Beautiful shot, Jim. I think the false summit wouldn't be a problem; it may be possible to traverse all the way from the true summit. Wouldn't be much fun, though, and the exposure is a bit thought provoking. I still think the corkscrew->south ledges route could work, but the conditions under which it will go are probably more limited.
Nice work, dude! Look like it was fun trip!
That's awesome, nice run!!!
I've had that on my list for several years and been in the basin a couple times but conditions didn't warrant an attempt. It's good to know it goes. It's always looked like a nice run from the notch in the ridge down. Way to go getting it! It sounds a little dicey up high.

Man your posting my fave lines on the Blindfold Tour..There's going to be a crowd out there now.

Major style points for a gratuitous lap on a first descent.
Another rad trip, and report Kyle! You've been getting some epic conditions on Rainier this year
Way to go Scott! I know you've been wanting index for a while
Most excellent! Jeff and I have been talking about that for years. Here's my best shot from Forgotten a couple years ago. Do you think the last bit off the summit can be reasonably skied?

Nice Line!
Countless memories staring at that line on the drive back from stevens pass.
Way to step it up.

You must have been a goat in an earlier life. Keep on truckin'
That's a great read,
...it's also a really intimidating mountain wot you just skiied down. Outrageous. Put that thing back where you found it!

Awesome! I've always thought about it when I've been up in the summer, good job getting it
Beautiful pics, Kyle. Looks like a fantastic trip!
Great TR Kyle -- that Cowlitz line is fantastic, though I've only skied it in corn/mush.
Nice!
Has anyone ever skied the col that runs from due east from Pt 5160 down towards Mud Lake? Looks like it could be pretty awesome with a decent low elevation snowpack.

another nice one mr capone. index-area lines have been on my radar for a long while, good to see someone actually get after it. any recent photos of the N-facing walls, stepped back a little ways (like perhaps from the road)?
haha tabke, good find--"enigma range", i like it.

Sweet man! Way to get something awesome in your backyard. I did that rock climb traverse across the 3 peaks in the summer 7 or 8 years ago, and have always wanted to get back there in snowy conditions. It looks worthwhile!
Sick, sick, sick. Gross even. Seems to be the winter of the Enigma Range, with Big Four, E Ramp of Three Fingers, and Index seeing ski lines.

So glad to hear you got this line, I can imagine how long you have dreamed of it.

Oh, the umbrella ain't no joke! I remember quietly mentioning the use of umbrellas to a certain Cascade hardman who openly admitted to using one. That gave me the courage to step out of the closet of umbrella use. :)
Matt, I really like the Yetis, and Praxis was great to deal with! My only regret was getting them too short...

I love Mt Index and have always thought it would be rad to get up there in the winter. I can't even imagine riding a line down it. Sick. Thanks for posting.
Thanks guys!
I seen the photos of you guys hanging around. Wish you would have had better conditions.
Yes Andy, I've looked at persindex cirque from several vantage points. I think you are right.
a side note.... I 'think' you can access index on skis without any rope work up or down if you take the slope just to the south of where I decended. Same access, skin across serene, but then drop down to mud creek.

Way to get it done guys! well done... though not quite in tune with where you said you where going jake! ;)
But man, that photo IS priceless!!!
right up there with John's photo of Kyle Flick, on.. um, Mt Stuart! Something about that place that brings about the mad and crazed expressions!

Nice! We aborted on the tree arete earlier in the season. Very cool area, I think there's some big stuff that could go down off the ridge between Persis and Index with the right conditions.
Beautiful!
Thanks for both reports. I read the readers digest version, but im putting the long edit on kindle with some other epic plays to read on an upcoming roadtrip.
That area looks great. Would love to get up there sometime.
Funny. Thought the umbrella shot was joke til I seen you both had one.

Great report and beautiful shwacking! Feel better knowing that Jake and I had some shwacking friends up North! Umbrellas are the way to go! Snowking is just incredible, worth extending a stay up there to keep exploring. Here is how we felt last year when we found the abandoned road :)
Randonee/AT.
During the ascent I don't think there would be massive difference but I do like the lateral stability of dynafits.

Hi Tim,
Glad your okay. Just wondering were you on telegear or rondonee?

So if anybody is bored and interested in a read, here is the novel length version. It's been a long time since I've written up a lengthy TR on anything, so it was more to exercise my own meager writing ability than anything else. It's too easy for all the trips to blend in to one another without reflecting (and writing), and I need to remind myself of this. If you want to read, enjoy, otherwise I hope you at least enjoy the pictures above. :)

....and thank gawd we Josh's pocket stereo to blast out some rock'n tunes while we skied and bush wacked our way through Vietnam. :)
Yes, I did miss this crucial gear note. The Alpine Boombox ($9.99 at Fred Meyer) is an invaluable piece of gear that should never be left at home. Forgot the GPS? No worries, keep going. Forgot the stereo? Time to head ba...

How far can you drive up the North Fork road?
We talked to your friends, and watched your progress climbing up , then did forgot to watch until too late. Saw your down track over the cliff band, but missed the actual event. Nice!
yeah man! you had fat conditions on the headwall, that looked really fun. how was skiing the HG exit chute after your experience last spring, I'd expect that was pretty exciting.
We were out there a little later in the afternoon... great day to be out. I was glad that as soon as I saw your skintrack up towards the cliffy parts of Catherine, I also noted a downtrack :)
Ooops, nearly started a nationalist pissing fight online. ... Ha, I am chuckling, funny Victor. Great graphic.
Thanks for all the positive comments. I'm intrigued by the Stuart lake approach vs the mountaineers creek shwachfest. I do love it up in the Enchantments when conditions west are grizzly. Shwack and all!

The Entente Cordiale, signed in 1905 marks the formal end to hostilities, but I still don't see any good use for the French flag, except as a table cloth............

The thing about the exit is..................................I didn't know you could slide down to Stuart Lake & the trail. Doh! Professor of...naught!
But that besides, since a spring trip to the Cirque of the Towers, I've developed a taste for skiing past big rock lines, and belting past the Ice Cliff, which looks really fierce right now was probably one of the highlights of my winter.
It also makes a neat loop, and it's all really fun if you are lobotomized...

I echo Kevin's question...why not ski that nice fall line down to the swamps and Stuart Lake then out? It's a very easy exit with a little added vertical as a bonus. Still, cool tour dudes. I didn't even realize there was snow left up there.
Kevin/John - Simple answer...we forgot the tent at the base of Sherpa glacier :)
