Well, yes, be sure to park outside the gate.
The walk across the parking lot is a brutal approach...

Sorry, impulse...Seriously, I wasn't trying to hijack into a resort restrictions thread...but be smart, be nice, and know the area's use permit restrictions before you go.
White River Glacier is cool, nice pic. Did you hear running water / outbursts?
Buddy and I saw a foot climber almost glissade into those cracks one time. He hit a ridge on the lip of the first and launched over it . He...

I was feeling bad about posting a BC trip report about poaching closed resort turns, but yesterday hiked up to about 9k near the bergshrund? of White river glacier. Pretty darn suncuppy up there but was neat to see some glacier action up close. Here is short viddy of first decent turns just above Palmer.....above that wasn't very worthy of a camera running. Already planning Oct turns there.

Nice to see you folks up there. We had a great night camping, and I skied everything from Camp Kaiser back on Sunday. It was great to see two of my heroes, Lara, and Greg Lange. You could have done a better job smoothing out the sun cups for me on the hairpin patch ;);)
Boy Mike that looks like a wonderful trip, sounds like the extra effort was worth it. I think you get a gold star for that one.
Fantastic! I will keep whining to a minimum the next time I have to scramble for turns, we sure have plenty of easy options (here in the PNW) compared to your mission, great inspiration, thanks.
- you could also tag somethin' by June Lk (Mt Wood). except it's about 5,000 vert, to reach. viewable from 395
Love it! That's strong work Kam, as usual for this time of year down there...

You're one of us ... a little different.
Too funny! ;D Thumbs up for the twin tip grab guy NW profile #143.
I know of a few who would pull that off as well, but I never thought of the Pemco commercials. Classic!
Today I skinned up to top of Palmer to check out the finger of snow on the right...it does link up to area above fine. Plan on going up to about 9k tomm. Talked to a couple dudes working there when they were parking snow equipment and everyone was super nice. Saw an awesome rock slide off the right hand face from middle of the Palmer - think I got some good pics and a short viddy I might post later. What an awesome day up there on some snow.
Hey Mike. Glad you got out.

Thanks for the report! Might get up there Thur or Fri. BTW--any problems from cat operations etc. with you skinning up Palmer snowfield?
Once again thanks!
Once again thanks!
Awesome thanks man! Feel free to delete my first post if possible so it's not duplicated.

First post but a longtime reader. 9 months down, 3 to go!
Had a sweet day of hiking and skiing / snowboarding on Baker's Ptarmagin Ridge Sunday. Some smokey haze and low fog in the morning, but the bluebird came out in the afternoon. A few other skiers and hikers out but certainly not a crowd.

Seriously not cool about those cowboys pointing the rifles
Two guys had 7 horses enclosed in a white ribbon corral. I think the white ribbon might have been an electric wire! As we hurried by I considered stuff I might do to ham it up for the scope, but I was too chicken. I wish I'd taken a photo of the camp. It seriously looked like...
great report and September dedication.
Seriously not cool about those cowboys pointing the rifles - most likely that's a felony assault charge. Glad everyone stayed safe...

Cool trip!
That's an impressively long hike for a weekend of skiing. My shoulders hurt just thinking about it. Great country though.

Any idea if the mountain has been getting any snow in the last few days?
Right on guys. Like others said, that's dedication. You rock. And man, what a great place to get turns for September!
Awesome Mike! Love the N95 respirator... that's dedication.
Wow! Great photography! That little bit of fresh is very exciting. Thanks for the report
Thanks for the update Bird.
Awesome Vid, snow looked soft enough just a little cuppy. ;)

It does not really do justice to say that Jasons photos are fantastic, thanks for the reminder. The trip looked like a dandy as well. Thanks
Nice pics and report.
The Bellinghamsters are probably shuddering at that sentiment... ;)

Usually don't travel this far north, but after this trip I don't know if I can stay away. Amazing area.

Deb & I were also in attendance last Sunday. We saw you playing on the Sholes while we had lunch on the knob W of CP (also saw the usual goats off to the N of CP, but no bear). A few weeks ago we had sampled the N slopes of CP and this time were back for the S. Although somewhat more constrained from a choose-where-to-go perspective, there is still a continuous ~800 vf to be had if you...
Its nice to know that I'm not the only one who was taken off guard coming down the portals. That steep slope before the crevasses was rather icy when I was there about two weeks ago. Lesson learned.
A few years back, on what sounds like pretty much the same spot, I too got to the point where the roll over began to make me think about pitch, the snow got crusty-scratchy, and I decided to stop and side-step back the way I came...

Amen. The longest and scariest two falls I've witnessed took place on hard snow in mellow terrain in ~November. I can still hear the scream of the second. Late/early season snow has its own different (and quieter) set of...
Bob,One of Fabulous Baker Boys, took this of me and inreturn I took this of him.
We actually did one of the pitches down from the "first" portal to the lower Sholes a couple of weeks ago, but it was dicier than we had expected, steep over a crevasse. To get to the saddle between the two Portals and to the Rainbow, Iluka's way is definitely better.
You are exactly right; it looked like that was the only way to get onto the lower part of the glacier. I only wish we had realized that earlier! Next time.
We ran into that exact same navigation snafu on our trip there at the end of August. It's very inviting to just head out from Camp Kiser and cut over to the saddle between the Sholes and Rainbow Glaciers by staying at the level of Camp Kiser. This time of year, that gets you cut off by crevasses. The best thing to do now is just drop onto the lower Sholes from Camp Kiser and then climb back up to that saddle.
That was quite the day to be up there. It my first day up there and I was utterly impressed. Too bad the clouds came out and blocked the sun from heating up more corn.
Great report. Good looking snow and cool bear pic! There has been a TR drought and this one is refreshing.
Beautiful pictures - and congratulations on the year! It sounds like Baker was a place to be this weekend.
