tripped up alpental today with a lil guy i've known his whole life.
we followed the cattrack under 6 keeping a good watch uphill, some debris but no activity by noon. light mist and sunbreaks all morning on nice snow.  rollen crux a scramble but goes for another day. l'international was in fine shape but skiers right is developing a moat requiring a mandatory air.
fun times watching q get to the top of 2!

Tusen Takk.
I've been up that way in summer, having friends in Tromso and Narvik. Dream of skiing there. Way to get it.
It was great to see the sunny and warm days during your trip. The long days gave you the time to get to Grey's Peak and the upper slope. I had cold and short days in our February Kokanee Trip. Great photos.  ;)
I too have longed disliked the climbing permit system on msh.  Why does it exist?  I posit some issues, because I'm bored this rainy a.m..

1. Congress has never fully funded outdoor recreation on Forest Service lands; in the past, much of OR was funded collaterally by timber harvests.

2. Congress has passed such a mishmash of laws governing federal agencies such that it is practically impossible for the FS to do management well.

3. Conservative members of Co...
WOW ! Great story and photos. You gave the folks the story about the split guy. I skied there a long time ago before the snowboard was made. My son in law lives in Stratham,NH and skied there last week with boys-14, 11 and 8 years old. He had this 14 year old ski the left and right gulley. This place has great stories for ever.  ;)

About 12 turns down the skiers right slide path near Shot 6, a good piece of snow on the rock slab broke above.  The mountain gods were favoring us today...Hope that helps give a sense of the desirable ski conditions and areas of caution.

A "good" piece of snow?  I call that a BAD piece.  Glad you "lived to ski another day" ...
Ive been opposed to the new permit system and MSHI since day one .
My number one gripe is
Between April 1st and May 15 is prime ski mountaineering time on MT St Helens. With The MSHI system Skiers and climbers are forced to use the online system buying a permit for a particular day. With no option to change that day if inclement weather or avalanche issues occur. What could go wrong with that ?  No quota is effect in that time period so why not make the permits open dated for Apr...

Wow, looks like a great trip in a beautiful area. Scandinavia is cool.
Skiing around the Alpental Valley (Mountain valley valley) has been excellent all week.  This afternoon JD and I got a good Zen slap upside the head though while on a quick and mellow 'rest day' lap at the end of the day in familiar terrain.

About 12 turns down the skiers right slide path near Shot 6, a good piece of snow on the rock slab broke above.  The mountain gods were favoring us today, as we managed to see it just as it was breaking and spraying like whitew...

Awesome pictures Franklin!
Thank You!
Thanks for the pics! Its been years since I was up at Tuckermans. So many ridiculous stories come to mind...
That is HUGE. No surviving that shit. Thanks for the info!!

Did the dog recover?

For sure, he was just hamming it up for the camera.  He had a great time up there and was chasing me on my skis the whole way out.
I got up there close to 6 and there wasn't any rain all the way until...lot1.  Slowly got ready hoping it would pass and hung out on the bridge for a bit, then got antsy and set off just after 6:30. And then the rain stopped about 6:35 leaving a pleasant climb and ski.

I watched you skin in the rain from the comfort of my car - impressed!
When the rain stopped I enjoyed the consolidated corn both up and down lower International.
only about a mile now to the trailhead.  One carry (might be no carry in a day or two).  Pilchuck skied nicely yesterday 5 pm.
Yikes. Was up the White Salmon drainage on 5/1 and there was some serious carnage in there from the previous warm-up... lots of 8-12ft releases at various points along Shuksan arm and some freshly sheared trees to 30" diameter. On the one hand, spring skiing is "safer" in terms of the predictability of skier triggered slides, but it can take a long time for all the slabs to come down, and the naturals go BIG.
Dusk patrol shift. Showers rolled in around 6 and gave me a good soaking for half hour. Paused on Pettigrew Porch to dry out and make go-nogo decision but weather didn't strike again despite threatening clouds to north and west, so that was good.

Ascent via Rollen has a tricky spot now but otherwise fast and straightforward skinning. Some big craters from cat digs in Debbies where they were surfacing utility vaults, you might want to go other runs.

Nash was in really n...
sarcasm n16ht5?  Not like you're keeping them out of your pow this time of year!
On the Mt St Helens Institute web page, it says:

A permit is required to climb above 4,800 feet on Mount St. Helens year-round. Begun in 1987, the permit system helps protect the volcano and its organisms from harm, reduces crowding, and helps inform climbers regarding hazards, Leave No Trace principles, and safety.

As I mentioned before, I don't think t...

The funds MSHI collects from the climbing permit program are used to support our volunteer programs, especially the Mountain Stewards....

I thought volunteers worked for free? How much does it cost to organize the volunteers?

So you think my position would be somehow more valid if I was talking about places where I never went? I don't think you would, and even if you did, there would someone else who would stand up and say I don't have any business spewing my opinion on places that I don't frequent.

Certainly anyone's credibility is improved when they practice wha...

Nice pictures!  It must have been your headlamp we saw heading up Cascadian before 5am as we hit Long's Pass.
Cool, we were wondering who those headlamps were, since the 2 we ran into at the false summit said it wasn't them.

Glad you had a fun trip as well.

John / pinnatifid thank you for bringing some facts to the discussion. The "where does the money go" question is really essential to getting to an understanding one way or another. If no facts are provided people have had too much of government doing things the wrong way and are sure to think the worst. We've certainly seen that in the Paradise-on-Tuesday threads and the park has provided nothing to curb it. That taint extends to any nonprofits under government wing.

Nice pictures!  It must have been your headlamp we saw heading up Cascadian before 5am as we hit Long's Pass. We went to give Ulrich's a try but got discouraged by how completely beat up it was, heavily runneled and lots of debris.  We turned around ~8400ft since it seemed most of what we'd climbed above 7K was more slide slipping than skiing and it didn't look to be improving above us.

Stuart from Long's Pass @5am. Red dots are the line we improvised since th...
Thanks for the update Silas, if the rain holds off I'll be heading up there this afternoon to stretch the legs.
Thanks Vince.  All of us expats whelped on the White Mtns always appreciate reminiscing about the place that started our addiction.  Glad you got to touch it and bring us back your amazing photography.
And views!  Photo by Silas.

It's funny how those most allergic to structure and regulation seem to gravitate to exactly the "wild" places that have the most of both (Paradise, MSH, the Enchantments). Thickness in the crowds alone has removed any sense of wilderness in such places.

Yeah, life would be a lot better if the 600+ people on Mt St Helens all bought sleds.   ;)

I was thinking more of the three people on this thread and the 1.3 million Rainier threads :).

Get a sled and head off to any number of other places in the state with fewer crowds and regulations (though certainly not "none" of either). Paved-road-to-trailhead spots are always going to be a mess.

John,

Appreciate your measured and detailed response, especially clarifying parts of your form 990 that otherwise leave the public in the dark regarding how climb permit service fees are allocated and used. I welcome your lengthy response and if you do not mind have some more questions.  Having raised this issue on numerous occasions on nwhikers, portlandhikers, katu message boards, with friends, and having sent a few emails to MSHI this is the first response I have seen from any...
This place looks so amazing! Way to get after it and with such beautiful weather. This is on my bucket list. Thanks for posting this TR.
Yeah, that "event" off mixup arm seems to be a yearly event. I've never witnessed it, but have seen the aftermath and have avoided going up mixup arm in the Spring for that very reason. Dropping down in to Pelton Basin and climbing straight up to Cache Col seems the safer bet if those slopes are still threatening the traverse. Great shot of the carnage, though!
The fact is, $22 is a lot to play just to climb a mountain.  Especially when it's a wilderness experience where no services are expected or provided.  What is the FS using their $15 cut for?  If it was $10 or less I would consider it, but $22 is rediculous.  How about the snowmobilers who go above 4800'?  I assume they don't have to buy a permit, and their machines likely cause more damage and pollution than skiers or climbers ever could.  The only se...
