We would have made the summit if you hadn't brought that damned bottle of wine.  Eighty degrees at Paradise definately softened things up.  The pictures were all blurry but here's a couple anyway.

Where's is that sunscreen?

Sounded like a great trip, Scottie.

I just forwarded a link to your boss... hope it doesn't have any effect on your employment status but in case it does, I have some yard work that needs doing; could keep you busy for a while, wine included as a job perk  ;)
Howdy.  We met last summer at Snowdome.  At any rate, a couple of us were up at Diamond on the 12th.  We by no means had an alpine start and were in thick pea soup above treeline.  We made it to about 7700, going in via Corrigan.  The snow clearly had not frozen the night before, but the slushy turns were still fun.  FYI, there is going to be a good crew of folks, mostly pinheads, at Corrigan Lake Memorial Day weekend.  Swing by.
Thanks for the post John...I got out and took your approach on the 14th. The NE face was superb corn due to a little colder night. I couldn't help myself, so took several runs before the west exit and a kayak run down the Teanaway with a group from the west side....I may have been paddling in some of the molecules I touched earlier. Looks like there'll be good skiing and boating for at least a few more weeks!

Is the road to Pilchuck TH free of snow yet?

Essentially, yes. At the most there's a couple hundred yards to walk to the TH then a little bit of trail before the snow becomes continuous.

Uh.. Duuudee...   Helloouu, it was Tarantula Azul Blue Margaritas over fresh powdered snooowww.  Got a little thing going with the short term memory loss, eh  ;)

Serily, what a fun day being out on a day pass from the senior center and being able to sneak out without that damn walker and the helm...
sounds like fun, sorry I missed it :(
Thanks for the awesome TR JD, great pics!  Always looking forward to seeing your posts.  Is the road to Pilchuck TH free of snow yet?
Check out this shot of the day in the Tacoma News Tribune http://blogs.thenewstribune.com/photo/  posted 5/14/07 titled "Mothers Climb"
JD: your photos are awesome. Holy cow. You should make a book or something. What a cool web site, thanks for letting us have a look.

Nice to meet you at the trailhead, Monika.

Real nice to meet you too Sarah.
When you climbed Sahale did you go up via Boston basin and then the Boston Sahale col or over Cascade pass up the arm?
Great photo. Hope I'm that lucky when I eventually make it up there!

I use Smugmug for my photo hosting site and it also allows you to create a Google Earth KML file of your photographs. It's a bit of work but it's cool once you have it set up. I've got a KML file of my photos linked off of my photo site.
Pas l'haute route? c'est dommage!

Who's that with the mohawk hanging on to the chain in the middle picture?
Zap - for pictures of what an old pair of your climbing skins are doing, see the TR on cc.com:

Well, that looks more than gorgeous enough to make up for the "marginal" weather!
Cool. I had someone ask me to do this last week and I didn't. Now I regret it  ???. Sorry tony. I hope that you went  ;D.
Yeah I wouldn't want to be approaching Blue Lake col when that cornice drops, ka-boom!

Trippy effect on the middle photo. I like the last one of the buildings a lot.

PBR = Pabst Blue Ribbon?? According the Wikipedia, the "hipster" population in towns like Seattle and Portland have helped fuel a revival of the cheap-but-ok beer from my high school daze.

I didn't have a compass with me or anything, but I would say it was more northeast. We started from near the north, and slightly lower summit.

Burgdorfer sez it's "Sally Portman's Birthday Tour", my guess is Don named it for her so she'd let him out for turns on her magic day.... ::)

This intrigued me so I did some quick research.  In an older edition of Burgdorfer's book he refers to "Ski Touring Methow Style" by Sally Portman.  In that book she claims th...
Marcus, I think we saw your crew heading down. I was about 15-30 minutes form the summit. We started later and our group was slower.

Your group all in dresses skiing down put a big smile on my face. I wish I had the camera out.

What a great day up there!

I added pics to the TR a few minutes ago.
Was the bowl you went up to directly on the east side?

It's Don Portman's birthday that's responsible for the name.

I'm afraid I gave the wrong the wrong impression.
Of course I'm gonna bring along my planks but I lack touring bindings and my friend doesn't have a splitboard so we are left to bootpack.

Thanks for the beta
You guys talking about the bunnyhop?  ;)
Ha!  What can I say?  Speed + still-frozen-corn/demo-skis = Strawberry Butt.

Nice pics Roger!  A perfect day...

Instead of calling you Fat Ass, I will have to call you Strawberry Butt. I think Playgirl magazine may give you a call cause they will want that last pick as a cover shot. Cheers

We had a blast too. Here's my link to some more photos on CC.com.

St Helens Mothers Day 2007
Nice shots folks... sounds like a winner of a tour.  Nice to meet you at the trailhead, Monika.
Nice pics Michael and thanks for the update on your trip.  Glad you got a few good days after the change in weather.  Had heard a bit from Magali on how it was going there with Fabien.  Hope to see you while you're back in Seattle!

The report I was waiting for! Thanks Stella Conditions!
This reminds me of our attempt two year ago sans the perfect corn. We had crust and sastrugi all the way to the treeline :(

" I just want to double check that we're not going to be slogging through ankle deep corn."

Well, you jus done gotcher vegertables mixed up, that's all it is.  Once its ankle deep, its mashed taters, that's what it is.  Ya sure ya betcha.

Seriously, tho, Lowell is right.  The boot track will treat you right, it will be nice and solid most of the way.  But you could still do a little plunge stepping, so bring gaiters or wear boots...
Man Marcus, skiing in shorts is almost as good as glissading in shorts...but then what kind of fool would ever willingly glissade in shorts (she said rather sheepishly)? :)

I'm SO sad to have missed out yesterday!  Looks like another booming success on St. Helens. Well done all!
Damn you Oyvind!

How do you do it?
I might get out for my 1st ski tour this winter on the 26th!!!!
Sweet!  ;D  ;D  Great tour -- I see lots of smiles.
E,

sorry I didnt respond to your call. busy weekend with friends in town. looks like i missed out on a nice tour with some nice views. I am hoping to get out there soon and see what all the hoopla is all about.
I was droppin those this summer on my mountain board.  No biggie.
Hi Jeff,
We were the ones who met you at the top and walked out to the south ridge.  Thanks for checking to see if it was ours and also for the beta of not skiing SE directly off the summit into the rollover with those rocks below.  From below it didn't look like it had a wide enough passage.  We like those small bowls beyond to the SE and usually one would not have to walk the skis out to them.  Kind of a strange melt out this year.
Figured someone in your gro...
Hey Dicey, it was nice to have met you!   You gals definately made the right choice.  With no rope it would have been entirely possible (with the runout zone below) but I dont' think I'd have the cohones enough to do it   :-[  It was a beautiful day! 8)
Looks great, guys, sorry I couldn't attend!

I love the symmetry of the tracks in the top pic.
We took the Beverly Creek approach to iron peak yesterday.  We hiked for about 1.5 miles before putting on skis at around 4800 feet where we crossed the creek.  No problems getting across the creek at that point.  Snow was best on the NE aspect of Iron Peak for our group around 1:00pm.  Views, as always were spectacular.
One person in our group found a roll of exposed 35mm film on the summit--send a pm if its yours...

When does Muir usually become more a bootpack and less of a skinning tour? A friend and I want to bootpack it on memorial day, but I just want to double check that we're not going to be slogging through ankle deep corn.

If you don't want to bring skis, you'll probably be fine, since lots of people hike and there should be a boot track in place. The...
Well Telemack I am very impresssed with your TR in verse. I shall now refer to you as " The Bard of Bangor". :D
Great trip and a lot of fun with you and Sidnie and there is nothing better than celebrating someone's birthday than on the birthday tour in such good weather.
Excellent effort on the last skin without ski crampons, I certainly was glad I had mine.

Sidnie, you skied terrific on those new Tacora's and made it look so easy!

SPECIAL! A photo of a runaway sled on Heliotrope Ridge taken by my friend Ron.
We saw the sledders on top of Heliotrope Ridge but had no idea this happened.  ;D  >:(
Hi Jeff,

Sunday was sure a beautiful day on Mt Hood.  Better than I expected. Steph mentioned meeting you on the Palmer snowfield. I would have enjoyed meeting you as well, but I was skiing the chairlifts with our son.

Our party from Wenatchee, Everett and Seattle stayed at the Silcox Hut Saturday night. It was lots of fun as usual. My 10-year-old son skied from Timberline to Silcox under his own power on Saturday. It was his second time on touring gear, the first being the...
Nicely timed and executed Paul. I was there yesterday, Sunday,  and there were 3 to 5 inches of fresh poorly bonded to the unfrozen mush. Had thought of your loop or Benzarino but  poor viz and sloughs all around. Another group of 3 left early but  patience was not rewarded for the predicted clearing as snow showers persisted. It will take quite awhile for things to consolidate now. Lake Ann still pretty solid for crossing though.
Enjoyed the Saturday views and sunshine with Telemack and m...
