Nice TR Scott! What's the story with that board?
Hey Don,

Down to what elevation did you ski? And what was the snow depth? Was thinking of the Barometer Mountain traverse. Wondering if there's enough snow low down to make it a go?
Lots of people out and about in today. Saw a number of climbers on the summit of Chair Peak

As others have noted, found anything you could (and could not) want, including pow

Glad we went elsewhere in the Pass area where there were no trains of people. We saw a few snowshoers who briefly converged on our route, but no body heat buildup. But that didn't help when it started to rain...

We looked at some east slopes but we could see snow plumes arcing over them and thought better of it, which seemed in the end like a fine choice since the west glades we hit were so sweet!
Skyline Haute route?  Nevr heard that, but I Like it!

Cool variation John and gang.
looking across from alpy there was a train of folks moving up the valley towards bryant with numerous skin tracks. chair peak had one classic track beautifully set to the col. amazing looking
East aspect slope down to Kendall Peak Lakes was the best skiing of the day for us.
Wasn't it an amazing day?  I think we passed you three when you were skinning up near the gully on Roosevelt, the powder was too good to stop and chat!
Excellent.

It definitely went from "that was awesome" to "WTF?" in about 15 minutes some time between 11:30 and 12:30.  It might have been all the body heat from the 20,000 people in Commonwealth Basin.

What temperature was your wax?

Warm.  Pretty sure it wasn't the wax, since partners who hadn't waxed yet this season were just as bad off or worse.
We followed your tracks out to the end if Ice Caves trail and decided we had enough of side-hilling on ice; using discretion based on experience, we had a reasonably good ski back.
I've seen snow as gluey as today at Paradise, but can't recall it ever changing so much, so fast.  The morning's tolerable old powder on NW treed aspects at about 5K became almost non-kinetic in the time it took to skin up less than 500vf after the 3rd run.   :(
What temperature was your wax?
What a fantastic day I heard I missed. One of my favorites in the area. Glad you were able to join Victor and Jake on their escapade. Victor and I skied it in the spring some 4 years ago after seeing it from the chair peak circumnavigation. Great views from all angles!

It was difficult saying no to many ski invites and having to stay home and nurse day 2 of a nasty head cold on such a spectacular day.  When Jake called to tell me how amazing the tour was and how the conditions were of...
Pics look pretty good to me, wish I was out enjoying it!  As a snowboarder and having to leash the board in resorts I also admit I don't take one touring with me.  Golden rule, don't let go of zee boards!
author=telemack link=topic=23435.msg99364#msg99364 date=1327791510]In the first skier action shot, is that a small avy crown in the near background?

Good eye Silas.  It's a small ~4" or so crown likely from wind loading on lee slopes (ridges were pretty scoured in places).  This was a reasonably common site throughout the day, with no larger instabilities witnessed.
Sweet photos!  In the first skier action shot, is that a small avy crown in the near background?
Or is it a traversing ski track that brushed a bit of rock? What's the story?
-tx for the good post-
Killer shots!

Thanks for posting!

I have skied Mt Margret a couple of times over the years. I always went in on the road, up to where the summer trail starts, then skinned  up the clearcut to the uncut trees, went up to the top of the ridge and skied the trees. What is the "slot" you mention on the west side of Wolfe creek? Thanks, Pete
It sounds like the layer 7 ft. down may be the pre-MLK January crust. On the arm a slide that big would be horrific at best... glad to see they're ontop of it.
That crust was fairly manageable this morning (Friday) up at the pass.  It might have dried out and gotten more brittle with the low temps.  With the new snow on top it skis pretty good - jump turns weren't really needed where I was.

andybrnr and co...please wake up earlier and set that phantom skin track for us (getting) old farts who have to make work by 9:30!  Common, you're in college! :D  Over the last 5/6 years I've pounded that thing in to 5k many times from 6am...
Nice photos.  Whereabouts were you wandering?
Glad to see you're still skiing and not working. Jill put in a good word for you with your mom at Stevens yesterday.  ;)
A great link to the TR.  It's intersting to see the lake side of The Watchman and Hillman Peak. Having skied the opposite side and looking down to the lake.  ;)

Looks like an awesome trip!
i'm hoping this is a good sign for blewett pass tomorrow
Saw your truck Mike. I skinned a couple laps on Castle while waiting for 3 to load, very nice. Got on 3 about 10 minutes after they started loading and skied four untracked runs down liftline and Johnson's to Rock Garden. Tomorrow should be great, I think all the snow blew to Stemilt Basin.
Love it there!  Both times we tried it was hard ice, but beautiful unusual terrain.   We, too, were amazed at the rapid settlement of all that loose powdery snow from the past 2 weeks, in such short order, on the far east slopes of the Cascades.  It has created a nice supportive base to keep the skis away from the rocks.  Thanks for the post and pics.

bs are you wearing that vest/backpack thingy that north face makes?

nope, just a vest over a shell, one of my many backcountry fashion faux pas.  it was quite windy & stormy at the top of the run and i didn't feel like taking the shell off to add a layer for warmth while we dug a snowpit and transitioned.

Couple shots of you Sam.

I'm guessing it's a poor snow year in Ethiopia.

Heh -- yeah, not so much...

The real hazard; the sled in from Ross Lake.....you should try that some time :)

That must have been an epic snowmobile ride.  We spent all day digging out snowmobiles in Leavenworth on Sunday.  My back is still recovering.  We should have just gone to Stevens, but powder greed got the best of us.

Next time you are up in the Wa Pass...

I removed a couple of posts here.  Trying to force/shame folks into sharing information isn't really okay here, professional or recreational.
As always, thanks for the nice video Jeff.  Wish I could make it over to meet you for  a day of skiing.....actually  made it WA Pass (Blue Lake Area) on Sunday. As you suggest, stability was pretty good considering the depth of fresh snow. The real hazard; the sled in from Ross Lake.....you should try that some time :) Hope to see more of your videos this season. SM

I forgot to mention that if I see you ever post a "full disclosure report" on this site......next time I see y...

The sun helped stabilize the upper new snow and uncover a few clues to the whereabouts of the 4 missing hikers.

Thank you Mattkski - What clues were uncovered?

Thanks for adding the great photos to my otherwise useless thread, Ben and John!

Brian, stoked you guys liked the area so much that you decided to come back and stay a while. Sorry I couldn't make it for breakfast. Hope your Sunday went well.

You missed some damn good bacon oatmeal!  Sunday was great; got in three more laps before packing up and retreating to the relative comfort of a warm, dry car.

Doug - nice shot at the cut. Is this the longest Seattle tour of the January 2012 storm?
Thanks for the first half uptrack Andy!

Much thanks for the intelligent skin track, We had already intended to do that route today  but your track made it so much easier. Just a great day and well worth getting abused by winds on the open areas of the knob.

Thanks for the good words, Robie.  In my opinion that is like the best compliment a person can receive!  The joy of reading an intuitive skin...
