Very good time!  Dan and I are working on a full account of the action. Until then, here is a short trailer to tide you over 8)
      Preview .... Sourdough Rock Festival
Sky, I would have to concur with your payoff vs. effort assessment.  My feet might not agree, but luckily they have no say in the matter.
Now hopefully Kam will chime in with some photos :-)
Yeah snoslut,
I'd love to see that move.  I really wanted to join you at Shasta, but my wife had the weekend off and we ended up at Tioga Pass.  Some day I'll meet up with you at Adams or Rainer.
That's funny, because I had written phil about doing this. Little did I know that you and phil were already there.  8)
After we did three of the chutes it was either the Freemont glacier or Burroughs. Since we could see two long runs in the distance, Burroughs was it. Made all the way to 7800' point just below main Third Burroughs summit. Low viz but best snow of day there as crust held. Standard SE run off Second nice. The steep east wall coming off First got the adrenalin pumping. A natural kicker/cornice exists for the young and invulnerable. If heading up this weekend, the trudge to Third may be still worth...
Just now getting around to getting up some pics from this last weekend's ROCKFest...
What with me trying to get used to a new camera, the pictures are not much to write home about but, nonetheless, seem sufficient to give those that couldn't attend a bit more visual info on the conditions.

After leaving early on Saturday (we missed you, MadDog, especially at the barbie that you graciously loaned us ;) looks like the camping trip was furitful, tho... we could us one of those fish on the...
Even windier on Sunday.  Hmmm...kite board up north side and launch off summit booter.  Hey switch backside 1080 half cab. ;D
2:45 is flying. You deserve a cheeseburger and a beer!  I've done it in 3 hrs but I feel like crap, so I intentionally slow it up to 3:30 about.  I hit Muir Sunday 6-12 & agree the upper snow was grrrrreat! You picked a good day as I had a cloud layer at about 8500'; white out below that point. I wanted to do the main Nisqually chute, but I was solo & figured I better follow the wans on down the 'muir highway'.  Morning of 6-12 there was a couple inches of new at the parki...
Nice job snoslut. We were on the top of Shastina on 6/11 and can relate to the high-winds. You picked a good time for your trip, the next day, Sunday, was even windier.
2:45 is fast...  Thanks for the descriptive info. on the boot-packing requirements.

Scotsman, I may be heading to Muir this Sunday morning weather and time permitting.

I'll be away from the email until Saturday night.  Send me a PM or email if you think there's a possiblilty of meeting up at Paradise.  Hoping to leave the Paradise lot by 8:30am, monitoring radio channel 1-23.
Muir in 2Hrs 45 mins!, you where fassssssst! My best time is 3hrs 45 mins but I 'm an old fart. Thanks for the report. I might just slog up there this weekend.
Jason, hope you guys get back up there.  Definitely check out the NE Couloir if you go. I think it is a better line than the NF.
I've got friends coming from out of town so I'm pretty much out for this weekend.
Hopefully you guys get a weather break.
That video is absolutely fantastic.  The top looks sweet, the jump-turning really athletic, and the scary part totally out of my universe.  Great music too!
though i was bummed to miss saturday, i was glad to get out for a "mini" chute fest on sunday  :D.  ron j and jw, it was good to run into you in the parking lot, thanks for warming up the slopes for us!  cass and kam--3 cheers for the crack a'noon club! ;D
You guys passed up on the NF and/or the NE couloir?
;D ??? ;D

Maybe this weekend? We might find a break in the weather again. I'd say go up the south, down the north, around the east shoulder and out the other trail. You game. :)

You guys passed up on the NF and/or the NE couloir?
;D ??? ;D
I have just added, to the link, my pictures from a slightly better weather day last year when I actually made it to the peak of Winchester. Several of the shots are of Goat Mountain which Markharf and I had climbed through the gulley to the top in May,2004. The pictures also give a good perspective of the snowfields that need to be crossed on Winchester.

Enjoy,
Bob
Sorry, Darci, I'll fix that! At least I got the first two letters right, better than my turns in that little cleft in the rock!
Hey Guys-

I'm enjoying all the pictures from Saturday and the website in general.  Very cool! I just wanted to let you know that my name is Darci not Dana. Especially, since I hope to go skiing with you all again sometime.  I hope you all are getting a chance to enjoy the sun.

Yreka has been a capital of Revenue Enhancement for as long as I can remember doing the Wa-cali haul. Watch it in town too if you stop there for gas, the local counties somehow feel they need to get some of that R.E. action too and patrol the main drag ruthlessly.
Nice pics. Your tales of water bottle bombardment remind me again why sometimes (not all the time tho) there's something to be said for starting a little later in the day, when such projectiles stop harmlessly and it's not such a ch...
Yup right at the border to Yreka they were in full force.  Apparently there is a hq's there.  This whole time I thought it was Krispy Creme convention.
Thanks for the report, snoslut - where exactly was this speed trap, right at the border? My Audi likes to roll, too.
. . . I'm missing the Sourdough Chute fest . . .

We missed your hot hand at the grill too, Mad_Dog, but Chris filled in just fine!

A few more pictures here:

I was worried about the weather and the snow coverage - and both turned out more than fine.  Sunday was another example of my motto for this sometimes challenging ski season "That was a lot more fun than I was expecting!"  Joe - I did ski that one skinny chute, but I can't say that it was very smooth.
, though the snow seemed a bit "grabbier" than yesterday.

Chris-I also noticed that the rocks were a little "grabbier" Sunday.

What a great weekend! It certainly was fun to hook up and ski with the several poster children of TAY. By the way- great pictures Kam and GregL! Good to ski with you! I'm glad you came along for the ridge tour. Like a bunch of Prospectors looking for white gold along the ridgeline.

There...
Regine & I headed up to Muir snowfields.  It was snowing etc when we left Paradise and I forgot to put sunscreen on; I will lose face in a big way.  Not that we saw much sun. About 3 minutes of sucker hole at 8,000 ft convinced us to skin up more; hole immediately closed.  Visibility at 50 ft or so. At 8,500 we started down and with a little ski removal and walking we skied to Alta Vista.  Snow on Pan pt & above about 4-5 inches of new on top of corn; between the base...
Wow, great photos guys.  It was really fun to meet and hangout with everyone in such a great place.
I really missed out by not hitting Sourdough after the grill fest.
Gee, thanks Justin and others...!
My goal was to make it no longer than 5 minutes (edit edit edit!), but somehow it ended up being an epic 9 minute saga.  Oh well, haha...

fyi, the forest floor around Leroy Basin is suprisingly non-rocky  ;)
Thanks for sharing all your Sourdough Chute photo's they're great ;D.  I'm back from my sabbatical  ;), and while I was away I was thinking woe is me, I'm missing the Sourdough Chute fest,  >:( but then suddenly it was WHOA is me  ;D!  We also had mountains, mountain lake...
holy fk'n-A, that was a work of art.  Horrific and hilarious from start to finish!

How about putting that on TTips Television?
That's an instant classic, guys.
Definitely a fun day out!  I'm going back for round 2 today (which reminds me, I guess I should get going to make make that "alpine start" (12:00 noon) :D

edited to update for Sunday:

flash forward to Sunday evening:
Another fun day at the chutes:  Kam, Allyson, and I arrived at the crack of noon, just in time visit with JW & Ron as they returned to the parking lot after their morning of turns on Sourdough Ridge.
We skied 2 more lines off the...
That looks like it's so bad it's almost good. Hilarious video, though. What you guys willingly put your new skis through makes my new skis cringe in horror.  ;)

It's not a turn place, man!

ROFL
Phil, thanks for never inviting me on one of your adventures.  Yikes! ;)

We tracked up pretty much every spot that looked decent except for the bowl west of Antler, and Dan, Chris and Jessica were taking care of that as we walked down to Sunrise!

The A group (with reference to gregL's B group) BBQ was packed with beef. When the grills were packed up, some packed it in. After some lengthy banter, weather watching, and false promises w...
This cracks me up. Here is a film by Phil and Josh, edited by Phil. You guys should appreciate the comedy.

Sorry, Ron, after the fun on Dege Peak, while you guys were back at the bend in the road grillin' and sudsn', Joedabaker and his usual posse took a bunch of us for a tour of Sourdough Ridge. We tracked up pretty much every spot that looked decent except for the bowl west of Antler, and Dan, Chris and Jessica were taking care of that as we walked down to Sunrise!

Great fun and cool to meet some more of the TAY regulars!

Thanks for the great pics Kam!  I've always wanted to ski those lines, and sorry I couldn't make it today.
wow, what fun day. the weather more or less held.  here's a sample photo of Skip.  we shoveled enough snow to fill the chute for him to ski it ;).

fotos:
 1.  Dege Peak seen from Sunrise Point (hair-pin), and in red are some of the lines we skied
 2.
Matt:  i'm glad they found your car, and it's not damaged.  :)
Well, the police just found the car in the University district.  As far as I can tell, it is completely undamaged and the only thing missing from inside is about $5 in change.  All my 10 year old tapes are still there, plus the garden tools.   :)  Anyway, hope there is still some snow left for everyone up at Sunrise this weekend.  Make some turns for me (can't make it this weekend).
Well done!!

You guys make me feel like I've retired from skiing, and been working fulltime >:(  Isn't it supposed be the other way around ???
F-ing amazing. Good work. Ever since the Frying Pan trip I have been figuring out how you guys can make your legs move that fast for more than one or two strides, let alone for a whole day as you keep doing.
I think you two are some of the few who actually do run out of mountain (hence the laps).  ;D
wow.

Double WOW!
Great job- that is a whopper of a day! You got the whole package!
Joe
Way to rack up the vert, Paul & Monika - you're animals!
Wow - Paul and Monika - you guys rock.
Paul,

As you left Horse Camp and traversed onto Casaval Ridge, you were probably above Giddy which would have been on your left(climbers left).  West Face terminates in Hidden Valley which is further climbers left.

I was pleased to read about your excellent trip with Monika.  10,000 vf - :).   I'm not allowed to climb that much vertical unless assisted by a high speed quad.

Zap

Thanks Paul for the great photos from the trip.  That west face is an incredible ski.  Never yo-yo'd around 12000 before--I'm lucky I had you to get it twice with!

paul and monika--you guys are awesome!!  looks like you had a fantastic trip.  great photos too paul. :) way to fill up the weekend!

thanks Allyson, missed you there! :D
