That's dedication, Mack. Not sure how you streakers do this stuff.
awsome Jamie! Looks like fun. I bet you didn't have to battle any crowds.
Summit squirrel.
Digging deep for content here. Looking forward to high speed powder skiing.

That will teach you to miss church - backslider.
Nice trip! Cool to see it connectable in late season conditions.

Sounds familiar. It was quite a shocking Sunday. I think our group all has varying levels of PTSD.
Great post! Looking forward to catching some turns with you in the future.
What a treat to drop in here on a summer day and read about a grand ski traverse--appreciate the route, prose, and reflection. That NW cirque of Black Peak certainly is a wild place.
Didn't know that the col between Black and its northern sub-peak (please correct if I've misunderstood or misplaced your crossing) was called "Dead End Pass"; cool name that bespeaks the spicy prospect of dropping into that NW cirque.

Nice to see it's still happening. Gotta plan those September turns
Thanks for the report. It looks pretty darn good!
Way to keep the streak going Andy! ScottK and I skied with you on the 10th year mark. Are you at / near 15 or 16 now?
If you're ever in SW CO, give me a shout... It feels like it could snow here any day!

Rode Magic Mile Sunday. This is my first attempt on this map app. I hiked up about 1.5 miles and gained 2300 verical. I has three ski legs totaling 2.4 miles and 3675 vertical skied. I rode the Magic Mile up then booted for most of the way up on snow and skinned the last 500 vertical as it got steeper.

Nice Hawthorne! Be out next week - thanks for update.
Oh no you have re-become one of them. Nice work! I still require more convincing.
wow, way to get after it late season on daniel, and good to hear people are paying attention to the snowpack, and glaciers. thank you NCGCP, and good on you mike - seems you lay tracks on this mountain several times each year. not too long until fresh snow may start to grace daniels slopes. maybe we'll cross tracks up there sometime. 8)
Kyle, it is a very pretty place, thank you for sharing!
Several of your pictures show rocks poking above the snow surface and remind me of early season eastern slopes skiing, especially around my home area, Mission Ridge, where the chocolate chips can be super hazardous. Thanks for sharing, Kyle. keep it up!
This is just to make note of the outrageous picture by Jason on the first two pages of your article in Alpinist 47. To all others check it out..........wonderful!
The coverage on Zig Zag is actually pretty good for August. There's a decent finger that's close to zig zag canyon. I was kind of curious about the coverage on White River.
Looks like a weekend full of fun. It was nice meeting you on Friday :)
As of 8/20, The Patch abides. However, not like in previous late summers in recent memory...
The drive: 5 hours RT.
The gas: $50.
The hike: 10 minutes.
The runs: 3.
The vert: 350 total.
202 months: PRICELESS!

Yeah, we've come to the conclusion over the years that while an August hike into Spray Pk is about 3 miles, the trip back out is actually 9 miles.
It's the final *uphill* on the exit just before reaching the trailhead that adds an effective six incremental miles!
(Ditto for Middle Sister, ugh.)
Especially bad when you "enjoy" the little descent at...

Fun trip. Looks like a fun group. You seem to have a penchant for drawing a crowd.
The "locals" call that lake "Cat Eye" Lake.
No mention of the "moonlight/night" run down the Flett before retiring. If you missed it you might consider adding it to the agenda for next time. It's a...

Strong effort for not much vert. Any ideas for September?
U can do it, Dan! Only the baddest climb, ski, work AND successfully raise a family ::) 8)

Good outing. September and October this year could be character-building. It's a club everyone wants the other members to stay in!
I like the Adams shadow photo. Good luck for Sept and October. The first TAY is super satisfying.

I trust you saw the "current fire activity" layer. That one's gotten a lot of my attention lately.
...and apologies for the thread drift!
No need to apologize for sharing the most useful mapping tool around!
Ha! Another classic mikerolfs post! Can't wait to join you on another adventure.
Yea... this summer sun has been powerful. I haven't yet reached for my skis this month... mostly been backpacking with the kids and looking for rocky adventures.
Ah Forest! I've been waiting for this... crazy timing... just as you posted this I was away with my family doing the maple pass loop and thinking all about where you may have gone etc. Too bad for us the smoke obscured our far away views.
At the same time, the smoke added an element of mystery and some interesting lighting at times. These mountains are deep and I really think you have a gift in unfolding their mystery.
Looking forward to talking about...

Awesome. That's a great ski. Been a long time since I've skied there. Adventurous to ski there this time of year. Way cool.
Top of Piker's .... look at the size of that runnel! It was at least 3 feet deep!

I still feel the unquenchable yearning from my youth creeping back into my psychy as an adult.
^^^I know many of us can probably identify with this quote --- I certainly can!
Nice write up and report --- looks like a fun little patch for August. One more month and hoping for a white October!
Hey Mack!
The first time I was out there two years ago later in August you could ski further down the Rainbow than I was able this time. It was only about 700 feet or so of descent this year and the bottom part was fairly flat as well. I imagine that by September it might be even less. The Sholes was also starting to show a fair amount of ice even on the lower sections.
Still a pretty place back there!

Andy, do you think the Rainbow will be big/soft enough to be worth the hike in early September?

Wow, thanks for taking the time, wonderful . You are so right it sure can be hard to remember it's the journey when your scared stiff on some slippery rock in ski boots, or over your head in devils club but it's true. I have Alpinist 47 in my travel bag and I'm with Charlie, it's a great article.

I really enjoyed the introspective and philosophical musings in your TR. Looks like a great trip. Thanks.
If you enjoyed those, have a gander at this month's Alpinist for Forest's excellent Pickets feature.
You're welcome!

That's some first-rate farming, if you take my meaning. ;)
Two minor things:
- Our 1987 trip ended at Sibley Creek (west of Hidden Lake Peak) instead of Eldorado Creek.
- We really had just one deep valley excursion, into Thunder Creek. It looks like you were able to traverse high from the Thunder Glacier toward Park Creek Pass. We didn't like the look of that section, so we dropped down. The direction of...
