Awesome. Phil mentioned to me that we should've gone to Magic, but he mentioned a lot of other things as we schwacked up and down in search of another jewel. Unfortunately, not so jewelish. Maybe more mundane, like choss. Ha. Ha.
I bet CJ couloir looked good.

Allyson neglected to mention that she saved me from having to climb the boot pack a second time after someone in my party left a utb crampon at the bottom. Thanks again! :)
Toby I'm glad the snow was still good. On the way down I reassured anyone who'd listen that it would be. We must've just missed you. We took the switchback down whereas it sounds like you climbed straight up.

Nice pics. I've gotta do this tour just for the photos. :D

Mr. Cass: Glad to see that you're out there putting the Avy II class to good use.
Three of us did the Birthday tour on Sunday May 15. We skinned southwest over "Col 1", which opens up into the North Fork Twisp drainage. Topo! labels this Copper Pass. We contoured counterclockwise around what I believe is Copper Mountain, then put on skins to further ascend the valley, popping out above the hairpin turn at what I think has been called Kangaroo Pass. This added perhaps 1 1/2 hours to the tour and some much appreciated solitude. We didn't s...
1980 was the last year the ski resort at pilchuck was in operation.
Hey, met you guys on the flats! I ended up getting a pretty good run in given my late departure. I basically jog-skinned up the mtn., dropped in at the notch among the cornices between little/big pilchuck and skied toward the gorge. Great snow up top, then mush down low. Those trees above the flats are getting thicker and thicker every year!.... Great mom's day run on my way back home from Seattle...What was the last year Pilchuck ski area was in operation?
nice pics, everyone--looks like it was a blast! 8)
Thanks for the TR! Hitting the right timing for this trip is always a little tricky - looks like you just nailed it perfectly - well done!
What a great way to start my annual 'Teanaway tour'. Wow!
One comment: if you consider the Three Brothers for a tour and are not particularly fond of sharing the terrain with snow machines, it might be wise to plan the trip for after snomo access to the area is done for the season.
On the east side of 'Little Navaho Pass' almost every bit of terrain concievable was thoroughly tracked. Tracks to the top of Little Navaho (first time I've seen them th...

Nice. The varied thrush does it for me too.
author=Daniel link=topic=4688.msg19999#msg19999 date=1147454305]Crossing the bergschrund on crest of the Hogsback ridge was pretty easy. It was about a foot wide at that point with a pretty solid looking bridge. I'm not sure how long that will last. But on either side of the ridge crest, it was gaping.

I took the same tour yesterday. Conditions varied widely. I started quite late, heading out from the parking lot at 11 AM. Crust was supportive and a little suncupped heading to Pineapple Pass. The cornice at Bryant-Hemlock is still there. Light sugary snow fell intermittently. Near the top of Pineapple the ice was still hard enough to make even zig-zag skinning a challenge without ski crampons. The west side was likewise icy; I confess I booted down a f...
Nicely done!
I'm glad a few other folks got to enjoy the circumnav. tour......and I'm glad you didn't end up skiing down the Price, although that does sound interesting. Thanks again for the great report and pics.

Hey John. Its Liz Rees- I have been on the fire crew for the past few years, from Roslyn, I think you know who I am. Just got back from WY and really want to get out but haven't done much around here. I am a splitboarder. . .but I always go with skiers. Any way if you ever need anyone to go with I would love to go. Was thinking about doing Ingalls this weekend. Was wondering how was up the road was melted out but I guess if you can make it to Stafford it wouldn't be too bad of a walk t...
John and Larry, sorry we only got to talk on the radio, but it sounds like you found a lot of good skiing! We saw your tent on the way up and that looked like a very nice spot. Any photos of the skiing on the south Three Brothers run? That sounds like a nice one.

Been up there the last two weekends...
I figured you were the culprit responsible for all of those tracks! There certainly are a lot of choices for runs if camping in the Stafford Creek drainage. I've not been to Three Brothers, but that south run sounds nice. Hope you have a good trip. I'd also like to hike in the area in the fall and catch the larches with their fall...

Way to go get it, Martin. Now how about that line on the north side of Colfax?
I did look at it and it is doable, but it certainly is dangerous. And ideally, dying ain't no way to make a living....
Cool. That line looks good.
Now how about that line of Lincoln Sky ;)?

No, we didn't see any accidents. The fall on the Reid Glacier sounded nasty, but I think that was on Saturday or Sunday. We climbed Monday and had the whole mountain to ourselves. We didn't see anyone else out there. I think people might have been scared off by the high winds, but the conditions were great for booting and cramponing. Yes, it was terrible skiing, but for me it was the first time I've been to the top of one of the volcanoes and been able to see anything.

Nice well described TR JD. We are very lucky to live in this area I agree, especially with this years snow pack we can continue to enjoy. I agree the 'no uphill traffic' sign should be ignored now that Alpental is closed for the year. When the resort is open though, that sign is very much needed. I've had several close calls over the years. There's that section where people tuck to keep their speed up to glide up around the parking lot that'...

One of my favorite tours in the area for a corn tour is Three Brothers 7303' and Navaho NE bowl. One can ski the NE bowl of Navaho then skin back to the pass and do Three Brothers 7303', which has about 2800' vert south facing, a nice moderate slope. I used to camp at the base of Three Brothers 7303' and go up to Navaho etc. Those are good memories, now day trips are pretty...
Nice trip. The TRs and my trips have renewed my interest in the area. I think some powder skiing trips next season in the area are a possibility.

Look Zap ,Why don't you turn this into a evening tv show, live cam or whatever. You could even get some sponsors you know kind of a Rick Steves on Skis. There's way worse fare on TV. Jill could get a new jacket and skis! I'm thoughly enjoying your trips and tours.
Did anybody find my bottle of Scotch from last year? IT's good to know that as long as the Silcox is there the Wild hearts will be too. I'm enjoying the pictures keep em coming.
Charles has his "joke boots" I have my joke trailer. I bought it for $10 at a thrift store. the trailer is a plastic bucket on pneumatic tires meant to haul two kids behind a bike. It worked great on the closed white river road. of course I modified it a bit.
Here a couple of pictures. Greg on the way up towards Hell's highway:

You must of been there on the 10th. I was there today the 11th and conditions were still good but not as pretty in the sky. Overcast the whole day. Snow was good though, and allowed for nice and easy turns. The cornices at the top were fairly nice sized. Wouldn't want to be in that path when they go. I got some pics but clouds kinda ruined them.
MAN! If you wouldn't have stopped for that bite to eat, you would have edged out my RT time from last week.
Please, Please stop posting these after work trip reports. It just makes my heart ache with envy.
Hi Korup-
Wow...those sunset shots are amazing!!! Thanks for sharing them. Must be cool to have the ocean in sight while carving turns. I'm landlocked in North Idaho...although we do have a lake (Pend Oreille) that resembles a small inland sea. Still skiing over here in the inland Northwest. We had a pretty big snow year here above 5000 ft. Sounds like you got hit hard over there on the Westside. I'm thinking about taking a trip out next weekend, probably to the Methow. I...

Sounds like a nice trip. Too bad for me, nobody took up my offer ;)
Save me a spot two years from now if you would.
It seemed like I was hearing some reports of mishaps on Hood around the time you all were there. Did you witness any of the accidents? Is the bergschrund gaping?
Surely a vid. from JW is pending?

i would have to consider myself somewhat of a silver star approach "expert" since i have tried both sides of the creek in various combinations and conditions over the years!
there is a path of least resistance which is about the same earlier when snow covered and also later when the snow melts out down low (where there is now is a well established boot track).
mr. knowitall the great me recommends:

I wrote to the MBS NF office asking for info on the Kelley Creek trail and the old trail network in the area, and I thought I'd post the info I received.

I was looking into the trailer system the other day or Charles pack-a-bike system. Thanks for posting that Robie.

Robie, Great use of the bike and trailer. ;) This confirms that as we age, we don't have to give up some of our destinations, just solve the challenge with an elder approach. The descent from Foss is wonderful. Good to see your report.
I was up there 2 weeks before, and we stayed east of the creek and had no problems whatsover...it was very direct. On the way up we ~ hugged the creek a bit, and stayed in the trees - pretty much a straight shot. On the way back we ventured a little further east, higher on the slope which enabled a series of ~ 4 survival traverses through the trees followed by ~ 200vf fun direct descents in open areas. While I haven't tried the west side, I can't imagine it being any easier, and loo...
Some additional, Mt Hood, Silcox, and skiing photos :D.
Thanks for twisting my arm, man! No time to go through the pictures now, I'll link to some when I get back from New Orleans . . .
It was great meeting you too Gerry. Look forward to seeing you guys out there again. Let me know when you're heading out again and we'd love to join you guys.
