The bowls directly off the peak were heavily windloaded but the bond seemed good to the bed surface so you could probably ski them now due to the healing effects of warm temps. We went past the normal backcountry area into powder 8 bowl and skied in that area. Anything north facing might still be ok tomorrow morning but i expect after probably 9am everything will be toast if it isnt already.
You're right on all accounts. Continuous snow started pretty much right where the se ridge routE leaves the trail. Lots of big cornices on north facing slopes which were dropping all day, definitely need careful route selection and toming. Was exactly what I wanted.
Nice! Good to see a TR from my neck of the woods for a change. Did you go all the way over and ski in the bowl(s) below Apex Proper? Any good on the ridge between Beaconsfield and Secondary Summit? Hurt my knees at Baldy on April 1 and skied crappy slush covered bumps at Apex on April 7, then discovered my injury and been healing up ever since, waiting to get back out there...!
Thats a big line. Very nice report, photo's, and video. I concur that a tele skier is more likely than any other to forget their poles...
You can still ski to the parking lot, we were there last night. Front side firmed up (crust on mank), while the back side shmoo skied well in the wanning sun. Fun ski laps after work!

Re: Robinson
At what point was there enough snow to ski? I'm assuming continuous snow for skiing would be above the waterfalls on Beauty Creek somewhere but before the standard route leaves the creek valley. It looks like you kept going up Beauty Creek until just below the summit and then climbed up the NE bowl.
It looks like a good approach on skis but I would think the NE bowl would be a pretty risky proposition for avalanches in mid-winter. It looks like it gets a...

That's a great set of pics, ascent, moon, the lot. Good effort all round fellas
At the bottom, scant; this hot spell will wipe out the bottom. But from the base of the face up, it's hanging in there. A few patches, but still good. Here is a vid: http://youtu.be/Gf2gXpaVSM0
How thin is the coverage getting? (Thanks for the information!)

Nice video. What a bonus powder day. Did you hit those rocks or clear them? They looked like they snuck up on you!

Yup, thanks Rog, Dave, and Elliott.
I guess you probably had to re-open, but Ed, Matty, and I put one in Monday evening.
Phenomenal snow that day!
Headed up after work, very gloppy on the lower mountain.
Snow started to change just before the top of one, continued up to Gunmount and the snow seemed pretty dreamy.
No evidence of natural slides anywhere to my surprise, and couldn't get anything to move on steeper slopes. Rode down Davey Jones Locker which had the perfect runout. Lower mountain had a thin wind crust that made things a little difficult.
Don't think any of that dreamy stuff will be aro...

Yeah! Rockin the green zealots, love mine! Props for haulin dem suckers up the hill though. Awesome (April!?) stoke.
Wish i would have known you were there Silas we would have done anothe r lap with ya!
I was surprised that I would see my tracks but they followed my route exactly, going around every tree and rock, complete with my break spots. Was weird, this was o ly for a short section around 6800-7200ft. Saw plenty of other tracks around higher up which I followed.
I thought about following the road to the Corrigan TH but from where I turned off it looked pretty broken and I thought it would be more direct to go straight up until I hit good snow.

what's that line in the bottom left corner of the first pic? does that go?
Keen eye – that one doesn't go from the top but is still probably a 1500' run!
You sure those were your tracks going up the SW ridge? There were people bootpacking that on Saturday. At least 9 folks that I saw climbed the mountain on Saturday the 27th. We went up the road to the Corrigan Lake TH. By avoiding slopes down low that were anywhere near south facing, we skinned continuously from the road to summit. Did the Traverse from Hell across the SW bowl. Skied N. off the summit, traversed over and skied the SW bowl. With the excep...
We did a couple of early laps on the Phantom Slide. Pretty much epic end of April conditions. A get it quick and get out quick type of day. Many visits to the white room were had. Thanks for the skin track.

Next i'll be bringing back long underwear under shorts with gaiters for the summer months ;)
Yeah, for real!! I was up in this area with Scott a few years ago for a trip in May. Packing ultra-light for a two day trip in good weather, I didn't bring a pair of long pants. I ended up with tan lines from hell on my legs above my ski boots. Took at least...
Thanks for the motivation to play hooky Dan, it was a fun day in the mountains with you and Tyler. Here's a few shots of you guys in action.

Dan at the top of our first descent. The summit of Mt. Angeles in the background.

It sounds as if Bailey is better later in the season when the west side road of Diamond Lake is open. More hiking in the woods but that keeps the machines away, and it's corned up more.
Looking forward to your Thielson TR :)

I like the reports from the southern volcanoes.
Snow continuous from Hwy. No sign of any trail, but didn't look for one of course w/the snow.
Snow more consolidated and heavier as expected with the sun last Thursday on Pk 6775 in front of Fisher, but snowshoes still required higher up.

Not ten-thou Mike, didn't even hit seven this year. Too many long breaks in the sunshine I guess.
WOW! Makes me think I need dynafits. Nice job sam, looks beautiful up there

Wow. Those first two couloir pics are amazing. Looks like you have to duck under the leaning rock to squeeze through the steep section.
And it looks really steep.

Nice work Tyreid..
Looks like you found the only skiable cavity on the Dragon Tooth and the other run. Not a lot of options on either picture, either ski the line or go big!
I don't know those areas for squat, must have been interesting exiting both of them once your in the hole.
Good work and nice website too.

I suspect the road was snow free to the Cooper Spur Ski Area. Usually the road to Tilly Jane Campground/Cloud Cap won't be open until late June at the earliest.
author=wolfs link=topic=28405.msg119473#msg119473 date=1367175805]That was us. Nice to meet ya. After we left you we did the SE ridge of Judis; the ridge top has become my favorite mellow Bean Basin tour. We stopped c. 150' verts from Judi summit due to wintery weather, limited viz and cornice issues....
Would be interested to hear from the other party I saw how the snow up toward Judys/Marys was and whether my W aspect was just a wrong call.
When I got home I transferred my GPS track to the computer and HORROR it read 9888 feet!
So back to the Ridge I went, and by headlamp I made one final short lap up Sitkum and Down Chak Chak. Not super satisfying. At least it brightened Sara's evening. I'm not sure she meant me to hear her chuckle.
Interesting how many of us "Mountain Men/Women are so geeked out when it comes to technology and obsessive record keeping. When...

I enjoyed meeting you in person the other day and gleaning from your deep knowledge of the terrain in this area. I hope to get out with you soon on lines such as these. Truly spectacular place to hang out!
Hey Dan, great to meet you as well, that was a fun day! Look forward to more...
Super!!!
Way to make it happens Mike! and on your home turf as well. Love skinning the closed resorts with the pooches.

good trip ! i have only been up there in similar conditions, need to go back up when its not puking !
nice one ! saw your tracks high on hardy from methow col - good way to exit while there is snow on that slope !
Way to embrace the uber-hamster wheel Mike!
Awesome Mike -- I'm ashamed to say that I would probably round up aggressively when processing the GPS data.
Congrats, Mike!
Love the first picture. Something about the way the snow lies around those lava rocks. So perfect and yet so ephemeral. You're lucky to have that in your back yard.

I was just finishing my second lap down two different sw face lines when you were about to cross over the creek (assuming that was you in the orange boots). I had great snow on both runs. A little scratchy at the top due to the wind on the 1st run, but overall very good.
I chased my friends up into Bean basin after seeing you and can say the snow was considerably more cooked on the se lines we skied back.

There is some interesting pathology that went into this type of trip Mike that I am trying to come to terms with! Well done sir! Way to keep the sickness alive!
