Might have seen you going up the Windy Gully just as I was skiing onto Diamond Head's NE face from the county line route. The 2nd chute is not obvious from the plateau as there are some trees to ski through first.
Check out Wenatchee Outdoors guide book for backcountry skiing for the Diamond Head East Peak route. They've got a good map of the whole Tronsen basin. http://www.justgetout.net/Wenatchee/

Hey, I was thinking of skiing in the Stuart range over the next few days but that slide you set off is kind of unnerving! Its hard to tell from the photos with the lighting, any more info on it? (length, width, depth, weak layer, bed surface, steepness etc?)

It is skiable, if you're skiing super hero Dan Helmstadter.
I was kidding you know.
uh oh! bring on the crowds!
Fascinating to watch the Heli extraction in such swift action. I only caught a couple photos from the ridge. Thanks for sharing that Martin and thanks for your assistance!!
Oh yeah, the Stuart Glacier Couloir. It is skiable, if you're skiing super hero Dan Helmstadter. Check out his video from a couple years ago:

I was just happy to have been able to receive your text and get the word to Fergie and others on SPART to initiate the rescue. Knowing how long the process takes for rescuers to respond I was glad 3 of us were sent as a hasty team in quick fashion.
We were unaware SMR was in the vicinity training until part way up the Phantom when we were alerted on radio. What luck to have them already placed right where they were needed.
I was concerned it would be a tough and long extric...

John, I'm not sure I want to encourage this, but that second photo makes it look like you could ski from the West Ridge notch. Must be an illusion.
Oh my. Glad everyone is ok and hope you all recover fast. Great to have the help nearby.
Speedy recovery, Akarchin. You were exceptionally lucky to have Martin around: he would have hauled you to safety even if the chopper had been unable to lift you. N
Was up on the standard Stump tour late afternoon the 12th. The snow that has exposure to the sun in the small trees and clearcuts of a typical Stump run, I would not have characterized as mank. At least not at that point of the day on Sunday. It was unexpectedly springlike snow: wettish, big grains. Judged by the measure of spring snow it was decent. Usually it wasn't particularly bottomless. In the best sections, there was enough of a partway down but dissolving crust to keep soft stuff on...
Nice job guys!
Thanks for the bootpack, we rode it on Tuesday the 7th. I think we were the 3rd party that week.
Impressive to shovel-ski that last couloir! Yikes.
Our crux for the trip was figuring out which tracks to follow to the couloir, as they seemed to go all over the valley...
Beautiful zone, amazing line, can't wait to do it again.

wow. this is a scary story ari, and i'm glad both you and yak-nam are ok. thanks for sharing it. lots of positive vibes to you for a speedy recovery.
Taking a major injury to at the very least, reduce injury to your wife, and more likely, safe her life, I have to say - Bravo. You sir are a proper gentleman!
Let us all hope we would do the same for our wife, friends and even a stranger. Do repair quickly and lets see you on the snow this spring!

no coverage problems really. the approach went pretty smoothly and the narrowest choke in the couloir was near the top and was about ten feet wide. the rest was plenty wide
Sweet! That's getting to be a Cascade classic!
Doesn't look as filled in as in previous TRs. Any problems with choke points or thin coverage?

BD 01 tele binding...likely due to movement in the tele inserts in the ski. Probably not the binding's fault.
Fantastic! Love it...
What kind of binding broke?

Tough news, Ari - though it sounds like it was a good outcome all things considered. *Very* glad to hear you and the missus are home safe.

Nice work, all.
I am very glad to hear that things were not worse.
Heal quickly quickly.

So glad everybody is safe and home with only minor (hopefully) injuries! Sounds like some lucky events but also some great people thinking and working fast, including you two! Welcome to the gimp side. I know some fantastic surgeons and great physical therapists if you need some recommendations, and I hope you like biking :)
Ari: I'm so sorry to hear of you and Yak-Nam's accident. I am sure she is quite proud of you for saving here from harm's way.
Way to go Martin.
Ari, Heal fast.
Good vibes to you all.

Thanks guys. Yes, Yak-Nam and I are still working through how if any of these small details went differently, the outcome would have been far more troublesome.

Great work by all involved, including Ari and his wife for keeping their cool on what could have been a long wait.

I saw the page for this -- so glad SMR & Martin's crew were on hand! Thanks for writing it up and I'm glad Guardian was able to fly in a pull you out -- that would have been a long haul back to the parking lot on the ground.
Heal fast.

never thought of the whippet as an avalanche safety tool...
Crack of noon start, after fine snow safety instruction at the WAC from guest Forest McBrian. Toured from Commonwealth to Hyak, with return on the lifts. Travel was fast; well-hammered uptrack and well packed road to Gold Creek made it easy. Rain/warming crust all elevations/aspects up to ~4+k, clearings too (not tree drips). Half inch of new in the higher reaches. Skiing was breakable on the S side, but not abysmal. Less breakable under drippy trees. Groomers skied better on the way back. ~3:15...
Looks like some good times on Shuksan the past few days.
Glad everyone made it out OK. Any more details about this accident?
Glad to see the rescue went well. We had worried thoughts near I-90. Heal well, impromptu birdman! Big thank yous to SMR/King County SAR!
Nice tour on a blue-and-graybird day; good photos.
Very nice! Way to take full advantage of the weather and make it happen.
Thanks! At least rock season is about a month away. You don't hear of too many avalanche accidents at Sunshine Wall.
Great Trip! Its hard not to spend more time in those mountains when you end up looking at them so much.
There is still one sizable snag across the road that would require a chainsaw to clear in order to get a sled up there. It just so happens I know a guy...
Great line, great fun, with such a long approach I'm glad this one worked out.

Nice John.
Do you have any more pictures of colchuck you could share with me?

Liking the cool trip and the awesome pics(Stuart, viewed most every day from my living room window, is my totem) but not the drama. Glad you're OK. Y'all be careful out there!
Looks like a great trip, but I have to agree with Kyle, you should stay off steep snow for awhile, with a twofer under your belt number three might be pushing it.
Yeah, I can't believe you ate Marcus' bakery treat that one time Andy...jeez. :)
yeah Andy, great story, and love that ski! we were up there a few days before, and your words of the trepid start ring true. (I figure you're cool with it, but if this gratuitous cross-post offends, let me know and I'll delete.)
and Erik, glad you enjoyed the route. I posted a delayed and brief TR w/ a bunch of pics over here.

As I recall, last time you were asked to buy me a piece and then you ate it on the drive home... or something like that.

I thought I heard voices mid morning when I was drying out my clothes in my tent, I poked my head outside half way thinking I might see John coming for a visit. Larry's tent was perfectly still and I didn't see anyone, so I thought I was imagining things. I was running my stove, so it was very hard to hear if there was really someone going by. Sorry to miss saying Hi! It...
Fun tour and write-up, Becky. I went because I was told there would be cake. Last time, I didn't receive a piece. And I was told ...
I copy Marcus. Reasonable snow when mank is expected is always a pleasure.
Nice Beck! That's why I'm constantly lowering my expectations.
Hell ya Sam. Solid solo outing right there.
