined that the point skied by Karl and his brother in the mid-1990s was a little left (south) of the true summit of Chair, as viewed from the thumb tack. They didn't ski the NE Buttress of Chair Peak....
SE facing slopes were starting to entrain snow if something got it moving. Still pretty solid all other aspects at the time of the trip.
Skiied north side of Kendall down towards Alaska lake. Safe on north facing everything else seemed sketchy, a lot of natural slides.
You guys see any action?

Thanks for the TR. Never seem to get back in season for Tuckerman's. been hearing about it my whole life.
