Rock Mtn still has a lot of snow for great skiing. Only catch is to hike the summer trail for 2 hours to get the snow line (~4500' for now). The West slope offered fine skiing for 1900' except the last 100'. Some new and corn on firm, but not hard base at a consistent 35 angle. Nick was eager to drop into the North couloir off the summit, which seemed in fine shape except a few rocks to avoid. Maybe the next time, since we had enough time for just one extra run, I picked the West slope. A lot possibilities.
Approaching Rock from the North won't be a day tour for a while, since Smith Brook is still blocked with snow at the highway.
A few pics below: ski shot over the North couloir and the hint of the West slope.

Someone riding a new pair of Rapid Transits, Kenji? :) How do they ride?
Hi, Mack. They are my little SUVs for wild Spring snow. That's the idea, but I'm still getting used to them. Their short (171 cm) size is nice for slow quick turns, while they are burly enough for difficult snow. Only complain so far is their big flaring outside tails, specially comparing to Headrush's short tails. Maybe I should have picked Reverend, but not that graphics... Did you know the Rapid has the Japanese bullet-train on them?

Japanese Bullet-trains? Wow, Kenji, we need to get out sometime so I can see those rockets ;D Thanks for the report on Rock Mtn. Will have to get there some day. It looks great! I'm skiing the Karhu Jak BC this spring in a 165m. Not an mini-SUV, but lots of fun.

Hi Kenji,
I often wondered if the north side was still worth skiing by the time the Rainy Pass road opens. Sounds like from your post that it is. Do you access it from the east (Lk. Wenatchee) or west? Does the west slope still hold skiable snow then? If so, what a combination for a day trip.
I'm wondering if Nick went to Hawkins this weekend!
Thanks,
John
I've never skied in from the north. I doubt the upper snow pack would remain solid until Rainy pass is snow free, since the pass is at 4600'. I'm sure skiable snow would still be there, but might be a bit sketchy by then. Approaching from Lk Wenatchee might work better as far as timing goes. let us know if you try.
