After seeing this I am intrigued about this trip. How far is the hike to the glacier?
Mike is my hero this time as well! What a great and bold choice at this time of year! I still remember his cumnavigation of Mount Stuart, however...  :'(
Excited to be heading back in March & April. Feel free to PM if interested in joining. They're opening another couple resorts with French and Austrian aid and always more to explore on the touring front.

121 months for me.

At the youthful age of 41?  You a badass!
Mike, you really are my hero.

Loved hearing your shouts again... It's time!
I was also up there Saturday and was surprised how many people were out trudging up the hill to slide on snow. It must have been the awesome weather because it certainly wasn't the snow quality or quantity that drew people out. Saw about 6 or 7 skiers and as many or more on snowboards.

I also brought the mt bike along and got a ride down the Timberline to Town and Pioneer Bridal Trails.

121 months for me.
FWIW I skied Palmer lift-served when Timberline was open the first weekend in Oct.  The surface wasn't bad at all, a few inches of new rolled on top of of somewhat dirty glacier.  While the groomed conditions were excellent, by the end of the weekend you really had to pick your lines carefully, are you would pumice-grind your bases on old snow.

Much scarier-looking 2 weeks later, although the Palmer proper looks like it still has some white-covered strips on it.
I think you mis-typed the post header, it should read 'another set of shit-kicking photos', please excuse my French.
Very fine.

It's always great to see that Kenji has a new TR posted. Love the photography, Kenji!
Was there a little later. Right around 3PM a scraper cloud came through and very suddenly whited out the upper snowfield. Really spooky how fast that can happen when the winds are commuting the surrounding clouds in not easy to anticipate directions, and what looks like a high layer suddenly merges with mists forming out of nothing from below. Amar had the right timing; saw him descending just before that cloud showed up. Kept going and hoped for viz again, which did happen 20 min. later. I ende...

yes I can confirm the upper limit of video files is the FAT32 max size of 4gb. For a video of the type Mike posted up a good work around would be a timelapse sticking a bunch of still frames together. Depending on camera type and available addons, this can require an additional wired controller (intervalometer) - but some cameras you can now do it with software hacks for no extra weight:) Only reason I still lug a Canon around.....
Thanks, Mike. Perhaps I can tag along on one of your jaunts this winter? The Twins, maybe? Your ventures are pretty focused...
Skiing 20 minutes from the car on last year's snow is amazing.  The trick of a true long time local.  Good work and congratulations on 17 years.  Wow!

Lowell my point and shoot (Casio Exilim ZR1000) will record about 35 minutes of video on the FHD setting which is pretty decent resolution.  I don't know if the limit is based on file size or a camera setting, but the battery will still read full after doing this a couple times.

After thinking about it a little more, I'm pretty sure the limit is due...

The card I use is 32GB.  I don't ever run out of space.  The biggest file size from this trip was 1.74 GB and it was 16 minutes long.  I use a pocket size bendy tripod for stuff like this.

Yeah, that sounds about right.

I just looked at some of my recent videos (not skiing) and they run about 1GB for 8 minutes of video. I carry two 32GB cards w...

Curious how you took the videos.

Did you start the camera and depend on having a big enough memory card, or do you have some sort of remote control?

The conditions looked surprisingly good.

Thanks!
Nice post..YOU REALLY HIT MONEY!
Cool trip to share with those from other countries.
Rad, thanks for the pics & share!
Great name for a glacier.  Makes sense.
Nice going Mike, good snow, great pictures, and all I got for staying home was a flat ass!
Just a slight bit jealous...and got more so after watching the video!  Looks like you timed it perfectly!
You definitely deserved those turns ;)

How far up did you have to go until you hit snow?

My GPS read 6,200 feet when I hit snow that was continuous.
The dirty bumps are a great way to keep in skiing shape during the off season!

In all seriousness, it was a beautiful day and the turns were "excellent". Where else can you ski 3000+ vertical feet in early October with just 3 hours of hiking?

Looks like with this week's new snow we'll be returning to more typical Muir snowfield windboard conditions shortly.  ;D

If it were not for the 4 hour drive from Bellingham, I would be enjoying those late fall conditions that are calling my name! That photo says, I'm missing out on some epic difficult snow conditions.
I often eat lunch at the Baglery and find it based on the real deal.  As for pizza, well having grown up climbing at the Gunks, I miss Chez Joey's and there is nothing like that west of the Wallkill!
Thanks all for the good words! - praying for a healthy snow winter!...and let me know if you find any good pizza, also I'm challenged to find good Bagels, although the Bagelry in Bellingham is pretty darn good.
C'mon, Weasle -- it's been two days.  Whatcha up to?

We who live vicariously need our fix!
Sounds like a NYS encounter group!

Yo, how's da skiin?  Not bad, gonna git me some Matt's and relax...
Speaking of crevasses opening up, pop over the ridge to the Paradise Glacier at about 7,400 ft. and check out the huge cracks that have opened up. I skinned right over those things for years not even realizing they were there (or how deep the snow/ice was just a stone's throw from the ridgeline).
A pivotal day in the mountains.  Bumping into Amar Andalkar on the volcanoes of the west coast...almost a rite of passage for a PNW skier.

I enjoyed your post.  There is something about being brought up back east (my cow pasture was in Vermont and didn't have a rope tow) that you have a deep appreciation for the bounty of the PNW skiing.

Look forward to reading about your 10th anniversary.
Nice read and I too from upstate....... West point/ Bear Mt / Hunter and all the hills one could hike and ski (Storm King)..............still looking for Pizza after 32 years of skiing NW POW.
author=unclebo link=topic=32362.msg135701#msg135701 date=1412874816]My early skiing days were literally up-and-down a rope-towed cow pasture in upstate New York before I reached a young age where ice hockey became my muse and I worked my way up the playing ranks…never spending time at our local ski mountain Greek Peak as my buddies did.  Later in life I skied in Albany under night lights, mildly interesting.

A reference to my hometown ski area of...
Very nice to read that. After all, this is Paradise and we should know what we've got before it's gone! We do live in a great place. There are very few places where you can go to an ocean or sound beach, fish for salmon in fresh or salt water, hike or climb on granite, basalt, or crap, ski on lifts or trails every month of the year, raft or Kayak big or small rivers....I love it all, and it's a lot of fun to have this site available to watch what others are doing and to share with...
Nice post - enjoyable read.
Quite the crowd for the middle of Patagonia!
Posting as requested....
I really enjoyed how you checked your watch mid speed descent!  Fun stuff.
nice work… Looks bone dry!  Time for snow.
Wow Ty.

I'd love to tag along some day  ;D
If you're that "Jones'd" for skiing, I suggest the "Cashmere Bootpack" as an alternative. Obstacle free, should consider "Wenatchee Crampons" if frosted, and could make for a very fast descent with a single misstep! No skis required and unlimited vertical with "runs" up to 1,500' plus!
