Already Tired? I don't AT but that's what doing squats down a mountain would seem to feel like! Gotta respect it. GREAT day on Silver Star - it was fun meeting & doing some skiing w/Jim & gang on Saturday.
I toured to the back bowls and entered the 'white room'. I waited for an hour for the fog to lift but it never cleared. Retraced the ascent route and skied the slush back to Paradise.
If you had Cream on your mp3 Zap, just ski through the black curtains to the station (aka sunshine). Or maybe you need some Jack Bruce performance enhancer. ;)

Got the x's before your edit Jim. Now all is fine. Thanks.
Cool little ski! We did it Sunday and parking for this seemed easier than anything before Silver Star Creek, and it was perfect for a little leg-stretch before the drive home.
Yup, Already - that's me!
Lahar - funny how there's this tendency for folks to poke at the people who are on slightly different gear (skiers to boarders, AT:Tele:AT...). Let's hook up sometime and I'll bring my tele gear and you can let me know if I can tele! :) As my friend Dave is fond of saying, It's all good!

AT = Aging Telemarker
Certainly feels like it Tim!
I'll probably be borrowing my wife's AT rig for the rando rallies next year... Damn you Dynafit! You and your "lightness"!
Free the heel, free the mind. Fix the heel, fix the problem. If it were easy, etc. etc...

AT - after tele. ::)
(Shouldn't this all be on that other board?)

Randonee- French for can't, or never could, tele.
That's my husband and our friend just in front of you in this picture
We continued to the summit ridge. The top 1500' vertical feet were definitely lacking in the visibility area and we were forced to ski near the climbers trail as the ascending masses were our only visual reference points :)
I concur with you about the trail below tree line being some of the most fun. Yep,yep, yep.

reposted the photos and edited the links - hopefully they work for folks now...
ema - fun to sort of almost ski with you guys, your crew had good energy! And if it's worth anything, I was a dedicated telemarking fiend but really haven't been missing it much except on rolly-polly teeny uphill-on-the-downhill bits. I love AT especially for the uphill!!

Hi, Mack. They are my little SUVs for wild Spring snow. That's the idea, but I'm still getting used to them. Their short (171 cm) size is nice for slow quick turns, while they are burly enough for difficult snow. Only complain so far is their big flaring outside tails, specially comparing to Headrush's short tails. Maybe I should have picked Reverend, but not that graphics... Did you know the Rapid has the Japanese bullet-train on them?
Wahoo! Can't wait to see pics -- we're warming up the corn for you...
Hey guys!
Thanks for posting the trip report -- I've been wondering how you were doing up there! Too bad about the weather but at least you've got in a few good tours, and skiing until 7pm has got to make up for at least one bad-weather day. ;) Can't wait to see pictures!!
How's life in the camper?

Its amazing how quickly one can become disoriented in bad weather. Nice job having the knowledge/emergency gear to survive the night and the presence of mind to get yourself out. Live and learn, huh?
jim, ay that was me; i do see AT gear in my future...
prestonf, your dog was very civil to me!

Zap, good choices !
Mej & LArry Trotter, on reflection this year's closure forced a lot of us to go explore other places. that is the upside of it. I'm in awe of the posters here and those who have came before us who have ventured out in to new terrain.

Great Job... someone had to do it. Bronka! She must be about 80 years old by now.

Sorry if our dog barked at you, she was just a little over excited ;D. We'll have to work on that.
I can't see your pictures :'(.
I was the guy with the camera who she ran up to and barked at on the headwall. I think she may have thought I was you and then when she saw I wasn't, she was startled. No worries from me, but I have dog...
I toured to the back bowls and entered the 'white room'. I waited for an hour for the fog to lift but it never cleared. Retraced the ascent route and skied the slush back to Paradise. As I neared the van, the drizzle began. With the snowpack still unconsolidated, I'm heading south to Hogback and then to Mt. Hood.
Someone riding a new pair of Rapid Transits, Kenji? :) How do they ride?
After skinning up to a camp just below the glacier on Saturday we went for a short ski on the lower part of the glacier. Skied skier's left but it already had a bit of frozen crust. Sunday morning was promising and we skinned up to the col under partly sunny skies, alas once in the col the clouds moved in. We made the summit to see exciting variations of Grey on White in all directions. Mark Rothko would love the views!
Sunday seemed to be a bit busier than Saturday. At one point...

Larry: ... The slope off of Hinman IS nice. It just takes a few days to acquire. See the Snoq Haute Route post of late March...GregLange
Thanks Greg,
Great pics of the trip on Martin's site. I suppose it does not hurt me to dream! :)
It was fun watching you guys gain on us through the day - it made us feel just slightly geriatric to realize that you would inexorably catch and pass us (which you indeed did!). Were you the telemarker who commented that she was mostly doing parallel turns (where I was the last few seasons before finally giving in and switching to AT gear)?
I was wondering when the first Muir TR would show up. I'm surprised it took this long.
Nice pics! Did you leave from the Whitewater TH? Having gotten lost up there this weekend, I was wondering where you got the GPS waypoints?
haha, logged in to write a TR, and it was already written for me :) jim, i was in the party of four, what a small world...
Stew, you finally managed to drag your dad off the couch and out for a ski tour. Don't forget the pics.

Quite a trip indeed! Watch out for that cornice on summit SW facing! The cracks start back about 15 feet from the edge yikes! more pics http://climbingjay.smugmug.com/gallery/2811910 8)
Yaaahhh...Earl peak was most excellent today. Wolfs, Cochise, a tay lurker and I did a semi-circumnavigation of Earl peak, which finally led to the top. Mainly for the nice touring aspects. We found good turns on each aspect. More snow on the east and oddly southern aspects. We saw someone on the summit whilst we were in the south bowl...but that was around 1pm so perhaps someone else other than the famous c-freak.

Nice job Stewart. Good TR and even better tour, young mountain man. :) I heard you had a good trip to AK as well, and got some first trax @ Alyeska.
Would you guys have any interest in Leavenworth over Memorial Day weekend?

Nice trip!! Living the dream ;D Where are the rest of the pics?
I shoulda joined you two for the ginger snaps alone. Should, coulda, woulda.
Thanks for the report, Jim. I head east soon for a wedding and a sibling visit. Hopefully ski in early June when I get back.

Wolfs and I took advantage of the high gas prices and drove to Shasta.
Great opening! ;D
Shasta is on my mind too. But the drive is a long long one from up here Vancouver, BC. I guess I too will have to take advantage of the high prices...
similar to the snowpack you'd more typically see in the first week of June.-
hoping to get down there 1st w/e in june, will probably feel like, and I'm expecting late june conditions. wish i could go one of these weekends... especially since its probably been snowing off/on all week there. :-[

telemack and other SO skiiers-
here's a pic SE ridge/summit of McLoughlin (hope this shows up- this is my 1st post)
brown looked OK across the way
had a week of too warm weather last week, corn was turning deep/sloppy early on (late am) and lower down didn't freeze.
this week though its been raining/snowing on/off all week, which should augment that base. the snowline on the S side of Mc seemed to be around 5500-6000. Crappy bushwacking last...

We are going up Sat. night and will be parking at Marble Mountain.
This sounds a lot like my weekend plans. See you out there! ;D
Sounds similar to my experience. I snowboard so I snowshoed/hiked up in about 6 hours, hung out for about an hour, then 2 hours down.
Anyone that is thinking about a Shasta trip this year might consider that the snowpack there now is probably similar to the snowpack you'd more typically see in the first week of June. Per the last rec report, the roads to Northgate and Clear Creek are within 2 miles of being open, which is usually the signal that the skiing's at its prime (the moment the trailheads are 'officiallly' open on those other routes it can sometimes be just slightly on the downside of the skiabilit...
Nice TR and photos. Hidden Valley provides an excellent location for getting away from the crowds along the standard route plus the skiing is wonderful.
Great report. Good to see more skiing in my backyard.
??? My mistake, sorry ThinkSnow! Still, Kangaroo Temple's over the other side of that 6671 pass, ain't it?
Bah! Never mind! Nice TR!

We started earlier at 6am . A lot depends on your speed and how much effect the sun will have on the snow. We took about 9 -9.5hrs round trip
