How far was your total round trip from the gate?
I believe it was about 13 miles round trip. TOPO indicates that the Marble Mountain route saves about 1-1/2 miles each way.
Thanks for this TR! Were you the guys on Shannon Ridge at 8am-ish? We (the sleepy campers) had gotten up to the notch before the traverse before the glacier around 3am. Nothing had firmed up over night and we figured going for it would have been more slog-tastic suffering than we wanted. (Moonrise and a couple of meteorites were beautiful though, and totally worth being up at that hour.) You've just confirmed that we made the right call. I'm glad you all got up and down safely!
Nicely done. We went from marble mountain snow park on saturday as well and it was too packed. We are headed back up this friday, how far was your total round trip from the gate?
I am considering doing the Monitor ridge route this time if its not toooo much longer.

I think the N. Fork Tieton road (NF-1207) is closed to snowmobiles. How did the chute down to the road look? Sorry about your broken ski.
Good call... may have been our ski tracks you crossed - we traversed over as far as the low point right below the summit before dropping in. Thank you east wind for keeping conditions just right!
Strange. I skied St Helens from Marble Mountain SnoPark on Saturday and it was MOBBED.
The shots came out well Brian. The memories of the approach/deproach glop will soon fade but I have a feeling I am going to hang on to that picture for some time to come.

Sounds great, good photos.
Go to the closed gate and hike.
Get that springtime corn.
I bow to Haiku master. ;)

It felt kinda steep, but not 132° steep.
Is that how they taught you geometry at that two bit engineering school you went to? ::)
Great trip guys and excellent photography Brian.

Sorry you didn't get to summit. I am not all familiar with the access roads as both times I have been it was earlier in the year and all roads snow covered. However, I believe road NF3661 is a more major road to the summer TH and may even get plowed late in the season.
Both times I had to park on the summit snow park, which works but as yu relapsed adds some extra distance. I have heard in mid-winter you can park just off the highway on a line more directly south of the summit g...

Sorry to hear you got stuck in those conditions. BUT...thanks so much for posting this. It's tough to find TRs from folks in this area (I'm also from Eugene). Much appreciated.
Yeah, not much get posted about the local stuff around here, you are often heading into the unknown with regards to road and snow conditions. Jefferson ski info is especially sp...

Same conditions on Hood, winds beat us down all day and made every attempt at grabbing gear requiring a split in the group for a 2 hour ski retrieval (successful, UL touring skis not ideal in high wind…). Made it to 10K much later than planned and called it good it was late enough already. It was a labor of love for ski mountaineering.
As we climbed in the windy onslaught I looked across...
Indeed, that fourth photo is a KEEPER! One for the lifetime achievements folder.
Wow, that's one of the best shots of the year! Great pic
Headed to Timberline for my son's birthday also planning on hitting the Palmer to Flood vert fest. I knew we were in trouble when my son literally was blown over in the parking lot. Got to the lifts just in time for the big shut down. Spent a few hours playing ping pong and eating in the lodge. Lifts never restarted. A long way to drive for a game of ping pong.
Kids and I wanted to get top of Palmer to base of Flood on Saturday. Winds were gusting 60mph in the lot and lifts were closed out at 11am. Mountaineering skill builder class in the overflow lot was having a hard time on low slope ropes.
I have Jeff on my list. Thanks for the report.

Thank you soooo much for the beer! Arriving to the pyramid lake trailhead we saw a note on our car and thought we got a ticket...
and yes, the traverse was grand.
glad you two had a great trip on eldorado!

That line looks awesome! Did the Kautz headwall look skiable/reasonably safe when you were there?

Thanks for the mention! Never thought to document the one day ski traverses from way back in the day.

There you go. It's indisputible. 48° and 3 inches from Camp Schurman.
HA! I love the protractor!
And a gorgeous photo too

ZOMG I didn't know it could be done like that: it's not mandatory to interminably slog to the summit!? I'm confused, bothered and excited all at once.
Yeah.......nice, nice, very nice
I've been waiting for a cool shot like that so we can have a protracted discussion!

My pups did the same thing when they were young. They've learned to stay back after getting some cuts from my edges. If you ski fast enough they tend to lag behind anyway. I think it is good training to make them stay behind you in the skin track so they learn that they need to be staring at your butt instead of trying to bite at the magical sticks you seem to be floating on.

Like any good parent trying to get their young 'uns on the snow...
1) Put them on skis in the front room.
2) Get them on skis in the ski area parking lot.
3) Find a good, affordable ski school.
4) Diligently take them to lessons each week.
5) When they find they can't, or don't want to, ski anymore, leave them home and keep chasing the white roo...
Skinning at West after the craziness at Alpental ended was a beautiful relief in fine 1-2" corn snow conditions.
Nice work guys, looked like you nailed the conditons. Such a fun line eh! Big

How long does it actually take to ski down the Headwall?

Hahaha, thanks for the good chuckle! You old geezers are quite the inspiration for us mid life, geezers in training ;)
Nice report !

I skied "ski acres" on Friday around noon and it was a goo fest, has it consolidated or were you just more of a morning person?
Awesome! I love how it came together. I'm patiently waiting for that day to come ;D

Some Great May Day fun... much better use of energy than the downtown mayhem in Seattle. Any slide activity in the Grouse Creek drainage from last weekend's snow? Looks like great conditions up there.
Awesome Line!!
Nope. Pretty settled out as of friday.
CAHONES!
We were looking up at your line yesterday on our way in and were mightily impressed. Way to get after it!

Cleared the rocks :) and yes the snuck up on me ::)
Masterful editing, I'm still grinning.
Thanks for posting!
I skied Silver Star last June and had a blast despite the 8 hour long ascent. :oP
Thanks, too, for emailing me that awesome 2nd photo!
