cool .. watched you guys on spot -- and the mountain cam (the morning soup looked ominous but then was glad to see it clear up) .. it was a loooong day, esp for kyle and jace .. but it looks gorgeous up there .. a sweet window ... nice reporting -- very informative as always
Nice report Amar very detailed. What a long ass walk. To bad White River was not open yet so you could make it a traverse. It is great to see all the snow that's in that area!
I agree that the Cowlitz area is especially nice for aesthetics.
It's amazing how hot it can get on snow, especially when we have been so shy of sun this spring. I remember putting piles of snow on my head held in place by the rim of my visor on one of those exhausting heat fests.

Yesterday(tuesday) turned out pretty well up there.
I pulled into the lot at 8:30am under grey skies and light snow. I sure was happy to have the sun on my face by McClure rock. Looks like you had some fun as well.

Here's a view of the entire Ingraham Direct route, showing the various zigzags through the Icefall, the snow-ice avalanche crown near 12500 ft, and the major bergschrund crossing near 13100 ft. Shot with a 170mm zoom from around 8200 ft on the Whitman Glacier yesterday, May 24, 2011:

We started at the Silver Star gate on HWY 20, there is plenty of snow, but as it melts out from the HWY it adds to the poast hole march. We were able to put our skis on about 1000 above the road.
Wow, just awesome!!!
I want to be able to share something like this with my son!!

Andy mentioned that when his party skied the Nisqually Ice Chute in April, their original objective was the South Tahoma Headwall.
Ha, I knew it!! When I ran into Andy, Seth, and Tyler at Pebble Creek on April 22, just minutes after they skied Nisqually Ice Cliff, I asked them if they'd skied the line from the summit. They said no, they'd skied from...

Thanks a million for letting me tag along, the immortalization, and everything else. Deffinatly one of the most memorable trips I've ever been on. boat to boat, all 5 days where a great experiance.
I somehow deleted all the pics off of my camera before loading them onto my computer. had some really good ones from the few times I had the nerve to let go of goode on the way up. Acutally, was more scared I wouldn't be able to get m...

Thanks for the TR. What trailhead did you start at? How deep is the snow up there at the moment? Haven't been up there since early April and am curious how the melt is progressing.

yep, is forest road 2820. Directions are on this page, little quilicene access. hike #835. http://www.olympicforest.org/hiking_guide.htm
re route, nearly all the route is in the first photo, taken from about 3 miles into FR 2820 from a high point. In photo, you see FR 2820 continuing, just above where the road turns right behind the forested ridge, is the gully we hiked. I can send a photoshopped version with route if you want via PM.

Nice photos, wish it was like that for us on Townsend Sunday.
Do you have a number for that FS road? And is any of your route in the first photo?

How old is your son? Since I have two young ones still in diapers, this TR is impressive and inspiring!
That's true if you break trail. You should get the honors of going first.
But once people get in the zone. They start charging.I didn't want to go
first but at least the second or third.

Every year in New Hampshire is a low snow year.
The annual summit total is something like only 250" but wind transportation is so dramatic that a single *centimeter* of new snowfall can create slab avalanches.

Fantastic job, Eduardo. We were a bit worried about you guys because we couldn't see you from the clearcut (we had to turn back earlier) but we could hear a lot of avy activity in that area--and we had already seen a big serac avy at 7:30am at the farther side of the Hanging Gl. Smart choice to opt for that narrower couloir. Niko
absolutely love this trip report!

So many lines in NY, NH, ME, VT besides Tucks, great to see you enjoying [and a knowing nod for your discretion].
so much stuff to see and ski. nice to be able to enjoy supportive corn snow that never really goes, "past prime". ever. even south facing. show up at 9am, noon, or in the late afternoon and never get on it too late.

great to see minifro ripping it up just like his ol man. Really wish my dad woulda snagged me out of class for such endeavors back in the day.
Hope we get another nice window like that sometime soon!

Please, sir. I want some more.
Thanks for posting that.

Joe, Great images and video clips of your trip with Paul. Jill and I missed our annual Sierra trip this spring. It sure is nice to ski the Sierra in the sun with corn. ;)
That middle pic is what spring skiing is all about.
That last picture is awesome! Throne seems to be the appropriate name for such a magnificent backdrop.

Hi Becky,
I was part of the group that met you on Long's Pass. I later learned that we did indeed wake the guys in the megamid. They skied Cascadian and we met back at Longs Pass later in the day. Our ski was uneventful and fun. We got to the summit at 2pm and back to the pass around 5pm. I wouldn't call it boney, but there was a spot that got pretty narrow around 7000'. The ski line comes straight off the summit which is very satisfying.
