Best day of the year (#2)  ;). After dodging rocks off Patsey Marley and Twin Lakes Pass here in the Wasatch, a powder day was all I wanted for Thanksgiving. God bless the deep and powerful snows in the PNW, it miss it so. Here are some more pics of the day.

Don, I noticed your brother is on Rando gear. I thought you were a tele person.  What happened ? ;)

I am a proselytizer, but some people only get converted half way to Paradise.  ;D

Nice stoke Rusty, as I sit here at my desk writing a paper...  Hard to beat Rainier on a beautiful day like that.
Thanks for the Report and the pics.
Sounds like like a fun payoff, Zap---roadside powder surprise.

another trail breaker in training.  ;)

Every year there's more
Climbing over our ski tails
Putting in the track.
Surprisingly, we made a few powder turns.

@Marcus -- the Squeaker gave me a dirty look when I tried to wake her at 3:45 am.

@Zap -- having others break trail is a really good idea.

Hope the snow falls soon -- I have a pile of skis to test again....
Amar,
i'm looking into getting a new camera, and i like the low-light shots you were able to get - what camera were you using for these shots?
Thanks!
Graham
Wow, looks gorgeous. Nice work!
Summit...

I spy Sperry...

Ski...
Yup, road past the lodge. I descended skiers left from Pan and dropped through the trees to the road, then skinned back to the lot.
My guess is the road after you pass the paradise parking lot. Looks awesome.
Nice powder.  Good to see Jeff making some powder turns.
Thanks Silas, Good info. Good tree skiing is soon to come.

The major creek xing is at about 2400', so you skinned from there?  I'm a bit surprised how low the coverage is already.

We skinned to the first creek crossing, after that it was easier to hike( due to root snags, rocks, etc.) skinned continuously after the major creek crossing with no difficulties. BTW the creek had low runoff and was a piece of c...
Fantastic!  Can't wait to see the pics.

AndyH, is there a good reference for what the symbols in your pit cross-section mean?  I'm away from my copy of "staying alive in avalanche terrain" book and can't remember the symbols offhand :)

Jk, great shots, awesome pictures and like it was said before in this same thread, you're the reason I got into AT Skiing and have touched people all around the US (Even a dude in Texas)

Awww, shucks. What a nice thing to say to Amar  ::)
Silas -- did you actually ski over Nordic pass (the low spot in the ridge between "radio mountain" and Mt Catherine)  or did you follow the groomed XC trails from "Grand Junction" to WIndy pass.    -- I'm wondering whether there is enough coverage in the old growth on the east side of Nordic Pass.
beautiful day to be out, it looks like.  I'm having trouble placing the location of that  last photo.  Mind sharing?

Kam, I think you need to enhance, put a Marketing spin, on the left pinky break story.  Sympathy at home will not change but I'm certain the "unwashed" local buddies could be persuaded to break trail for you for awhile.  Also, you could leverage your students.

I've been following the weather pattern in the Tahoe area,http://tahoeweatherdiscussion.com/,  and it appears the snowmaking machines are working hard. Hope the typical 5 foot storm cycle arrives soon.

I have to say with the new 'rules' and all, I think we can all consider truely making it to Muir if you take a picture inside the shelter since that's technically the camp!

Almost made it this time!

Jk, great shots, awesome...
Good work, Kamster.
Glad to hear the finger is better.
Yay for healed little toe, boo for bushy ribbon of snow... but as usual you make the most of it.  I assume all the Reno fires are under control now?  Did Squeak get to play this morning?
Kam ,way to pull off a tough one . Many years ago my new puppy and I were chasing each other around the dining room table.  I was barefoot and drunk and suffered a right angle little toe. Seems like it took forever to get back in a ski boot.

The office called, but the prediction of 6-10” of new snow and Splitboard Graham’s 11-25-2011 post called louder.

glad i could help you make the right decision  ;)
thanks weaver!

thank you sheispiste, the trip had so many of the same sunset conditions from the first week of october where i was influenced and learned my first  real lesson in how to speak Australian!
We skied from Pineapple and 3 runs back toward Piss pass and down by Trashcan in boot Top shaded conditions. Surprisingly good and cool throughou the morning and early afternoon.
Here's what Mt Snoqualmie offered today
Thanks Amar ,
Concise as usual with a few links I didn't know about.
Don't forget if you are 62 you qualify for a Golden Geezer (lifetime)senior  national park pass
for 10$.  Also there is a Access pass for U.S.citizens or permanent residents with permanent disabilities at no cost.
Tommy, see here:  Alpental 2011-12

Posted by Gib, the Alpy patrol director.  They do their best to allow pre-season touring and balance it with getting the mountain ready to open.
Silas, It's been years since I've skied w you (? Mazama Ridge w Joe about 15 years ago) I went up to the pass yesterday and almost joined you on the groomers but went to Alpental instead. Nice from chair 2 down but the last part was crazy crusty nastyness. Anyway, the patrol caught up to me when I was done and nicely asked that I not yo yo there on closed days. The way he went about it suggested that he didn't have the authority to stop me. He made it sound like there is lots of u...
The gate opening depends on overnight snowfall and staffing, see http://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/winter-travel.htm for more info and a useful table of how the closing time changes throughout the winter. Whether the road opens at all is determined by this matrix: http://www.nps.gov/mora/planyourvisit/upload/winter-road-opening-matrix.pdf

Estimated road opening times based on snowfall, copied from the Rainier climbing rangers' blog http://mountrainierclimbing.blogspot.com/:
Thanks for the TR.  New to the area and looking to make my first ski outing in the area and this looks like a great one to start with.  One question, what time does the gate open in the morning?  I swear I read somewhere that it closes at 5pm but haven't been able to find when it opens.  I imagine that a parks pass is also needed to get in, right?  Thanks again.
Jesus! in Adidas - the song was better than the skiing  ;D
Looks like you had a couple of nice runs! We crossed paths near the lower end of the meadow.  It was a great day to be out!

DH
Cool video!
Nice turns Silas!

and for the piccy

Nice tour, and nice piccy Ken! Nice to see that you are down-under the influence, still. Ski ya soon.
Great TR and images.  Watching this video and the recent one at Whistler reminds me of the power of avalanches.
Awesome TR! Great photos and video. It must have been an experience to watch that massive avalanche. Thanks!
Kenny - That is one really nice photograph.
and  the learning curve for  me is pretty vertical;

photograph of Amar Andalkar a few hundred feet above pebble creek.
another piccy

Amar, thanks for the ski crampon technique suggestion, it made a huge difference.

Kenny
Great pics Amar!
It was an awesome sunset!
We experienced similar conditions on the Paradise.
Wind buff with icy patches up high improving to 3" to 4" inches of powder in the flats all the way to 4th crossing.  Some of the sunnier slopes down low had a crust on them too.
When I saw your car in the parking lot close to sunset, and looked up at the snowfield in spectacular lighting, I wished I could be back up top for one more run.

Here are a few photo...
