Well... someone went up there and cut up the tree. We ran into some climbers about 30 minutes from the car on Sunday that warned us about the tree. By the time we got to the spot, the tree was already cut up! Thanks to whoever cut it up because I was attempting to get some turns and catch a Sounders game all in one day.
Awsome day! Thanks Bird, for the motivation! The edit turned out sweet!
Those are some great shots Freight, especially the first one!

It'll beer melted out within the dayDue to inebriated urinating skiers...? ;)
I hate how we get pointed out for this, when every trip in the summer, and I mean every trip there were parents, kids and hikers stomping off trail with nothing said. I saw 2 dogs around pan point, and young teens climbing rock to avoid a50ft turn. Damage will happen if humans are involved, but I can say this fie certain. Every climber or skier I saw going to Muir was on the trail and obeying.
I'm sure most of us will try to be "respectful" in the coming weeks, but there will come a point (hopefully!) when long sections of the rock-lined trails will no longer be visible, even though the snowpack is less than five-feet deep. I was just trying to alert folks that this has been a sore-point in the past.
Note that our passion is so remote and foreign to park 'management' that it only merits a brief, absurd statement on their website. No wonder timel...

There are only two sentences in the Park website section on skiing & snowboarding and this is the first: "To avoid damaging exposed vegetation, a minimum of 5 feet of snow is strongly advised for skiing and snowboarding." I guess we're supposed to posthole or snowshoe until then, since apparently those activites do not damage vegetation.
I think “strongly advis...

Peter and I skied down from Muir at about 3:00 and picked up Mark who was still making his way up the snowfield. We should have waited another hour or so for the clouds to lift and the visibility to improve. The late afternoon light was spectacular!
The snow was...fresh.

Weather was WAY better than might have guessed from the forecast.
I left PL about 12:30 and you could see the snowfield, all in sun. During the hike things started to sock in from the west side, til it reached all too typical 150' or so visibility. Stopped ~4:15 at top Moon Rocks because snow was getting wind-crusty (according to others that condition didn't persist had I gone higher oh well.)

Awesome report; just the news I was hoping for, for the end of this week. Will try for Friday.
Got my first tay out there yesterday, good times
Passenger(s) in the car were also idiots for not bringing (chain)saws.
Snow was deep enough to avoid core shots.

Sweet, so in 2 weeks when I go back it should be totally doable from c2c!

I've always seen that snowfield but would choose to go up high and ski. It is definitely a nice sheltered option on those stormy days.

We all skinned form the car.
Jameson and Jeff skied to the car.
Holly and I took our skis off for a short carry at pebble creek.
Many rocks were skied ::)

Can't tell from the pictures exactly who is who, but I was the young guy in the bright blue jacket and Waybacks, if we met. Good times up there!
Ron ,
knee is coming along. I'm going easy.
Joe ,
I held back from turns in the light cover because of my knee issue but there were tracks down from the Outhouse saddle and in Naches glades .
Scotsman ,
You owe me a cut of your winnings for the clarification!

Nice....Joedabaker owes me a ton of money now as I bet him two weeks ago there would be skiing at Chinook by this Sunday.
Pay up Joe!
Since when has 3-pin skiing ever been considered skiing? :D
I can't remember the terms of our conversation, but I do clearly remember my skepticism.
Nice job Robie!

Thanks for the vid, Bird! Now I can see what I missed out on... won't let the next one sneak by ;)
Well done buddy.

Last year (although more like mid September) that patch was a lot bigger. So much so that it wrapped around the lake and the lake had barely melted out. BUT it was also a pretty messed up ski, mostly featuring vertical stripes of clinkers from avy debris that never seemed to melt down. So it looks like this year it's a shorter but more smooth-riding option?

We put in an excellent XC skiing training session on that patch several weeks ago. Surprisingly good skating and schussing.
There was an inch or two of snow on the trail, but no ice. Still a little slippery in spots on the way back though. If you have yak traks, bring them just in case.
The music and mixing up the speeds gave it a PBS feel! Nice! It really felt like I was there, especially when you took a header - that's where I live, baby!

Good effort getting out there in the middle of the night. That is more motivation than I think I have ever had!
I agree - that takes Tay to the level Cray-Zay. With that attitude, you'll never want for first tracks.
Thanks for the report.
Is there ice on the hiking trail?

I left Paradise at 11:15 AM on Wednesday and started the descent from Muir around 3:15 (guess). I thought I was going to be too late to get the goods but it ending up being perfect conditions/timing (not to rub it in Brian). The ice was very edgeable and you could transition off the firm, new, wind blown snow and back to the ice without hesitation. I could see tracks from earlier in the day that did not penetrate the ice but I was able to break through the first half inch and that made all the d...
May I ask the question everyone is wondering.......Why so early?
In skiing I find the early worm gets frozen or has to break skin tracks all day ;)

Ah, you bought the carbons (TLT Performance), big mistake ;-), the Mountains are more durable :-)

Conditions were better than expected today :)
Trumpets blare and church-bells ring! Better than expected... I gotta get down there!
I was too, I could have made it up the icefield on my crampons, but didn't want to chance buddy getting hurt. Bro's before snow? :) Anyways, gonna head out on my scrapa's on Saturday in some fresh snow (snow level 3k) and get those remaining turns in for oct.
We were waiting for you to ski by us on our way up...

Way to go get it, guys. The WX pattern for the coming days is looking promising...
I have to do Ruth. It is calling.
If I get turns in this Oct. it will be my first complete year in about 15 years. I hope the window in my life opens up :)
Congratulations on your first 12 months.

Wohoo! That snow looks beautiful. Thanks for the post.
It was better than I was expecting. Capped month 12 with a bluebird pow day...definately didn't expect that
It was cool meeting and riding with you guys. I got some video as well. I'll post it after an edit in a couple days
