Hey Larry! Thanks for the PM -- sickness and other events conspired to keep me from trying to catch up to you two on Monday. Great pics :)

I've skied this area twice over the last couple years, both times on a deep snowpack. The first time we simply parked along Hwy 35 where the Hwy crosses Hell Roaring Creek and went straight up the creek drainage. If the snowpack is deep this is a very direct route with very little route finding. Last season we parked at the Pocket Creek Sno-Park and approached via Gunsight Ridge, this route is very easy, but much longer.
Great photos of a great area.

I met the owner whilst up at a "worK" conference at Banff maybe 2 years ago. Very nice guy, I think his name is Larry. He seemed quite young but very experienced as a guide, businessman and also general contractor. He described paying heli companies to ferry stuff in during the summer so he could do construction. This place is an example of an interesting business niche. They also have a summer hiking and climbing instruction season I think. I was lu...

Ambitious! Way to go.
I was thinking about doing this, but heading up Gumjuwac Trail (my map calls it Lookout Mnt trail) and then doing laps on the clearcut off the saddle down into Hellroaring creek. I guess we would still hit the terrible bushwhack on the way home, but wondering what you think of this approach?

Wow. So, I'm new to the NW, not to mention Canada. How does one begin to make a reservation for such a fine place?
Too much fun. I'd kill for a day like that.
I don't know about that ski area idea. I heard that Jim and Lou Whittaker hiked that mountain and decided it was too steep to ski...
This looks like a real paradise and such good weather! Gorgeous scenery. Brings back fond memories of skiing in places like that. Not anymore for these old bones. We were happy to make it up 700' to our new "low" campsite on Sasse Ridge yesterday in all the fresh new snow.

Thank you so much for your report."So we bailed." It shows strength and skill to make the decision to pull the plug and get home safe, and glad you did, and took the time to post it. Cheers
Our crew is pretty cohesive and there isn't any group dynamic things that get in the way of making decisions like that. We have bailed lots over the years and...

Nice work guys! Looking forward to getting back out with you again Ron on another outing soon.......
Nice work, that's an ambitious trip to do on foot power alone!
Excellent summary Ron, I'll have to add that while I've scoured the map for a direct route to Lookout from the hwy I'll pass on anything other than the Gumjuwac trail until we get a winter with a much deeper snowpack in lower elevations. The intense bushwhacking otherwise not worth it, and I think I added a few new profanities to my vocabulary at times, especially that traverse out.
I loved the adventure and routefinding though, and the ski terrain up there excites me...

Thanks for the report. I needed that.
Yeah, so much for my powder stash.
If you wanted fresh tracks on Saturday, you had to take a number. In fact most of the tourers I saw up there did have numbers. And they didn't seem to be paying attention to them. I paused at the top for...

I'm starting to think this peak is getting too crowded.

I'm not sure what you mean by the deep col. But the angry man rock formation does stick out from thunders south ridge.
WOW! that is a really great looking cat... :D

Have looked across at that area so many times from the Adamants/Esplanade and always naively assumed it's too cold/shallow/windblown/persistent weak layered despite its incredible beauty and terrain. Glad I was wrong.
Incredible area, thank you for sharing.
If you have more photos, don't be afraid to share!

Lrudholm, we skied a little couliee off of the Nimbus side of Thunder. This angry man that you speak of, is it the small pinnacle sitting in a deep col on the south ridge of Thunder?
Such a cool place, I like that people have been getting up there. How long did the trip in take (to the lake)? Somebody let me know the next time your going up :)
Thanks kath!
Yes, that was me. I dislocated my shoulder and tore the labrum on NY eve at Crystal. At the time I thought it would put me out of commission as I could hardly use it for a couple of weeks thereafter but the rehab exercises are really helping. I have to be careful with my left arm, I don't arrest any left falls with it and can't lift my body weight with it so no climbing, but otherwise so far so good.

Was the shoulder you guys rode by the angry man or on the nimbus side of thunder?
nice. thx for the update from snocrummie. been wanting to check out that 1st area.
whatever floats your boat to get out of the canyon
you can go strait out the canyon wall skinning or most likely bootpacking , or skin to the to top of the canyon at mississippi head. if you go up to the head, you get an extra bonus run.
either way getting out is the crux of the trip

Awesome photos - looks really nice through there! To get back from the canyon, do you usually head overland roughly via the Timberline Trail, or skin back up to the glacier and ski out?
great pix .. love the pooch ..
i thought you injured your shoulder and would be out for a while? someone else? anyhow great to see you ripping it up ...

Niko - Chris went to N. Dakota in October, just got home last week. I've been around but haven't skied much this season 'til now.
altasnob - thanks!
Robie - other than not going specifically to Paradise, not sure I went against everyone's advice. Stayed above 6K! Some other folks I'd talked to said conditions were good above 6K around Stevens and on the East side of the crest too, so figured 6K would be the magic number and it sure...

Good to see you on the slopes, guys (and dog): someone told me you had gone to Wyoming. N
Well said, CSW. It was great meeting you guys! Always game to break trail. What a day!
Email sent.

Hey ,It looks like you were amply rewarded for going against sizable opinion.
Less drive to boot and doggies get to play. I'll have to remember that.

Thanks for sharing, and nice going everyone - it's inspiring to hear how everyone played their part well, especially the rescuers. You guys rock!
What happened to Yak-Nam was my worst fear when I dropped into Slot on my splitboard last year - I was concerned about it being too icy to hold an edge or to recover if I caught an edge. It turned out to be soft and no problem, but not having poles, a whippet, or an ice axe handy while riding, it could get hairy fast... I'm glad th...

For broken tele binders like that, you can also just tape or lash the boot directly to the top of the ski for a makeshift alpine binding. You can actually ski on it. My ski buddy did ~3000ft of vert like so. Just had to unweight the ski that had the straps running underneath it in the icier stuff.
love the action pic with the dog
Nice!
Can't wait to ski Hood more this spring.
