You guys rock! This TR is totally inspiring. I make lists, but I've never put a chainsaw on one.
Allen Taylor only skis as an excuse to use his chainsaw and come along.

Wow, great job, and thanks for the pics. I was thinking about Eldorado on Saturday or Sunday but wasn't sure how far I could drive...I also have a 4-Runner :)
Nice job! I turned around in the upper part of the CJ earlier this year due to increasing instability. Would the use of a sled work to access, downed trees or avi debris over road?
Yeah Drew! Welcome back.
And nice one Svege....

seth and i skied back there in early december. the day before we had skied perfect un wind affected pow at similar aspect/elevation in cascade pass area but that chiwaukum zone was wind scoured down to boilerplate. i don't know what wind direction was for you but there didn't seem like much terrain sheltering it to the north

I was apprehensive that I'd get another e-mail from you (like the last 2 yrs), but this is better. Congrats on being engaged! Way to bag an awesome trip to a rad area.
I'm sorry to miss the trip, looks, and sounds like a good one, nice to make new friends on TAY!
No video, but here are some photos...

Nice sunset shot! I was up with two others on Saturday and that was our boot up the summit pyramid ending in said rime and ice gulley that was a bit bony for sure. We were too short on time to try the left side and had gotten to the highest point we could ski anyhow so we were pleased. Did you make it up the ridge on the left and then across or what?
BeckyB,
Outstanding ! Both your tour and the slideshow .
Hope Kyle and Jason post up thier tour ?

I think we have a free-heel bromance happening here ;)

sweet trip - thanks for sharing - your blog page is awesome by the way -
Mike Rolfs and I found the Dragontail couloir (south) and the Colchuk glacier (north) to cover your Northh Chiwaukum menu perfectly. Cold in full down at the col in bright sun, T-shirt weather at the top of the couloir right under the summit. Glacier was unpredictable 50% styrofoam, 20% breakable crust, 20% wind buff powder, and 10% mirror ice. Trouble was, in the shade late in the day, you couldn't tell what your next turn was going to be on.
I took a heap of crap before I left for the Eastside for going with a stranger also. I got the better part of the deal. Thanks again, Mike, and I hope we get to do it again with "teleable" snow.
What and where were the discouraging conditions? considering attempting the NW couloir tomorrow.
Dick got new skis? Don't look like usual yellow K2s...
Sounds like you found some good snow on the white salmon. I was in the group of 3 you saw climbing the BYS, conditions were wind affected for sure on the north face but still fun. Cool to see some headlamps coming down the white salmon while struggling up the skin track. That employee wasn't happy when we asked him to unlock the gate, think he would have left it unlocked until the parking lot was empty.
wow... i had a feeling you guys were in for a cool day.
hopefully i won't be at work when you go back for the next episode!

Cool - we saw your headlamps when we were leaving Heather Meadows around 6pm!
Also saw a light on top of Baker Saturday night for about 15 seconds around 7pm.

What a great time to be out. First photo might've had you in it, if not for the finite resolution of the camera, as it was taken a bit before the atmosphere went red. Second photo 'cuz it's pretty.
That descent must've been nigh perfect.

Yes I'm wearing tights & stuff, I was very new to the backcountry and still thought the 80's were cool.
What do you mean the '80's aren't cool anymore?
A lot? We skinned from the Sno-park (which melted out considerably over the weekend, will be patchy down low in another day or two). Sno-park was at 1800'?
The ski back down the road was about as good and rut-free as I've experienced. Uphills on the way home were skateable.

nice destination choice given the good weather! how much road skiing did y'all have to reach the trailhead?

There's a bit of rock downclimbing from Pandoras box, but it's a totally stonking route. We took a rope but didn't use it. I think we did it in June or July.

Sun, awesome views and no wind today but sadly, I was rooting for the Patriots.
Edit to add - no sign of snowmo's except when we saw tracks down in and around Haney Meadow.
Sorry about the Pats, Glenn. You know I can't stand either team having been an Eagles fan all my life. It was a bit hard to hold my attention to it as good a game as it wa...
Mack,
It was great to finally meet up with you. The shady slopes in the bowl were great. We found excellent corn on Hurricane Hill. I've never seen the sky so clear. I was amazed how far north we could see into Canada.
We'll have to do it again!

Is it actually called north chiwakum? I have always referred to it as the white pine cirque. Yes it is sometimes good, but usually that area is wind hammered by the time avalanche conditions dictate a green light. You can cut out most of the road approach if you know where to cut in.
Who knows? I've heard the peakbagger crowd call Pt. 7132, North Chiwau...
We were in Colchuck Lake area yesterday and experienced similar conditions. I thought the wind may have been a local phenominon but I guess not.

Sunny spring like laps were found on the south slopes all day! The wind scoured slopes softened into a very nice 1-2 inches of corn! There was a very high vitamin D absorption factor.

Yeah, I agree. You seem to be slowing down in your old age.
Nice one John.
I totally am. I'm having to start my tours earlier in the morning these days just to make it back to the car in daylight.
Up on top of Arrowhead we watched the clouds just pouring down over the Chiwaukums down into those bowls. I can only imagine how windy it was! Occasionally strong gusts on Arrowhead, but not too bad overall. Looks like you got the brunt of the easterly flow.
Your first sentence is an apt description of the day! Fun day with you guys

Roaring Ridge was good as well, albeit the longer flat approach. Powder was found from 2,900 - ridgetop with random wind affect on more easterly exposures.
Zipper? If you don't mind me asking. Thanks, John
