Speaking of crevasses opening up, pop over the ridge to the Paradise Glacier at about 7,400 ft. and check out the huge cracks that have opened up. I skinned right over those things for years not even realizing they were there (or how deep the snow/ice was just a stone's throw from the ridgeline).
A pivotal day in the mountains. Bumping into Amar Andalkar on the volcanoes of the west coast...almost a rite of passage for a PNW skier.
I enjoyed your post. There is something about being brought up back east (my cow pasture was in Vermont and didn't have a rope tow) that you have a deep appreciation for the bounty of the PNW skiing.
Look forward to reading about your 10th anniversary.

author=unclebo link=topic=32362.msg135701#msg135701 date=1412874816]My early skiing days were literally up-and-down a rope-towed cow pasture in upstate New York before I reached a young age where ice hockey became my muse and I worked my way up the playing ranks…never spending time at our local ski mountain Greek Peak as my buddies did. Later in life I skied in Albany under night lights, mildly interesting.

Very nice to read that. After all, this is Paradise and we should know what we've got before it's gone! We do live in a great place. There are very few places where you can go to an ocean or sound beach, fish for salmon in fresh or salt water, hike or climb on granite, basalt, or crap, ski on lifts or trails every month of the year, raft or Kayak big or small rivers....I love it all, and it's a lot of fun to have this site available to watch what others are doing and to share with...
Nice post - enjoyable read.
Quite the crowd for the middle of Patagonia!
I really enjoyed how you checked your watch mid speed descent! Fun stuff.
nice work… Looks bone dry! Time for snow.
Wow Ty.
I'd love to tag along some day ;D

If you're that "Jones'd" for skiing, I suggest the "Cashmere Bootpack" as an alternative. Obstacle free, should consider "Wenatchee Crampons" if frosted, and could make for a very fast descent with a single misstep! No skis required and unlimited vertical with "runs" up to 1,500' plus!
It was great to enjoy your TR and photos. Jill and I did a trip in late October 2005. We were lucky to have a big snow year. We skied Antuco, Lonquimay, Chillan, LLaima and Villarrica. We had a car rental which gave us the ability to ski, mainly on nice days.
Being old folks now, we enjoy reading about your adventures in Chile. Your next trip to Argentina ? Plus it is cheaper .... great food. ;)

Incredible lower shot there. Any more photos of the area?
Thanks Chris, Mack, et al for a fun day out in awesome weather on the 7th OcTAYberfest. Just enough clouds to add ambiance and keep it cool.
I had the last of the salmon corn chowder for lunch today.

A great day in the mountains! So glad we were able to get a good group together for the day. Mack, don't forget about the number one back country dog! She was there too, making it 7 of us total.
Thank you to James and family for hosting and feeding us yet again!
Some great photos of the day.

For sure I thought of Andreas, what a line to ski!

You turned around before the Whillans Ramp?! ;)
Wow that's brave. The Heliotrope Super G does not look like a forgiving course ;)
Great photo. Jill and I stopped a long way before your climb and did not carry the skis. :)
Awesome. Still living in your tent, or did you meet people?
Just got an email asking me to upload the view. Here 'tis!

Excellent.
tangentially.... I also I wonder if it's possible to exact an analysis of the coming season?
I am no expert but I fear it's going to be repeat of last season, at least from the outset (late fall - early winter). According to Clif Mass' blog, elements that made for a relatively dry early season last year continue to be i...
Skied a sunset lap from Anvil to Pebble via the Paradise Gl. on Friday 10/3. Still fun skiing on the smooth cornyish old/new. With heavy hearts we shared a toast with the ravens for our lost brothers and sisters.
Excellent.

Nice work gents. I believe I met you up there last year, Jake. Amar and I ventured out yesterday and saw your tracks and thought it looked like whiteout navigation. I think Amar will be writing something up.
Timberline's web cam in the parking lot shows a dusting of snow over towards Meadows:

And here's a picture of something completely white, not sure what:

Photographic evidence would suggest: It's On!!!

Yep, lower Palmer, and might look nice, but was shin deep mashers.
Here's a pic of Mile Canyon.

Yikes!
Hopefully they will cut lanes by Friday, which should "scrape" off the dust (hope hope).
Here's Mother N. doing her part, 32 degrees at the top of the Mile this morning:

Hawthorne--that snow strip coming down Mile looks pretty good--oops, that's lower Palmer?

Here's a few pics of the snowfield and looking up the canyon from Silcox.
There's a fair amount of dust mixed into the upper layer. Not really enough snow to "scrape" it off. I think they're trying to till it in.
Couple clean areas that I assume were new snow, but nothing real impressive or soft.

I think lane reservations have more to do with opening than weather. That is a good sign on their web-page.
Here's an indication that went up in early Sept--generally they don't overpromise to the coaches:

I called the front desk today (couldn't get the ski desk) and she read from an info sheet that confirmed it--Friday through Monday, lifts open to the public.
FWIW, I stupidly bought the midweek only pass so I could save a buck, and now I'm locked out of half the days, or else skinning. I m...

Timberline is scheduled to reopen the lifts this Friday, Oct 3, on a Fri-Mon schedule until full snowfall.
Do you have any "insider" info from Timberline? I'm planning to get a season pass anyways so I wonder if I should try to beg off of work for Friday. Last fall they opened Palmer October 11th which was the 2nd Friday of October and t...
thanks for the beta...I just moved to Bend from Edmonds and am staking out doing the Palmer on Saturday, October 18th hoping there is some new snow by then. Fingers crossed!

Timberline is scheduled to reopen the lifts this Friday, Oct 3, on a Fri-Mon schedule until full snowfall. Very common for oct skiing to require a short lateral hike from the snowfield to Palmer mid station.
Was the dust scraped off of Palmer snowfield? Any new snow?
Good info on the hiking vs skinning, I would've given the snow trench a try also, now if I go I'll just hike up to Palmer.

amazing how some of the most beautiful things in nature are also the most deadly ;D
Dan: yes spooky but beautiful too.

High-5 David, sounds like just what I'm after. Thanks much.
R1de,
I was there just barely over a week ago and it was still there and worth it if your looking for some quick turns, nice scenery along with a short hike. It's always there and is probably at it's smallest right now. I go every August/September looking for some solitude and some turns. The approach is really easy...hike up the pinnacle peak trail, hook left at the pass and drop in between pinnacle peak and castle peak. Most likely you'll be th...

Great report, what a killer way to get September. I think I'm going to have to rip off this idea and pay my own first-ever visit to Pinnacle Glacier soon. Thanks for posting!
Hi guys, I'm just wondering if anybody has an update on the conditions for this little patch. If it's a true "glacier", then it should be existent year-yound, b...
Thursday, September 18, did not hold such glorious weather as shown in the pix posted in the early month! Started from Timberline with a quickly lowering ceiling combined with Estacada Fire smoke, and quickly was enveloped by strato-cirrus. Got on the snow just above where the sno-cats are in the background, but 'snow' is a misnomer. So much volcan dust covered it that it was frozen mud! Managed to find the top of the slough shown, at about 7550 or so. Had to avoid sno-cats, sno machin...
Doubting Thomas,
When the pass opens over Snowy Range Pass in the spring, the skiing off Medicine Bow Peak cirque is awesome. Hike to steeps keep you tingly all day...then a drive down into Saratoga and a soak in the hot springs - well, almost Eastern Sierra-like.
A great out of the way spring destination.
But September? Good show.

Crystal lake drainage is out for a while unless you approach from Cle Elum. I just got a voicemail from the guy responsible for the Hansel Creek Fire closure. He said he had a crew in there the other day trying to do cleanup, and they had to leave due to falling rocks. I've been know to disregard some types of closures, but when a wildfire crew is afraid to hang out under an active rockfall slope - I think I'll stay away as well. No fishing on Ingalls for me this year for the first tim...
