Beautiful.
Both are correct.
There you go Andy! Good beta on the N. chute; I admired it 1-1/2 months ago. I'll PM you next time I do Ellie.
Beautiful.

No SnoPark permit required now.
Our group started up at about 7:45 AM. and there were lots ahead of us and lots behind.

Nice work -- that's a great loop. Minor correction on your descent though... looks like the couloir you skied was down Vasiliki Ridge, if I'm not mistaken. (Heh -- see below, I'm mistaken!) Kangaroo Temple is off to the left, over the next pass. Skied that couloir with some friends last spring and man, that's a beautiful, consistent line.
Do you need a snopark pass to park there? We are going up Sat. night and will be parking at Marble Mountain. I have a trailhead pass- but not a snopark pass.
What time did most folks start out in the morning the day you were there?

Road 81 is presently gated, so the start is even lower than Marblemountain snowpark.
XCJer,
No that wasn't me, I must have just missed you. I spent most of my time wandering aimlessly out towards Sand Peak, before I realized I wasn't going to have time to ride it and get back to the valley to head to the coast with my wife ;)
The snow was pretty good. They'll get a little today and tomorrow, but it'll go fast.

Did you see anyone on the top of Hoodoo? We spoke to a guy from Sisters up there. Was that you?
I skiied down that north run too. Not too shabby up high but a bit wet and sloppy down low. Wish I would've gotten up earlier before the snow deteriorated. In regards to describing the snow conditions in the TR, couldn't have said it better myself.

no, there wasn't continuous snow until a few miles up the road...
Nice work and glad you survived your ride. This:
Is hilarious! ;D
Lessons learned, we were never so happy to ski out onto a dubiously frozen lake in the springtime.
Is hilarious! ;D
What a fantastic tour and it's only a few days into your trip! :)
Sorry I missed your phone call the other night.
I've still got my fingers crossed for good weather. Keep up the trip reports and pictures please! ;D

I have always gone up the east face(the alternate ski route down in Martin's book) with no problems. It gives me a good feel for the conditions on the way up before traversing across for the last bit of the climb. No large cornice to deal with, but, the runout could be rough if you went for a long ride. Nice trip! One of my favs up in that area.Jay
Yaah Pete and Becky!!!
Way to go get some AK action. Throw up some pics when you get the chance.

Wow, great to read an Alaskan report! Much, much more around Turnagain, check with the locals about that and the Girdwood Valley (Chugachs) or accessing the slopes above Anchorage (accessing from upper Huffman Rd - Chugach's again). Another easily accessible area is the Independence Pass area, out of Palmer (on the way to Valdez, just 45 miles from Anchorage on the highway towards Glenallen)- to say nothing of the greater Valdez area (unlimited slope and glacier skiing), on each side of T...
Thanks for the beta. Were you able to start skinning as soon as the road became impassable?
I'm weighing a trip down there this weekend. The weather service has now changed its tune and is predicting a ridge of high pressure to edge in on Saturday/Sunday, so perhaps things might work.
If anyone else is considering a trip and interested in carpooling down from Seattle, send me a message. Gas is powerful expensive theseadays and I figure we might...

Wooooooo!! Excellent -- anytime y'all need up-to-the-minute weather, give us a buzz.
Yeah I skied Granite a few weeks ago and the ski off the summit was really good with well consolidated snow, although really prone to point release avalanche - no wonder Granite has that bald top and deep runneled gullies - I've seen the avalanche debris early in the spring...ouch.
If you don't mind kicking back on a ferry boat, I find Ellinor to be a great day trip from Seattle - nice drive along the Hood Canal to Hoodsport and short approach (especially once the upper trai...

Glad you were able to get yours. We didn't feel like being patient enough since we wanted to hit some runs on the lifts. Had Slot not had frozen tracks, it would have been side-slip and jump turnable to around the bend, but as was the frozen grooves would have made it hard to stay upright. It would be great to hit it on a powder day!
Great call. A week ago on Granite, the skiable snow line was ~at or slightly below the top of the big avy gully on the South side. I'm not familiar with Ellinor, but I'd guess you found a more pleasant route , at least for the non-skiing part of the route, over that way.
Bummer! A couple friends and I considered doing Adams this weekend, but were thwarted in part due to an unexpected injury. Sitting at home nursing my knee, I watched the weather evolve, culminating in this from Camp Muir: At ~7 am, winds averaged 92 mph, with gusts to 125 around 8 am. Since the wind was straight out of the southwest, you could've just skied up the South Spur without skins.... The preceding NWS forecast for Rainier consistently predicted high winds for Sunday, but nothing qu...
Greg and I saw you guys on the way up and wondered if you actually dropped into the slot. Four of us tracked up the slot pretty well on saturday, so I bet the turns would have been pretty heinous. We waited about an hour longer about 200 yards from you keeping our eyes down the crooked whenever there was a clearing. The snow was pretty firm but we decided to drop in straight off the summit through some pock marked snow. It was still pretty hard snow to about 5000 feet ov...
All good info! Thanks! now where's my bike trailer
Yep all open at Marble mount.no snow there so snomobilers are not there. Not sure about Climbers bivoauc road. It might pay to ask at Jacks. That route saves about a 1000' ft of climb.
The warming hut has a wood stove and was open. Many a year we went inside and started a fire and slept on top the picnic tables. Bring your own wood.

Awesome- looking forward to this Saturday. ;D Was the snowpark parking lot open for parking & car camping?
The last time I was down there (just prior to the activity), it was open but I also remember a year where the road was
gated just before the entrance to the snowpark.
Nice TR and photos. I'll look forward to your reports from the Rockies.

Bummer Eli, Jerry and I were thinking about you guys. We thought you would have had much better weather than us. We were talking about Hidden Lakes Peak Friday. Jay
We saw your tracks yesterday on earl. Instead of deep slush we found firm conditions on the northeast bowl in the morning and sweet corn on all other angles in the afternoon. No problems with speed at all!! The snow will be gone on the bean creek side soon. You should be able to drive to the trailhead in two weekends. Passable with big tires and 4wd
That col saw alot of traffic on Saturday, and there were still parties making it up the track during those photos.
No less than 10 million people have commented on how sunburned my face is today.

There be a mighty amount of turns in them thar hilz. Awesome ;D
I went up a bit W of Meany Crest, directly towards the glacier and to the R of a big gully system. The entire basin is pretty well covered right now.
I was able to ski in and out from the TH without having to take off my skis for anything other than the stream crossings (biggest hazard of the day). Snow at the road was still about 2-4ft deep.
If it corns up it will be awesome.;)

The organizators sure blew the promotional part, the least they could do was to post the results on their website. Anyhow a friend of mine was emailed the Spearhead Passage results from Delena Angrignon [This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. ]. I imagine she can supply you with results of the other two races as well.
I am attaching a screenshot of the PDF as a picture (it is easier to read than the unformatted text below).

Sound like an interesting day! -Will-
Great to meet the three of you on Eldorado a little over a week ago. Casey and I were happy to have others to share the beautiful day with.
Nice job on Shuksan! -Will-

Telemack--I think Oregon has slightly less snow at lower elevations this year over last, but plenty deep above 5500'. I did McLaughlin last year in early June and there was snow at the trailhead, but road was just open. I don't know, but would bet the road will open in May this year. There is lots of snow on the North side long into summer.
Thanks for the beta, Jim. Did you head up the standard approach to gain Meany Crest? any sense of the snow coverage? Thxs.
Great skiing on Silver Star, huh? I knew I was gonna hear that from someone...
I heard that the Park isn't planning on opening the White River Road til 5/25, but its totally clear and passable as far as I rode it. Access seems pretty good right now with snow right to the road and the streams still pretty filled in so that's too bad. The folks in Greenwater were dying to have a little better access to that side of the mountain. In fact, they said the road was clear up to Sunr...

Useful replies, thank ewe. We are going to Ashland for some Shakespeare the last week of June and I thought I'd duck off for some volcano corn.

Thanks for the early Frying Pan report, it's good to know what's happening up there.
Silver Star turned out to be a perfect choice on Saturday, partly blue skies, enough sun to burn our faces to a crispy husk, and spring powder turns down to 6k or so and slushy below- however there was quite a bit of traffic. I don't think it will be totally tracked out for you next weekend.

Mmmm, Kailas! How do you like em? Are you skiing AT or Tele?
I tele, well...most of the time :-[. I seem to be throwing in more downhill turns of late.
I love the Kailas. A very fun ski that does surprisingly well on ice, corn, powder and everything between. A great all around ski in my opinion.

Looks nice. Is it too early to ask how much snow will be left on the southern volcanoes, such as McLaughlin, in June?
Brenda and I usually make an annual pilgrimage to Roseburg to visit my parents on 4th of July weekend. We always find plenty of snow up around Mt Thielsen, even in a low snow year. This year should be no different. The Sister's hold snow even...

The couloir looks ripe for some yo-yoing! :D
Maybe a mile plus or minus depends how much you want to walk your skis on dirt. There are about 3 trees down partially blocking the trail. defintely plan on carrying your skis to the upper XC crossing. seems like we always get greedy and start skinning too soon then lose time repacking. Skiing back down the trail is truely is one of the best parts of the trip for me. This time I shot video of Jenn boarding out in front me as I skied down.
Hey Don! I chatted with you briefly about your dog on the way up. Glad it all worked out. Superb day! The views into the crater, and of Rainier, Adams and Hood were all stunning.
Gorp, it is about a mile and a half or so until you hit skinnable snow, with a break or two after that.

Boot, Nice Job getting in there. We were 3 miles to the east of you on Red Top 6400' between D'Peak and Crescent lake to the East. You had the goods! great shot of the big bowl/ridge with with W'Pass Hill in the background.
Nice trip Jeff. It's been a few years since I've skied the Face. It is a wonderful line with spring corn.
