I don't know if it was that high, well maybe 8K, we hit the same traverse line that I hit last year with a gaggle to TAY folks (we knew KAM in common, but he gets around, I hear).  We skied the full chute to around 8K (I guess), then traversed the left side of the moraine to make the corner at about 7300.  There was less snow than last year in mid June, but I think it was still a better option than the RTM.

The Snow Troll

Sounds like maybe you cut back skiers left about 8 or 9,000, is that right?
Wow - another great ski adventure repoted on TAY done in the past 5 days!

We've been wondering when the first Adams northside TR would popup here this season. Kudos to you and your "counterpart" for getting it.
Yeah, but where's the serac shot?? ;D
Thanks Allyson and Jeff. Too much snow, not enough snow! Wait, never too much snow!
A group of 4 of us from Seattle also headed down to Mt Shasta this weekend!  We departed the city at 4am Saturday morning and made it to camp ~1000ft below Lake Helen by Saturday evening....just in time to watch the lightening storm south of Shasta as we were having dinner.

We set out for the summit ~5am Sunday morning.   Unfortunately, our summit attempt was thwarted by gusty winds w/ice balls and white-out conditions.  We turned around ~12,300 ft and headed back d...
Sounds like I should have gone >:(  I was tied up with home improvements. Ally--sone !!!!! You look so hot on those Rando boards!!!! bout time you came to your senses  8)   Great tr thanks!   ...Jerry
wow Lowell, that is a nice photo of John!  thanks for sharing, and a great TR, as usual.
Thanks to all those on the trip for the fun weekend!! Glad we found some great skiing on the south slopes of Shasta!  That sunset lighting on Sunday was worth staying out in the cold for a second night  ;D

Trip photos are posted here
Jeff, You're right the area is ideal for days of touring in the right conditions.  A few years ago a group of us did the Three Sisters traverse with a group starting at each end and doing a key exchange at Green Lake.

Jill and I are heading north and hope to ski in the Sisters area if the upcomig weather system improves.

My wife's adage of "my husband's best trip" is the one I don't die on. As long as I call as soon as I can, life stay OK.

Don't know if we've met, OldHouseMan? Sometime soon, a trip, perhaps? Lara P, Silas and I have someth9ing up our sleeve for this Saturday, June 4. Interested?
Did you use a digital camera Lowell?

Yup, I finally bought a digital camera. I'm still getting used to it and I haven't decided how much I'll continue to use my film camera. The top photo is a slide taken in 1985 from the summit of Gunsight. I scanned it and converted it to B&W.
That sounds great, Dave. I gotta bring Tom up there sometime.
Calling all cars...
What a great weekend! Great TR Allyson; all it is missing is one of your gut-splitting cheers. Thanks for the turns, the laughter, and the great photo opportunities.

While you all went to town and a late night drive back, Kevin, Chris, and I lingered for the alpine glow and a good night's sleep. The fog seemed gone for good by 5 pm. We dinned under bluebird skies. Armed with cameras we watched the sinking sun exaggerate our beautiful lines from the earlier afternoo...
Jeff, I was "gripped" also. :)

Powderjunkie, We skied SKi Heil a couple of times and also Bumpass Hell on Sunday.  You're right the conditions were enjoyable on the lower peaks.  Heading for Shasta.

Very nice! Sweet photo... serious stokage.
That north face of Sinister just looks primo!  Glad it wasn't too sloppy for you.

Did you use a digital camera Lowell?
Sweet!  :D Glad you were able to get up and down Sinister before the storms arrived.  Thanks for the trip report and great photo of John.
Just an addition, it's a 3000' hike to Heliotrope Ridge and another 4500' skin to the summit.  It is possible to skin 1000' of the 3000' hike if you follow the trail to the final river crossing before you hit the Coleman Glacier overlook.  However, I'm not sure how long that snow will last. This is the 1000' stretch we skied back from camp (a life saver on the knees!).

what a small world! we talked to you guys at spider meadows...we wanted to ski maude but chickened out when we saw how high up the snow started...
allyson,

good report and great to see you on suitable backcountry gear.  I find that most satisfying.

Looking forward to hearing more about it...

It's about two hours to the top of the Hogsback, from where you can skin to the saddle (3.5 hours) and then boot to the top (1.5 hours).
Oops!  I guess I'm not very good at estimating kids' ages.  :D
Anyway, nice meeting you!
How long was the walk before you could start skiing?
Greg
Excellent report Allyson!

Was there any buzz down there on other trailheads opening like (Brewer creek )?

Hey Robie, you can check the USFS Mt Shasta Climbers Report here:
http://www.shastaavalanche.org/reports.htm

It was last updated on the 26th and stated the road to Brewer Creek is 8-10 miles out. You don't need the road to be open all the way to ski the Hotlum/Wintun, but you probably want it within a few miles.

Edit...
Allyson,

great report, and I'm bummed I missed out on the great corn and what I'm sure was a fun little drive down.  Don't tell me you've already turned to the dark side?

Great shots, Kam.  I love that new lens!

hi robie--
i'm not sure about other trailheads in that area, although i can tell you that the road was only open up to bunny flats (6950').  we did not ask the ranger about any other areas besides the basic route up avy gulch.  if it helps any though, the snow level descended below bunny flats by about 500 feet or so...
So now I can tell my kids exactly where the guy with the matching shirt & skis went.  You were only one of two skiers we saw all three days.

Yes they had a blast.  I'll see if I can post separately on our weekend.  BTW, they're 11 and 14 (!), we just don't grow 'em too big.  And their packs are about 15 and 20 lbs respectively.  They both got to try out mom's AT gear which they liked a whole lot better than their skinny x-c stuff (imagine that?), but until it...
Nice pics Monika.  Glad you had a good trip with Monika and your friends -- I like the ski caddy idea!  Not much snow left in the Wa Pass area and we just did some hiking.  Heard a report that Harts Pass had some 300 ft runs from Slate Peak.
Zap,

My wife and I were there on Saturday, too.  After seeing your picture on previous threads, I know I saw you and your camper but I just didn't realize it then.

You must have descended before us.  We opted for the west face after seeing the conditions on the SE face.  It felt like the west face of Shasta, only a third as long.  :)

Sunday we returned to a frozen snow pack and much more stable conditions.  We did three laps on Eagle Peak. &nb...
having been inspired by Robie's trip report, Brenda and I made a run up to Spray Park yesterday. Beautiful day. Bright sun above the bridge crossing into Spray Park. And the new snow has now become much more granular - as compared to the sticky stuff I found Sat on the Muir Snowfield. We headed to the ridge at climber right of Flett headwall and skied those steep rollovers below - excellent! This area has now become my favorite - so many options. Gotta spend a couple nights up there next time th...
Allyson,
Good report, sounds like yall made the best of it.
Was there any buzz down there on other trailheads opening like (Brewer creek )? I know they got a ton of snow.thanks
robie
Oh, and rumor has it that Cass saw markharf running around up there...in tennis shoes??  ???

Apparently the right tool for the job, since they allowed me to (almost) keep up with Mike_C and Jeff on the uptrack.  We turned around at Lake Helen in ferocious winds and blowing ice crystals and skied down to the parking lot.  Mike and Jeff took off while I climbed up for another run, then pitched in on the final few feet of a rescue (1200 f...
Hi Kam--nice report from you and Allyson on Shasta.  You certainly made a great trip out of it.  I look forward to seeing more of your pics.

"5100'vf"
Yes usually, but our mellow start time at noon left only half the day plus the 7 mile hike sure takes long compared to just skinning.

Here are few photos on www.clubphoto.com
It's a cheesy site but they don't downsize your pics, you don't have to be a member to view them and it's free.

Allyson: nice report!  what a great trip.  i enjoyed most hanging out with everyone, and i'm glad we found great skiing.  here's a photo of you, Allyson, on Sunday morning just before the weather moved in.

more photos (i'll post more soon...)

1. Kelvin skiing down to camp...
Monika:  nice report, and good to hear you got out this weekend!  5100 vf.?  isn't that kind of a mellow day for you?  ;).
Did you put your uptrack in the same place as your blue downtrack ?

Nope, I climbed the Whitman glacier side (left side of pic) and traversed over.

Hmm... better bring the snowboard next time, then you can just huck it! :D  Wish I'd been well enough to get out this weekend. >:(

So I take it from the snow you found, that something like the Fuhrer Finger wouldn't have been such a go...
Thanks for the report Jeff,
What a thunderstorm!!!!!!! I have never seen like that.
I came very fast without any warning.
Views of Little Tahoma on the way showed the  crucial connecting ramp through the bottom cliffband on the NE face had not yet  melted out.

Hmm... better bring the snowboard next time, then you can just huck it! :D  Wish I'd been well enough to get out this weekend. >:(

So I take it from the snow you found, that something like the Fuhrer Finger wouldn't have been such a good idea?
Sweet trip. Sounds like everything fell into place. You got some nice turns, ate good food sardines rock, and had some great tunes for the ride home. One of my fav's Mother Love Bone. And always the most important making the wife happy. I can never seem to make it home on time. I'm always an hour or two late.

Aaon
Very interesting ,too bad the damn snow has not consolidated.Did you put your uptrack in the same place as your blue downtrack ?
The final 200 vertical was the most memorable mountain ascent I have ever experienced.

Wow. Nice story Zap, I was gripped just reading it!
Yes, it was truly an amazing trip.  This being my first time on Baker, I'm not sure I can top it! Silas failed to mention that the ski from the summit couldn't have been more perfect.  Open crevasses were minimal and the snow perfect-varied from perfect, smooth corn, to just a wee bit deeper corn at the lower elevations. Picture-perfect indeed! :)

While I want to hit them in the future, I'm glad we made the very last minute decision to ditch the Sisters option, as well as the Hi...
Sounds like a good time, Silas. Weather-wise you made the right choice choosing Baker instead of the Sisters.
Great pictures Robie, thanks for sharing  :D. That's such a great area.
Joe,
My dementia is going to be selective! Leaving out crappy weather, sloppy snow, bad falls, knee surgery and work!
more pictures of this trip taken by myself and Dorothea can be found at
Denis Bogan, our eastern seaboard contingent and one of our most loyal participants of this trip, posted this report of the trip on the Vermont Sking Discussion and Telemark Tips, and asked if I would cross post it for him here.  Denis created such a great read (it was almost like being there) that I jumped at the chance.

Great report Robie! I feel your pain and hallucinations of tracks. Not to suggest that this applies to you but, I can see myself as a deluded old man always thinking there are tracks on that hill or mountain. Hopefully I get to enjoy those moments as you did before the dementia strikes. :D
Joe
Easy it was It was Gary Peniston not Gary Vogt!
Nice Trip, Robman.
I'm glad you made it in there.
How'd you get Gary to go that far from home?
