No rope on the way up?  Reminds me of this Hummel gem from way back when:  http://www.cascadeclassics.org/MountRainier/IngrahamDirect/Winter02/IngrahamDirect,Winter02.htm

That's a good read! I'll freely admit that the glacier skiing game is not one of strict risk avoidance. Being unroped in any fashion on a crevassed glacier could have serious consequen...

Amar - thanks for the additional info! We hadn't examined the forecast quite to the same level of detail but it certainly seems reasonable that higher elevations might not experience the east-west pressure differential in the same way as crest level locations. The summit at midday on the 5th had only a bit of breeze - probably 15mph or less.

Jason - thanks for adding that picture, nice shot! We are the party of 3 in the upper bowl of the Ingraham. The parties above actually climb...
nice to hear the story from the rest of your day andy. Here's a vid from the heavy metal crew http://vimeo.com/36534944
Good work!

Thanks for sharing guys.... :D
After all those dawn patrol and moonlight laps I did from WT Hut, I think mabey I'm ready for Vertical Fest.
Nice report, as usual, Amar. It made for a nice lunchtime read today.

Thank you for capturing these largely unseen marvels on the mountain (the blowing snow back-dropped by a beautiful sunset and the serac fall/avalanche on the Wilson Glacier).

I wish I could be out there more with you instead of sitting at my desk job.

Great stuff!

Maybe I should take up para-skiing too??
Ya nice work!  Dan's probably skied that face more that anyone.

Scott Wicklund, Alecapone and I climbed the BYS following tracks from the day before, think it was Eric Werly and friend.  Some spicy climbing, both fun and scary.  Ski down was really fun!

Few pics
nice pix amar .. esp of the blowing snow
awesome .. way to get er done!

wonder who those guys were .. anyone know?
Awesome stuff guys.

Alecapone, wow, that's cool stuff right there. Bet that was a cool air show!
Nice guys!!

Was up there the other day with Eric Svege. I was going to write a report just to share a few pictures of the air show we got to enjoy.... just been a bit busy, and words fail me for such an awesome location, climb, ride, and the crew I was able to do it with.

Some where from around the top of Dan's NW X connection.

Awesome to get the Raindawg in winter. When I was over on Whitman Crest, I counted 11 people in this image of the Emmons. Pretty cool to watch you guys while having breakfast.

Winds: at ~5400-6400 in the Tatoosh on the 4th, it was really really windy. Like whip your pack straps into your face so hard it stings, and almost blow you over.  We were looking accross to the Muir snowfield and wondering if people were getting hammered.  But maybe these specific conditions ameliorated the winds higher up!  interesting.
Thanks, Oyvind, it was great to see you, too! And thanks all for your comments.

Here is the rest of the pictures:

Great job skiing from the summit in February, thanks for the report.

It's nice to hear that the ID route is in decent shape for skiing. I was planning to head up there on Friday-Saturday, but something held me back once my potential partner bailed and I would have been solo. Right decision at the time, but regretting it since then, since it's so rare to get an excellent weather window like that in mid-winter with light winds.

Apparently 36 summit climbers (includi...
Now I know what to get Andy for Christmas  ;)
Nice work on a huge day you two......I'm liking the old school piton, nut and v thread rappel anchors, Matt. Trips like this make the tours I've done with you guys seem sooo mellow!
Watch it with the Enya smears! Some of us on the edge of dementia have trouble with things like words and love all the ahhhs.
great smiles, great writing!  Who needs pictures??
Fantastic writing too Becky :).  Glad you guys took advantage of the good weather.
Absolutely sensational pictures of one of our favorite places.  Always talk about setting up a multiday camp, never come through.  Hopefully the greatest moonlight shot of Shuksan ever will be enough inspiration.  Thanks for sharing.
Man, would I love to do this in good snow.  Mike and I contemplated whether or not you can catch the trifecta of good skiing, safe conditions, and an adequate lake crossing/road ski for a day trip on skis.  Mike's chin up attitude and excellent photography downplay the survival skiing element.  The ridiculous became the sublime, however, on the finale - 3.5 miles of snomo tracked FS road that had been in the sun during the day and now was an FIS course with runnels downhill i...
Oops. Sorry, Mack. Date added.
Good tour, good info.  What date?

TOUGH SNOW HAIKU
Take note:  a bad day
Ski touring is better than
A good day elsewhere.
BURLY. Thank you for posting. More please :).
That was one of the best reads I've had in a long, long time.
I couldn't have explained it any better.Snow was poor but company was good.
I started with a group of four up the NW couloir yesterday. Then Dansanity showed up and dragged me up the
North shoulder and down the North Face. Very scary and firm but manageable. Ben from Glacier counted 27 switchbacks from the creek. The skin out was almost as gnarly as the ski.

AWESOME! Well done Doug and team!

Thanks Becky! Looks like you had slightly nicer snow down lower on the mountain. Definitely a nice weekend to be out regardless!
Nice work! Last year we only had a 50m, I think, and we were sure it wouldn't touch down; it's nice to know that a 70m is likely the best tool. Good on you for enduring those winds for so long on the approach!
Nice TR and photos.  Good times!
I think its pretty close to the same route, but I think the lost kid may have gone up to the arm sooner than Don did, but don't know for sure.
Alecapone - yeah, there was just enough room to sneak through on skis.  You definitely didn't want to get going very fast.  I think it would be a great summer ski when filled in better and you have good corn.  Jake The Brit shared his trip photos and I'm inspired to go do it his way (up Asgaard, ski around in the upper basin, down this gully and out colchuck gl.)  Here are his pics:  https://picasaweb.google.com/104952785231857279993/DragontailPeakCircumnav#

Funny about the...
Helluva trip!  Na gnar-gnar.  Totally gnar.
Is this the same route the kid did while lost in the baker BC a week or two ago?

I been trying to figure out his path. I imagine it kinda like the 'jeffie maps' from tha family circle.
I must say. You get high originalty points for the angle on that cliche' bridge shot! I'e got it fromt both sides and below in all kinds of lighting. But never from up there. Bravo! Route details?

That gulley looks bonier then when we rode it on the summer soltice this year.

Thanks for the nice comments on the photos! That's all Pete's skill! :)
Wow, thanks for the great pictures, the turns look wonderful as well.
Nice job Scott and Matt.  I'll second Ryan's comment, that line sure was looking good the other week!
Great to see you guys on Saturday.  Nice tour, really dig the third to last picture.  Happy Anniversary.
Mike, you're taking the county thing to the next level. I don't think anyone will  look at a map to surmise our best snow was in King County, our next-best snow in Snohomish, and our absolute worst snow in , ahem, sunny Chelan County. No matter, we can keep the myth alive (ala denial of climate change) through misinformation.

Dicey, fun running into your group. Gabriel seems to have figured out something that eludes us in finding such charming travel companions. Nothing char...
Wow that is a big day. It is nice to see that get explored.
