What a fantastic day I heard I missed. One of my favorites in the area. Glad you were able to join Victor and Jake on their escapade. Victor and I skied it in the spring some 4 years ago after seeing it from the chair peak circumnavigation. Great views from all angles!
It was difficult saying no to many ski invites and having to stay home and nurse day 2 of a nasty head cold on such a spectacular day. When Jake called to tell me how amazing the tour was and how the conditions were of...

Pics look pretty good to me, wish I was out enjoying it! As a snowboarder and having to leash the board in resorts I also admit I don't take one touring with me. Golden rule, don't let go of zee boards!

Good eye Silas. It's a small ~4" or so crown likely from wind loading on lee slopes (ridges were pretty scoured in places). This was a reasonably common site throughout the day, with no larger instabilities witnessed.
Sweet photos! In the first skier action shot, is that a small avy crown in the near background?
Or is it a traversing ski track that brushed a bit of rock? What's the story?

I have skied Mt Margret a couple of times over the years. I always went in on the road, up to where the summer trail starts, then skinned up the clearcut to the uncut trees, went up to the top of the ridge and skied the trees. What is the "slot" you mention on the west side of Wolfe creek? Thanks, Pete
It sounds like the layer 7 ft. down may be the pre-MLK January crust. On the arm a slide that big would be horrific at best... glad to see they're ontop of it.
That crust was fairly manageable this morning (Friday) up at the pass. It might have dried out and gotten more brittle with the low temps. With the new snow on top it skis pretty good - jump turns weren't really needed where I was.
andybrnr and co...please wake up earlier and set that phantom skin track for us (getting) old farts who have to make work by 9:30! Common, you're in college! :D Over the last 5/6 years I've pounded that thing in to 5k many times from 6am...

Nice photos. Whereabouts were you wandering?
Glad to see you're still skiing and not working. Jill put in a good word for you with your mom at Stevens yesterday. ;)
A great link to the TR. It's intersting to see the lake side of The Watchman and Hillman Peak. Having skied the opposite side and looking down to the lake. ;)
i'm hoping this is a good sign for blewett pass tomorrow
Saw your truck Mike. I skinned a couple laps on Castle while waiting for 3 to load, very nice. Got on 3 about 10 minutes after they started loading and skied four untracked runs down liftline and Johnson's to Rock Garden. Tomorrow should be great, I think all the snow blew to Stemilt Basin.
Love it there! Both times we tried it was hard ice, but beautiful unusual terrain. We, too, were amazed at the rapid settlement of all that loose powdery snow from the past 2 weeks, in such short order, on the far east slopes of the Cascades. It has created a nice supportive base to keep the skis away from the rocks. Thanks for the post and pics.

bs are you wearing that vest/backpack thingy that north face makes?
nope, just a vest over a shell, one of my many backcountry fashion faux pas. it was quite windy & stormy at the top of the run and i didn't feel like taking the shell off to add a layer for warmth while we dug a snowpit and transitioned.

The real hazard; the sled in from Ross Lake.....you should try that some time :)
That must have been an epic snowmobile ride. We spent all day digging out snowmobiles in Leavenworth on Sunday. My back is still recovering. We should have just gone to Stevens, but powder greed got the best of us.
Next time you are up in the Wa Pass...

I removed a couple of posts here. Trying to force/shame folks into sharing information isn't really okay here, professional or recreational.
As always, thanks for the nice video Jeff. Wish I could make it over to meet you for a day of skiing.....actually made it WA Pass (Blue Lake Area) on Sunday. As you suggest, stability was pretty good considering the depth of fresh snow. The sun helped stabilize the upper new snow and uncover a few clues to the whereabouts of the 4 missing hikers.
Thank you Mattkski - What clues were uncovered?

You missed some damn good bacon oatmeal! Sunday was great; got in three more laps before packing up and retreating to the relative comfort of a warm, dry car.

Doug - nice shot at the cut. Is this the longest Seattle tour of the January 2012 storm?
Thanks for the first half uptrack Andy!

Much thanks for the intelligent skin track, We had already intended to do that route today but your track made it so much easier. Just a great day and well worth getting abused by winds on the open areas of the knob.
Thanks for the good words, Robie. In my opinion that is like the best compliment a person can receive! The joy of reading an intuitive skin...
I have had to re-learn that lesson on the cliff band there a couple of times now. Good choice to climb back up and over. I am sure there are some ways to survive that cliff band but from below it looks like there are a lot of other possibilities as well.
Yes. Sorry about that. I was writing the TR while talking to someone about Harrison Street and got a bit of brain crosstalk.
It was a nice place. There were lots of line available that didn't show any signs of instability and would have made really fun runs. It isn't super steep, but there are steeper sections. I think it might be better to access from the ventilator as that would eliminate dealing with traversing the Stevens Pass Nordic Center....

Hi Robert,
I don't have a map in front of me, do you mean Henry Creek? Essentially the rib above the railroad tunnel ventilator pull out? looking forward to pics. Seems like a nice, safe call, find!
Thanks,
John

Good to run into you again Andrew.
we stayed a little longer until exhaustion and the wind drove us down one last time. Skied some steeper lines and couldn't get anything to move except sluffage (or sloughage..? (the adult spelling)) Good to get out and sweat in the snow... a nice break from my lift bound posse of six year olds, and seven year old charge - fine skiers all of them.
Lots of people out, more skiers than snow shoers, a pleasant inverse ratio, especially when bombing...

Good skiing with you guys. I posted another TR before I saw yours. 10 more inches overnight - wish I had another day off work!
That looks like some great skiing! I was in Garmisch last weekend it has been dumping for 3 days straight, over a meter of snow fell on the first day! Amazing tree skiing
Good bumping into you again Scott. That zone is seriously fun with a great combo of pillows, trees and fall-line skiing.
Yeah, he's a nice guy -- Mike, I think? Two of his dogs are brother/sister akitas and are usually towing him uphill on his snowshoes.
I saw him a few weekends in a row up there last year and he seemed like a pretty nice guy when I chatted with him.
He is usually packing more than just dogs. Wear your bright cloths.
Nice!
I've bumped into that guy with the dogs a few times.
