Great effort and pics guys! This trip is high on my list. Gotta love those unexpected 10k days!
Nice work Amar and Hannah.
Smooth conditions from the top must have been a real treat.

Nice Amar. Sorry about your friends. A great day on the mountain has a way of healing ill feelings. There are few things that beat a sunny day on the raindawg.
That was a great trip in perfect conditions with your son. Those memories will last a lifetime. ;)
Awesome. That face and couloir along with the views are a class act. That face on Colchuck always sticks out for me because I watched my brother tag a rock there and almost sail off those cliffs. Amazingly he pulled it together even with ice and cartwheeling! Even though I have always wanted to ski that route again, I don't know that I ever will. Either way, it is still very cool to see your images.
Great TR, he looks like a ripper!
My first back-country ski trip was back in the late 60s when I hauled my alpine gear up St. Helens with my dad. I had to carry it back down to the top of the Dog's Head because of white-out conditions, but loved it when I cruised past the climbers from there. I miss that beautiful symmetrical peak!

Nice going, those backwater ski spots are the best, and this year seems to have the snow to make them great spring trips. I just passed west of there, wish I would have thought to give it a look.

Yeah, isn't the road closed?

nice!
I was just looking through my pics from yesterday on Shuksan and realized by reading this report that these are your tracks...
Thanks for the picture.
It looked like people were busy up on Shuksan ... saw some nice tracks on the Hanging Gl when we got to our car. Nice couple of day for getting out.
nice!

Looked like fun, Barnett and I saw your tracks down the Park from Barometer yesterday.
Beautiful!
The traverse is popular this year!
(The no-skin route from summit to ski area requires some aggressive contouring that's probably not practical in all conditions.)

Headed up to Colchuck with Michael Shaffer "Bird" yesterday to have a look at a couple of lines we were considering skiing. We decided on the north face to NBC on Colchuck.
We climb up the Colchuck Glacier to the col and made our way to the summit deciding not to climb the NBC as it was getting hit with morning sun as we arrived at the lake and wanted to minimize our exposu...
Thanks, was a really fun line to ski! Have a few more ski pics, but none taken on the NBC.
Dude, way to be a baller!
Have any more photos of the trip down?

You must wonder what the clients think when a self powered skier does the same line they did.
Tough call, but I would have said you got the green hit on the couloir.

Great tour all. The Slot was in great shape, the apron was mashed potatoes mixed with sluff and even the Phantom skied great. We were lucky to be able to ski all the way to the car and I'm not sure if that's possible anymore.
There's are a few more photos below and the whole set starts here: https://picasaweb.google.com/sbentsen/May2011#5607511441566266818

I frankly thought this was mis-posted to May when I saw the pow shots.
Mid-may in Oregon? Give me a break, what a year! Thanks for the eye-candy.

Garrett- was the road melted for biking all the way to the fire circle where the trail starts climbing to the ridge? Nice work and pics, thats one hell of an approach if you're not pedaling!
No runs allowed into the Caldera! It is the deepest lake in N. America and is dam cold, even in the middle of summer. I would love to say "Yeah, I'd do it." But after looking at it more closely, you'd be one sluff away from certain death, even with a PFD. I think you'd sink with skis, boots, poles ,etc. in most all of the areas we viewed. Also, you don't really want to break the rules, especially since the rangers are pretty helpful folks. That's no...
awesome. Do any runs down to the lake? Is that allowed?
Sweet - looks really nice! I love that area. Can't believe how heavy the snowpack is in the Oregon cascades still!
So are the bikes just used as mules or can you move the gear around enough to actually ride them?
Garrett, these and your blog pics are awesome. I look forward to more if you keep posting here. What's your wideangle lens?

We actually considered camping in the parking lot but it wasn't a very nice spot for tent camping with truck traffic etc...There were no signs prohibiting this. There's a great camping spot just 2 miles east off the highway near the snowparks.
There was a sign prohibiting "hiking" on the ski hill. I gave this a personally favorable interpretation as meaning onl...

So with the area closed but lots of skiing/snow to be had, do you see any problem going on the hill "in bounds" or outa bounds". How about car camping on the road parking area at the ski area...see any problems with that! Also, I know it is a small area but what what sort of vert of basic fall line skiing does it off up in and out of bounds...
Thanks for any info...sou...

Cowpoke had some good beta but it was NONAPPLICABLE this year due to roads blocked by snow.
The ski area was closed, but there was a lot of evidence of hike and ski. The signage I noticed prohibited entry into backcountry (which looked promising).
The Steens looked buried in snow, but BLM required a 1 week advance notice to get a permit to enter through locked gate in t...

Is it okay for me to put out a guide book yet ;)
No. You made a deal ... remember... pound of flesh?

You didn't drop my truck key up there did you?
Don't worry Chuck, your truck key is safely lost in our house. ;)
Great....Thanks for the update!
It is amazing out there....Go early be safe!

Thanks for the TR, I don't get down there very often, but more ideas are always welcome.

Check out the East Humbolts, Angel lake specifically. It's just south of Wells, NV. Sweet, big lines.
thanks David, i'll tuck this piece of knowledge in a safe place in my hippocampus - yes the peaks around Wells were really catching my eye.

How late is the ski area open? Are thei out of bounds freshies to be had.
That mountain sounds interesting...maybe the cowpoke can offer up some beta?
Good luck!!!

Cool man! I love the Warner mtn! I've x-country skied on roads there in early winter because there was not enough snow yet. Great hot springs in Surprise valley.
It can be pretty hard to get to the skiing in the mountains of NV, but with a big snowpack you should have an easier time of it. I miss NV so much, luckily there is a lot of good skiing here in the PNW!

author=Gregg_C link=topic=20728.msg88753#msg88753 date=1305220342] has anyone acutally moved west to east for the skiing???
probably not, but that's a good thing. lots of folks go west to ski for a time and come back and don't "bother" to ski. i went west and came back a couple of times. no regrets. in fact, i was blown away at what i had left here and stuff just keeps opening up and it's so accessible yet so...
A "Swiss redneck"...hmmm...needs definition:
-Believes in social medicine because of the tendency to hurt oneself while performing chain-saw art?
-Has a BS and an MS in something other than Engineering?
-Ah, I got it, moves to small Costa Rican beach town and thinks he owns the place.
Others?

Funny, in 1981 I was still a real Swiss Redneck, did not skitour and had never heard of Seattle - let alone the Cascades...
You've come along way!
