That fox is awesome-yet another reason backcountry skiing is so amazing.
Those fox pictures belong in a coffee table book! Awesome! Thanks for the great report. Several reports in the last couple days at Chinook Pass, and each showing different terrain and a different experience. Pretty amazing access to many ski options.
Saw you climbing up but didn't see you come down. We skinned up to below Crater Rock and laid down lines toward Zig Zag Canyon. Then traversed back to ski down to the lodge.
Great day for October turns.

Nice work, figuring it out and being persistent. I'm down in the LK Tahoe area. Temps.are dropping here.. Hopin' for turns like you got, end of Oct. * *

My gosh, you guys really got the goods! Nice to see those great powder turns, I'm green with envy!
Nice! Thanks for the TR; helps plan for weekend silliness.
Pretty good skiing down here in Bend area (with rock skis just in case). Was wondering about Hood--that place can be awesome (obviously) --Thanks for all the great Hood reports!!!!!!!!!!!
Leave it to you to go to another state when locked out of Paradise! Jealous........

If you (and Fido) stay on the east side of the summit you're not in the park. The bridge over the road is the PCT - dogs, goats, skiers and horses are allowed.
Avoid entering into the park territory with your dog off the PCT itself -- at least within spitting distance of the road -- I made that mistake once -- $75 fine.
Great trip report, nice to meet you guys, we were enthused enough to go try Naches Peak, we made our way about 3/4 of the way up, and hacked our way down. By the time we made our run, the snow was quite warm, and made for tough skiing, but we still had a ton of fun. Hope to see you up Wenatchee way.
What a wonderful day to be out skiing, we were not going to be dissuaded from our task. Not buy a government shutdown, not buy a road being washed out, not buy an un friendly NPS Ranger we were going skiing, and a great day we had. It was great to see so many people out enjoying the snow. It was not great snow by and large, but there were a few good turns to be had, and I'm sure that the people that know the lay of the land up there found some good turns. As for the Ranger...
wow! looks like the limited turns were well worth the lengthy approach. Nicely done.
Nice meeting you two on the summit of Yakima yesterday. Glad you guys enjoyed the day too! Nice TR.

Classy. Did you thank the Greenwater native for being a great ambassador for the sport?
Usually that is my job to harass the help and the clueless, Someone taking my role?

Not the greatest idea to ski with a dog in the park as they are not allowed. I get it - I ski with my pup.
Did I maybe misinterpret and this is not in the park?
As for the poor ranger - he IS just doing his job and should not be treated so poorly.

Also, the approach to Sourdough Pass was melting out fast yesterday so we had to carry over a few times on the way back to the car. Otherwise, decent coverage, especially on the N slopes - got out with only 2 not very deep scratches that may need some P-tex work.

Nice photos and TR.
Went yesterday to Chinook with my buddy Eric and we made it to Sourdough Gap and harvested our turns on several laps of mixed-bag snow, varying from baked mush to semi-packed powder with some pinwheeled snowballs thrown in for good measure. It all got a bit harder on the north-facing slopes as the sun came down while the south-facing slopes were still heavy mank.
Fantastic day in the backcountry, though, especially for beginning of October.

we got a good story about a Greenwater native who gave the Ranger a stinging "you're just being a prick" in response to his "I'm just doing my job".

Nice to meet you guys in the parking lot. What a fun day! I enjoyed your head-over sequence. I had two of those in my first 4 turns. Seemed like if I penetrated very deep, I got grabbed by the crunch deeper layer.
Hey Terry, good to make the connection on TAY now as well ;-)
Thank you for letting me trail along and even though we lost touch for a little while, it was reassuring there were others on the trail, not too far away.
Hope to cross paths again with you, guys, on a decent trip one day.

Hey Pavlas,
Nice to meet you on the way up! Thanks for joining us. I was one of the party with Chris. As we headed towards Pebble Creek, Anthony and I decided to re-track down and go for the patch instead of the snow field. Was getting too crazy and going into open exposure past Pebble wasn't appealing. So... we did the same... struggled getting our boots on and geared for a very short but official run. We made it back to the lot about an hour+ before Chris returned. Hearin...

Nice meeting you, Rusty! It was a fabulous day, so glad we hit it during the great weather window :)
Fresh snow skiing in September! I love it!
This weather, and the forecast, has me twitchy.

Thanks Brian and thanks for the encouragement. I guess you can officially say I'm Hooked!

Nice of you to encourage Jake to his first year. Congrats, and thanks for the stoke.
Great news TR, Brian... it's getting better and better (despite the few rainy days in between).
Congrats to Jake on his 12.
Congrats to Jake on his 12.
But of course, the funny part is that it's snowing at Paradise like crazy and folks are posting pictures with inches (perhaps feet by now) of snow right at the parking lot and looks like they skinned up right from there. So if you end up going tomorrow, it might be a blast if the wind's not too bad.
Hey Bryan, was going to ask you how your enduro race went... was actually thinking of you as I was making my way up on Saturday.
I remember once I rode a night MTB marathon with a buddy of mine, and it rained so hard beforehand the clay soil wrapped around the tires so bad, the wheels wouldn't turn after only a few yards. We had to carry the bike uphill for a mile and were seriously thinking of going back down to the bar, the start of this fun race. The only thing that kept us go...

Good post and thanks for the report. I had similar thoughts while slogging through hell on earth at the Tiger Mountain Enduro on the same day - "if I hadn't already signed up", "but the other guys are toughing it out", "but think of the stories to tell", ... And honestly, it kind of sucked but some day down the road I'll probably be glad I have the memory.

Back at the parking lot and apres beers by 2:15, and home to a happy wife by 5:30 ish. Short day, good day. Thank you.
Great to hear it! Wish I could have gone with you guys. Still aching over missing it.
DCM and I left the parking lot about 10:30 Thursday, hit Pebble Creek at 11:30, and then had silky smooth snow from Pebble Creek on up, yesterday. Very nice! Saw a few familiar faces - Oyvind, Crustos and Cam (not THE Kam ;>)
We had views of the mountain on the drive up, then walked up in the cloud, which started thinning at about the 8000'. At turn around time, it lifted way up for good views and visibility on the ski down. The turns were fabulous, but...

Wow! Ten tayers toting (s)ticks. Beginning to sound alot like Christmas! I hope you saved some fresh tracks for us Sun worshippers...
Thank you for another informative TR, Amar. Wow, I learned a ton.
really appreciate those pics of a bone dry McCall Basin. keep thinking that this is prime habitat for a cabin or two ~ could make a mid-winter high traverse a thing of beauty.. 8)
