would have been fun to run into you Steve - - I do believe we're due for a nwh ski soon, no?
nice one Ron. Ah yes, so terrible(y) sweet!
Here's one more from our Sunday Service. Turn up the volume.

Hey Pat, Nice meeting you. Glad to see you got some good turns. We did really well up at first bowl in steelhead, didn't see you two on the way out after dark so figured you got out ok. Take it easy
Thanks for the skintrack. It was well preserved overnight.

Interesting, thanks for the clara-fication. I didn't check the tele, since I was focused on skiing the crest. Then east of Blewett did not experience the warming from the short warm front passage between the moisture rich cold lows. Now that I think about it, it does not seem like the area even got much of the rain that slammed the crest Tues/Wed? At least above 6000 ft, whch woul...
Thanks so much for the report - we can all learn something from this. And so glad you folks dodged it. Here is a sobering column test in the same area: http://vimeo.com/37542023
For what it is worth - here's some things I think about on trips:
I print out a copy of the NWAC report and bring it with me. It forces a trailhead discussion with the group - what is our plan? And you need to check in through out the day.

I think that thin crust under Sunday night's snow, 3-4", was from rime that was widely deposited by wind on Saturday night. I found it to be widespread on Sunday at mid to low elevations on windward and exposed terrain. I was surprised to find it on Sunday morning after the stellar conditions Saturday. Telemetry indicated no warming during that period.

So, you guys get face shots all day long in a wooded zone and then opt to name it what you did?!? That's just begging for inappropriate punnage and innuendo...

Icicle Creek Canyon is even prettier in the winter than in the summer.
Hey, Lisa and I were there Sat. too and I agree! We didn't ski up the Icicle but we X-Ced at Sleeping Lady and the view of Wedge etc. was so fine. First time using groomed tracks in ages.

Took a quick tour up through Clara Lake this afternoon, to see what the snow was like. My thought was that there would be signs of instability. I was surprised, when I skied out into the Clara lake bowl, and discovered snowmobile and snowshoe tracks all over the place, I guess they don't read the papers, or look at avalanche forecasts. I bumped into a couple of guys that skied down fro...
Just don't forget your Snowpark pass. Dropped by recently to see the ticket writer in action.
Yikes. Too bad for all those who signed up. Glad I decided to not sign up at the last minute.
Sadly, the terrain here doesn't lend itself to airing the whole mountain so we were "forced" to make some turns in between hits. ;)
You guys do any skiing? Or just air the whole mountain? - Look fun and thanks for the report. Amabalis definitely isn't first to mind, but glad you reminded me of it for when the avy is high or I take beginners.
I avoided the sun like I owed it money and was out of there before noon. In the trees there wasn't much change - heavier than yesterday but not crusted. The storm snow was still in the trees. As the I neared the clearings I noticed some spots where there was dripping from trees but I probably only saw one or two tree bombs while I was there.
Nice. How strong was the sun up there today?? Much affect on the snow if in the sun or are the cold temps enough to keep the sun from creating a crust.
Thanks!
Thanks!
I regret to report that Kendallish was just as terrible this morning as your pix show that it was yesterday. The only difference being the oppressive sunshine.
Saw you skinning up just before we launched our first run. Sweet and deep up there
Nice photos.
Skied Snoqualmie Mtn trees from 5,000 ft this morning. Skiing that much pow in sunshine is so much fin.
A little sun affected on lower elevations by 11:00. I wish I had the whole day off.

- I know!! Hard to sit in front of a computer screen when you know there is that much awesomeness to be had up there! Such fun terrain for when it dumps. Jealous you got a second day up there. The countdown begins for next weekend!! Fingers crossed for more snow and cold temps.
As Rusty Knees put it, must have for conditions like that,
1-Snorkel (one for the dog and one for me too)...

Snow is sick up there right now!
We rode the busses out to volunteer as sweeps for the race.
In Leavenworth, we regrouped and opted to drive out Icicle Creek Canyon to the road block. There, we donned our cross country skis and got in a 14mi out/back trip.

Sweet Vid!
No,THANK YOU for jumping in and helping break trail back out of the North Side!
We went back today and the big splitboard crew that stayed the night at the lake, payed the skin track break fee in the currency of an 18 pack of Rainier ( that some how they could not manage to drink). Thinking about quiting my real job...

I use windows movie maker. It's free to download and super easy to use.
Nice!
What program do you use to edit your videos? I got a Gopro video camera for Christmas and haven't found anything that is simple and easy to use.

I was one of the 600 who went back home early. I wasn't too disappointed - already looking forward to next year.
I feel sorry for the organizers - they must have already had their Aid stations set up, barbecues and bonfires ready, etc, and had to dismantle them and send them back down the roads.
Even the retreat was well organized and quick. From the time they pulled the trigger and cancelled to getting back on a shuttle bus, I be not a half hour pas...

Z, Went skiing with Buck last night and he told of your story. Glad things worked out!
Probably best they didn't go. Skied with wife and doggie towards Haney Meadow from the upper Tronsen plow-out via the FS Rd 7245 aka the JFK(Johnson, Fraser. Kaatz). Winds were strong, trees were swaying and snow was slabby above the road-end. Chris H reported foot-thick slabs breaking as he and friend skied the talus slopes above the road. My hands got very cold until I put on the mega-gloves.
I guess that was the reason for all the charter buses. Had me worried. Mission was vacant today, though. And they got the Lib running. Bummer that a cross country ski race is so dependent on a lift running.

I was totally gripped. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks Dan,
No, I've not been up that road. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's more or less a standard snomobile route. A bit farther down the road is the route to Hex Mountain, which you can spot by the signed and plowed parking area on the west side of the road. Or maybe that's where you went!

I will be thinking about this post next time I venture into "familiar turf." That photo of Ms. P standing in the pit she was buried in is sobering. Glad you are all safe!

Can anybody tell me how steep the slopes are that slid?
My guess is the 1st one rolls from 27ish degrees to 32ish. It is a near constant concern back there. Have had it go on me a time or two. I was never carried. The 2nd one...34 max? Now I gotta go measure them. Glad all are safe!

Thanks for posting this report. It has given me a lot to think about.

I've never skied that area and know that pics can be deceptive.
Thanks. This discussion and the Weak Layers section are a great resource.

You have done the community a great service and continued a precedent started by Marcus with the Phantom slide. Too many incidents get unreported out of embarrassment. There is great appreciation for this kind of imformation being shared.

Here is a good photo to indicate the snow depth in the trees heading up the rib on the south side Salmon la Sac creek. The snow stuck to the tree indicates wind direction and old mans beard still attached shows how much more sheltered this route is than just 50 feet away where the snow depth is more than double.
